I don't know where you've been but nearly every war waged by humans has been because of religion. The Holocaust, the wost war-time atrocity ever committed was headed by a man believing he was doing the right thing in God's eyes.

- Fred Phelps
- Pat Robertson says Hurricane Katrina was brought by God to punish us for accepting gays
- From what I am personally familiar with, Baptists and Catholics shun, ostracize and persecute people who divorce

When will people realize that the VERY few "good" Christians who aren't bigoted ***** are the EXTREME minority? Christianity is a hate mongering and narrow minded cult that has done nothing good for our society, in fact having committed great atrocities and heinous crimes AGAINST society and mankind. - Boner11, on 01/20/2008, -3/+1Just for the record, the two biggest murderers of the 20th century were: mao tse tung and joseph stalin. two atheists. - Nitesmoke, on 01/19/2008, -6/+40Scientology is the most dangerous "religion" in the world today. Say what you will about Christians or even Satanists, but other religions don't go out of their way to silence those that don't agree. If that was the case, there wouldn't be numerous denominations of Christianity, the largest would destroy or absorb the smaller ones. In Christianity, anyone who accepts Christ can be saved, in Scientology, only those who pay enough money are safe. If you don't like your local Christian church, just leave. The only retribution you might expect is the members choose to not be friends with you, and thats only in a few orthodox churches. If you try to leave the Church of Scientology, good luck, your life is in danger. Feel free to make as many websites as you like that are anti-Christian, but go ahead and make an anti-Scientology website and prepared to be sued. Now that this site has been Dugg, it won't be around long. Scientologists scour the web, looking for anything contrary to their propaganda, and do all they can to shut it down. - ChaosMotor, on 01/19/2008, -5/+5"but other religions don't go out of their way to silence those that don't agree."
For the most part, that's because the Judeo-Christian-Muslim lineage has been fighting wars over this for thousands of years, from the Crusades to the Council of Nicea to the Catholic-Protestant split to the Catholic-Anglican split to the current hubbub over Islamic and Christian fundamentalism. Scientology doesn't have the following for a full-on war so they work in special ops. - buckrogers1965, on 01/20/2008, -2/+6Actually the reason I hear for justifying the current gulf war from most Christian fundamentalists that I talk to is to stop the Muslims from taking over the earth.
- Nitesmoke, on 01/20/2008, -1/+1But, Muslim extremists are all over the web saying how they want Sharia law to apply to ALL countries, that anyone who disagrees should be killed.

- damosa, on 01/20/2008, -4/+1You should be nervous. Especially the real foaming-mouth-haters. Most of these really vocal religious haters have crimes for which they could be punished. And they know it and they fight anything that seeks to better anyone or anything which seeks to improve the world. It's not rational. Their own covered up crimes drives them batty. Before your tirade, ask yourself, "What have I done that makes me so nervous? What do I have on my computer that I'd be embarrassed if others found out about? What skeletons are my "closets"? What crime did I commit that would be detrimental if it were found out. It's out of the blood on your own hands that your hate and criticism grows. The most vocal ones have the biggest crimes they're sitting on.

