- jboitnott, on 07/10/2009, -0/+37I think Hollywood executives had better worry about actually creating either QUALITY movies - or movies that people WANT to see. Then they might not have to worry nearly as much.
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -8/+27Twitter is *****.
- sporkman, on 07/10/2009, -1/+11They said the EXACT same thing about texting.
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -1/+9yes, but so are people so its a match made in... earth
- FredFredrickson, on 07/10/2009, -0/+8You've never heard of a rumor spreading about someone / something? Or an insult?
- FredFredrickson, on 07/10/2009, -2/+9You forgot the third (and most plausible) option: no effect whatsoever.
People have always talked about movies and told their friends about them. Twitter doesn't change this at all. - absolutelytrue, on 07/10/2009, -1/+7Excellent point.
- liquisoft, on 07/11/2009, -0/+6Solution: Stop creating ***** films.
- rocknog, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5Why did Transformers pull 40M? Because some people liked it. I have a friend who went on and on about how it was the greatest movie ever and how I absolutely must go out and see it. Of course, he dragged me down to the theater to see Daredevil, too, so I no longer trust his taste in movies.
- Tarnum, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4But... it's cheaper to hype a crappy movie!
- TechEvil, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3It's about the experience, its fun to go out to the movies, because even if you have that awesome home theater system, its always there. Get out of the house once in a while. Although you DO bring up several decent points about why people hate going to the movies.
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3no kidding... theyre worried about their power to manipulate people (advertising) when all the need to worry about is quality of their product (as it used to be)
- totallyRo, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3FTA: "It's a new phenomenon and we're really seeing it this summer,” said Dick Cook, the chairman of Walt Disney Studios. “Clearly there's a Twitter effect.
/facepalm - Durrok, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2Actually I went and saw it even knowing it was going to be crap. Why? I had $15, some time to burn, and I saw it in iMax. Sure it sucked, but it was pretty amazing to watch. Am I going to even bother downloading it? No, but imo it was worth seeing it in iMax.
Also pot helps. - DuncanBirch, on 07/10/2009, -2/+4Post Office Box.
- jmuh, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2Seriously. The weather and what movie you just saw are probably the most common topics of conversation among pretty much any two individuals within speaking distance.
- Firespray1138, on 07/10/2009, -5/+7***** Twitter.
- MikeOxbigg, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2Word-of-mouth isn't harmful. It's neutral communication on it's own; the channels of Facebook, Twitter and even Digg are just bringing it to a new scale. It can be harmful when movies suck, but 'The Hangover' was a massive, shattering blockbuster and that was in great part due to the overwhelming positivity of its generated word-of-mouth.
Maybe it will push studios to put out a higher quality product- unlike that 8th-month abortion Will Ferrell spawned last month. Word-of-mouth did a righteous kill with that one. - akula89, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1there's nothing about "word of mouth" that makes it lean positive or negative so yes, it can be harmful or helpful.
- hopeforhealing, on 07/26/2009, -0/+1I like going to the movies and holding hands with Hubby. It can be a fun getaway. To me, marketing is starting to misrepresent more movies. Tweets from friends can help me avoid movies that I might not enjoy. I'm glad to get their opinions. The more movie tweets I get the better. Here's hoping that Twitter can force Hollywood to make decent movies and give accurate marketing to them!
- teamgwho, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1Yeah... so why did Transformer still pull 40M last weekend?
I think this is a good thing. Good movie do even better, and ***** movies get their asses kicked to the curb. Hopefully the studios wont worry about "diverting their attention" when they make a sucky movie, but will make better movies instead.
//eyeroll... I know I know.... I can dream... - Tanktunker, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1It could be twitter.
It could be that the movies suck.
WE MAY NEVER KNOW. - WunderTroll, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1Thumbnail is misleading when viewed from main page =(
- macinit1138, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1Good!
- 07dcolem, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1"For those who do not yet know, Twitter is a website that can also be accessed
through handheld devices on which users send out short, pithy messages - "tweets"- to friends who sign up to follow them. Some Twitterers have thousands of "followers."
/s - diemunkiesdie, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Because all the buzz about a movie is gone by then. If you show up all excited about a movie that everyone else saw months ago, people will just think you are an idiot.
- damack, on 07/10/2009, -1/+2Well its popular and thats all that matters really.
The problem with twitter is most people on it are stupid so a lot of crap often gets spread and like minded morons spread it even further.
There are going to be a lot of issues with crappy movies like Fast and the Furious being endlessly promoted on Twitter by morons and a very small ignored minority talking about movies that are actually good. - TechEvil, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1Thumbnail is a dude >_>
- BigRed24, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1good ol' P.O. box
- Encephalon, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Unfortunately, the "movies that people WANT to see" are lobotomized explosion orgies with scantily-clad pseudo sex symbols featuring robots with wrecking ball testicles.
- tweedius, on 07/10/2009, -2/+2There is a solution to this. Make good movies.
- sockpuppets, on 07/10/2009, -1/+1Based on the amount of cash transformers generated and how awful it is I think you're mistaken.
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -2/+2oh noes! the internets are spreading truth again! kill it with fire!
- Astark, on 07/10/2009, -5/+3Why the eff do people even go to movies anymore? Take away the finger-banging teens and families trying to escape the heat, or maybe the opening of a splashy flick that calls for a huge screen, and I just don't get the appeal. Why would a guy with money to spend, who probably has a nice home theater setup in his living room, want to be bothered with inconsiderate people, ridiculous prices and lines just to see a movie that'll be on DVD or Blue Ray a couple of months later?
- Gee1004, on 07/10/2009, -5/+3Nothing is wrong with twitter, don't like another form of communication, don't use it. Sometimes I get tired of Digg. Same BS, a Mac story and more who cares comments.
No one is forced to use twitter and no one is forced to read an Apple or Microsoft story - absolutelytrue, on 07/10/2009, -11/+5Wow, that's interesting. I never thought word of mouth could be harmful, but I guess in this instance it can be.
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -16/+6I have a boner.

What is Digg?
