When I started my intentions were different than when I ended. Mostly a cure for boredom. Partly because I had a stack of free magazines and something to glue it too.

  • upisdown, on 05/05/2009, -0/+5The source of magazines was originally free magazines on the internet. Then I needed more and more so I started dumpster diving book stores like Barnes and Noble because they rip off the cover and throw out old magazines.

    It was a combination of both. I would read backwards for words I wanted and forward for neat phrases or words and group them together on a tray and glue them down when I liked them.

    The clippings are all from free magazines from the internet, given to me or dumpster dived from book stores because they tear off the cover and throw old magazines away.

  • upisdown, on 05/05/2009, -0/+3I'm not completely sure. Most of the words were laid down in spurts - I'd spent 4-8 hours a day for a week or two on it then take a break for a few days or weeks. Sometimes I only had time to do 15 minutes here and there between school and work.

    I was wondering if you had a particular source for the words used in this piece? Also, did you look for the words with certain ones in mind, or did you just cut them out as you came across them if they struck you? Thanks!

  • JugularJuice, on 05/05/2009, -0/+2I'd have to say that's the point. It's a different approach rather than having a computer program render the text to form over the dark/light of a picture, he manually pasted actual found type in an intentionally creative and expressive manner.