- rebotfc, on 01/19/2008, -20/+190No because Scientology is not a religion it is a cult. A monolithic organisation with a single chain of command that relies on secrecy and extorting of money from at risk people.
- nblsavage, on 01/19/2008, -45/+98cult=a small unpopular religion
religion=a large popular cult- catbeller, on 01/19/2008, -6/+16All irrelevant. The subject is Scientology, not religion. Trying to broaden the focus is a simple way to try to defuse the issue, and no doubt Scientologists are first in line to try the trick on all threads.
- djcreamy, on 01/19/2008, -24/+11Are you talking Scientology, Catholicism, or Mormonism?
- djcreamy, on 01/19/2008, -16/+24I don't think my comment was clear enough.
Scientology, Catholicism, and Mormonism all basically fit the criteria of "monolithic organisation with a single chain of command that relies on secrecy and extorting of money from at risk people." Call it Papalcy, call it tithing, but it's still true.- athrasher, on 01/19/2008, -6/+17Since when is tithing a requirement to be a Christian?
- gllopc, on 01/19/2008, -4/+15You're right - It's not. A Christian is someone who follows the teachings of Christ. You can't give money to a dead man - but you CAN give it to a church. There's a lot of money to be had in teaching and leading a religion (see LRH), not much in following one.
- arbulus, on 01/20/2008, -1/+2If you're Baptist it is required.
- pattykakes887, on 01/19/2008, -4/+10Last time I checked other religions don't require you to pour thousands of dollars into their accounts before they let you in on the basic ideas of their religion. Scientology does. They are an extremely powerful and suppressive cult and if you think that religions like Christianity are equally dangerous you are kidding youself.
- athrasher, on 01/19/2008, -6/+17Since when is tithing a requirement to be a Christian?
- skyshock1, on 01/19/2008, -3/+4Yes, I agree with you. By your definition, all the other religions of the world are synonymous with cults as well.
- samshovel, on 01/19/2008, -4/+9The "Church" of Scientology is not a religion, nor is it a cult.
It is a cruelly-run scam that cynically exploits vulnerable innocents. It is a scam so large, that it is run as a business, but it works using the same techniques as any carny con-act. Just as a scam needs a front in order to appear legitimate, so Scientology have chosen to disguise their con as a religion.
Don't be taken in.
Don't perpetuate the misbelief that Scientology is in any way a religion.
It is not. - buymeachicken, on 01/20/2008, -1/+3No because Catholicism is not a religion it is a cult. A monolithic organisation with a single chain of command that relies on secrecy and extorting of money from at risk people.
- MrFisty, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2Religion or cult, the real question is how no one within the ranks of Scientology is suspicious their esteemed leader, the one who was alleged spoken to about these great truths, also happened to have a day job as A ***** SCIENCE FICTION WRITER. I don't know guys, I reckon he might have been making it up.
- arbulus, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1Yup. If Neil Gaiman tried to start a religion, I'd laugh. I'm really not sure why people didn't when Hubbard tried it.
- nblsavage, on 01/19/2008, -45/+98cult=a small unpopular religion
- davidrools, on 01/19/2008, -8/+56To be fair, some religious groups do nothing but good: feeding the homeless, tutoring kids, caring for the people no one else wants to, etc. But they are, unfortunately, the minority.
- Rikkochet, on 01/19/2008, -11/+6Some do, but many that do "selfless" things like that always dangle a carrot on a stick.
While you're recharging your batteries with that free meal, or a blanket to leave with, or staying in a shelter one night, there comes the pitch about how Jesus can permanently solve their problems.
NOBODY gives anything away from free, unless they are Jesus. And all we have left now are corporatized versions of his old fan club. Not healthy.- duckyinc, on 01/19/2008, -4/+3People who believe they are going to heaven or get karma give away free things, if not you won't be enjoying firefox, opera, open office, linux, piracy and so on :P

- arbulus, on 01/20/2008, -1/+1I don't know why people are digging him down, because it's the truth. The largest Baptist church in my city runs a homeless shelter and a shelter for battered women. You can stay there and get help or a free meal or a place to sleep, but you MUST go to church ever single time they have a service or they kick you to the curb immediately.
- duckyinc, on 01/19/2008, -4/+3People who believe they are going to heaven or get karma give away free things, if not you won't be enjoying firefox, opera, open office, linux, piracy and so on :P
- skunkman62, on 01/19/2008, -4/+2please do tell. name one.
- yfguitarist, on 01/20/2008, -2/+5I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not, so I'll assume it isn't. I volunteered over the summer at New Life Church where we helped mobilize dozens of groups of volunteers that went all over the city on weekends to help in different ways: visiting elderly, soup kitchens, painting, construction, trash pickup, etc. One of the days we had about a thousand volunteers. I'm not boasting, you asked for an example and I am giving you just one.
- BlueTunicLink, on 01/20/2008, -2/+2Have you ever heard of all the stuff the Mormons do? We don't even have paid clergy - it's all volunteer work.
- DephexTwin, on 01/20/2008, -1/+2At my church, we would have teenagers go to a poor part of the US to spend a week fixing up their house in whatever way they need for free. We paid for this venture by selling fruit and paying anything remaining out of our pockets. The families being helped knew it was a Christian organization of course, but we didn't do anything religious with them (that is to say, it wasn't pushed on them at all). I can't think of anything that was actually evil/corrupt/cynical, or selfish (except that we did always have a lot of fun... seriously, who knew it could be a blast doing something like that?).
Not that we were anything special... many small groups do things like this.
- timjim31, on 01/20/2008, -1/+2What? They are hardly in the minority.
- stackered, on 01/20/2008, -3/+2...and what is there motivation? To go to heaven - a reward. Instead of helping out just to be good people, they were drilled to do things in order to NOT go to hell and to go to heaven. Basically they were subconsciously learning to be greedy.
- Rikkochet, on 01/19/2008, -11/+6Some do, but many that do "selfless" things like that always dangle a carrot on a stick.
- lust, on 01/19/2008, -6/+11There are plenty of people who practice Protestant faith but will not vote for Huckabee. There plenty of people of Protestant Christians who make 50,000/year and yet donate at the most 1,000/year.
Cult religion involves brainwash to achieve a small religious group regarded as strange or as imposing excessive control over members for the purpose of creating a group with extreme or dangerous philosophical or political ideas.
If you think it is necessary to categorize all religion at cult, then you should also consider yourself as a cult member. Everybody believe in someone or something from Zionism, Buddhist, Islam, money, power, sex. Basically anything or anyone we hold our trust and undivided attention is religion.- Rikkochet, on 01/19/2008, -4/+6"Basically anything or anyone we hold our trust and undivided attention is religion."
Standard theist argument. Redefining a word and arguing semantics is just trying to avoid the topic of discussion. Religion is the organized behaviour in which a group of people behave and believe certain ways because their governing body tells them so.
By that logic anything that someone likes makes them a part of that religion. I like sex, video games, and beer. None of those are religions, but I encourage you to find a church for any of those and forward me the membership application.- whatever01, on 01/19/2008, -1/+4Ironic that you should first dismiss an argument as it is "redefining a word and playing semantics" and then you give your definition of a word and play semantics. Pot, kettle, black.
- buckrogers1965, on 01/20/2008, -1/+4The church of the flying spaghetti monsters promises a beer volcano and a stripper factory in the afterlife.

