- herrshuster, on 03/21/2009, -8/+127This is the new HDR - mark my words.
- JoeyDaioh, on 03/21/2009, -5/+120Except this is a million times cooler than HDR.
- Dan137exe, on 03/20/2009, -4/+101The rescue helicopter part was pretty funny. I imagine a conversation between a rescuer and the pilot would go like this:
"Hurry! He could drown!"
"Yeah, but let's zig-zag our way over to him." - smindsrt, on 03/20/2009, -4/+82I just knew that dude was going to fall in. Great video!!!
- aTroll, on 03/21/2009, -1/+55using it on my penis would be redundant...
*please be a comment graveyard* - inactive, on 03/21/2009, -1/+50Just wait for Tilt Shift Time Lapse HDR Videos.
- herrshuster, on 03/21/2009, -0/+48HDR is cool when done right - but it's overdone
- Falldog, on 03/21/2009, -4/+36Pretty nifty, whole collection, http://vimeo.com/channels/keithloutitssydney
You need to learn how to submit in the video section though, champ. - outToLunch, on 03/21/2009, -1/+23Before the helicopter showed up I was a bit worried (read: internet laughing at misfortune) at the guy that got washed off the rocks haha.
- K4Lic0, on 03/21/2009, -2/+23Can anyone with more experience with photo lenses explain why it makes stuff look miniature? Thanks!

The goal of HDR is actually to eliminate high-contrast areas to simulate the dynamic range of the human eye. While it's absolutely possible to take HDR tilt shift photographs, it wouldn't look "right".
- inactive, on 03/21/2009, -2/+14Because he uses a tilt-shift lens
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilt-shift_photograph ... - nitesoIja, on 03/21/2009, -1/+12i can see someone using it for a music video
- RobbieF, on 03/21/2009, -3/+14It really does look like everything is miniature. Weird how our brains play tricks on us.
- MarshalBanana, on 03/21/2009, -2/+12Why do you always ruin EVERYTHING?
- RedRaiderG, on 03/20/2009, -3/+12Very cool.
- Volatile, on 03/21/2009, -1/+10Thing is, tilt-shift photography requires crazy-expensive lenses/equipment, unless you're cheating in photoshop.
- milkmit, on 03/21/2009, -3/+12uhhh, T/S lenses have been around forever, and the technique is already tired enough (and has been for a long time) amongst any remotely serious circle of photographers.
if anything, HDR was the new T/S thanks to the ease of accomplishing it offered by digicams. - inactive, on 03/21/2009, -0/+8Still, this feels like it would be a great ad for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter service; guy deserves to get this on TV.
- nonymous666, on 03/21/2009, -2/+10The point of the zig zagging was that the copter was searching for him.
- Angostura, on 03/21/2009, -1/+9Because you have been subjected to lots of macro shots in the past with very shallow depth of field. I suspect that if you showed this to someone who had never seen a macro shot, they wouldn't necessarily think everything looked tiny.
Hmmm.. I may see what my three year old thinks. - Rikushix, on 03/21/2009, -0/+8This isn't a zero punctuation or xkcd submission...your chances were pretty damn low, haha.
- diggimator, on 03/21/2009, -3/+11Video makes me feel like a god.
Like the music by Megan Washington.
http://www.myspace.com/meganwashington - nurbsenvi, on 03/21/2009, -3/+10Let's buy stockpile of tilt-***** lens right now.
- iceman989, on 03/21/2009, -0/+6Yes the shots look miniature because of the tilt shift lens, but the lens in used in a way that the top and bottom is blurred to look like it was shot with a macro lens. This blurring of the top and bottom of the shot along with shooting from above the subject mimics the look of a miniature. More can be read about this at the following link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilt-shift_miniature_ ... - DeadFox1, on 03/21/2009, -1/+6I think pinkertinkle was joking...
- Benjigga, on 03/21/2009, -0/+5Buzz kill- this is an artistic video, not a lesson on survival.
- LoudMusic, on 03/21/2009, -3/+8First of all this is cool stuff. All his Vimeo work is fun to watch.
Second, I'm a photographer and I've never heard of tilt shift before. Time to do research! Fun stuff! - sassafras1232, on 03/21/2009, -0/+5Thank you, Captain Obvious! Once again, you have saved the Internet!
- selrahc, on 03/21/2009, -1/+6Tilt/Shift is too expensive to be the new HDR. The Lensbabies http://lensbaby.com/ had/have potential since they are so cheap, but they haven't really become quite as prevalent.
- jejones, on 03/21/2009, -0/+4The tilt-shift lens is used to make the depth of field very shallow, i.e. only a very little of it is in focus--which, as people have said, is the way a shot of a miniature with a macro lens would look, especially, as iceman989 points out, since it's all shot from above. The time lapse makes things jump around and appear and disappear as they would in really bad stop motion animation, adding to the effect.
- brownsound00, on 03/21/2009, -0/+4Thanks for actually answering the question... instead of posting that god damn "let me google that for you" link.
Sometimes people like to talk to people... - 5plic3r, on 03/21/2009, -1/+5http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilt-shift_miniature_ ...

- johnnyzero, on 03/21/2009, -0/+3hilarious!
- yuanzhoulu, on 03/21/2009, -0/+3well, tilt-shift also blurs quite a bit, losing all the scratches and real life weather marks, trash, scratches, and so on.
shooting an already perfect model and changing the DOF and saturation may get you closer to the colour balance and perspective of the real thing but would lack the weathered aspect.
in short, models aren't detailed enough, so you can't generate detail to make it look real. losing detail from real stuff, on the other hand, is much easier. - NJSlacker, on 03/22/2009, -0/+3the whole time he was in the drink all I could think was "I can't believe some guy stood there and took a million pictures of a guy drowning and getting swept out to sea"
Then I read the think about rescue training... - SoupGFX, on 03/21/2009, -1/+4I like small people. They make me smile.
- cliffhanger407, on 03/21/2009, -1/+4It's not a trade-off at all. It's a photographer's choice. Tilt shift-lenses allow you to change where the focal plane is, so by careful manipulation of the focal plane you can either create very small or incredibly large depth of field. Most of the photography with a tilt-shift lens is stuff people would never recognize as tilt-shift photography because it's mostly used for architectural photography. This is just a novelty usage with artistic purposes, but very little practical purpose. It is by no means the only thing these lenses can be used for.
- sorrodos, on 03/21/2009, -0/+3Lensbabies aren't really tilt-shift lenses.
- jonglebeats, on 03/21/2009, -1/+4Is there some kind of reverse of this technique to make models look more real?
- meleemaster500, on 03/21/2009, -2/+5The coast guard rescue was set up, or at least planned ahead, since there were many camera angles, and he obviously is not faster than that helicopter
- Irishsmurf, on 03/21/2009, -0/+3Thanks Ollie