- SLockhart, on 01/19/2008, -9/+18People can bash Christians all they want but if it wasn't for my church a lot of non Christians in my town would go hungry. I'm sure my church is not the only one that gives a lot of money to the disadvantaged. We're not all hypocrites you know.
- SolipsismX, on 01/20/2008, -7/+5Yeah, but think about how much more your church could do if it were just an organization dedicated to charity. The costs that go into building and maintaining the church and its clergy could be spent on the disadvantaged.
- Nitesmoke, on 01/20/2008, -2/+6But they are gathering because of their faith, and also giving to charity. Why is it no matter what a christian does, you always have something to say about it? Your freedom of speech is the same as their freedom of religion.
- SLockhart, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2The Church is an organization dedicated to charity. Ours is the only organization that exists solely for the benefit it's non members.
- SolipsismX, on 01/20/2008, -7/+5Yeah, but think about how much more your church could do if it were just an organization dedicated to charity. The costs that go into building and maintaining the church and its clergy could be spent on the disadvantaged.
- sfacets, on 01/19/2008, -11/+6Hey most Christian churches demand money from their followers. Look how rich the Pope/Vatican is.
- reddikilowatt, on 01/19/2008, -1/+7There may be some that "demand" but I've never seen one. I'm not much of a Christian these days, but when I was, I attended many churches, in many denominations (as a musician). While they pass the plate around, there isn't anyone forcing you to pay for the latest chapter and verse of the Bible. In fact, for the most part, I've found the opposite - they freely give away information about the church and how to live. Try to get something for free from the scientologists (after the first "personality test"), it doesn't happen. You have to pay for enlightenment. It is a cult.
And, I believe the pope has to take a vow of poverty, but I don't know, as I'm not Catholic. I'm not defending the lavish spending that goes on for ornaments in a church property, but for the most part, truly religious people tend to live life on the cheap.- webtroll, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3Well in my home-country unfortunately there is a "church tax" that any member of the major christian churches (Catholics, Lutherans, but also Jews) has to pay no matter if you "use" church services/charities/meetings/etc. or not. And it's pretty high (about 8% of your taxes) and finances 70% of the churches budget. But you can avoid paying this tax by "opting out" of your religion, kind of publicly denouncing your faith. This is an unfortunate construction and a lot of people aren't happy with. I too would rather want to give/donate the money directly to worthy causes in my community than into some gigantic statewide budget (the church budget in my parish - a major city - alone is in the 3 figure millions), but that isn't an option. Still the difference to a cult like Scientology is: You can opt out of paying for the church, and nobody will try or be able to stop you.
- reddikilowatt, on 01/19/2008, -1/+7There may be some that "demand" but I've never seen one. - timjim31, on 01/20/2008, -3/+3***** You
- bobthegreat1224, on 01/20/2008, -1/+2There are as many sadistic, cruel, and fundamentally evil people outside of religion as there are inside it. Malice and greed are not bound to any particular section of humanity, and if you believe otherwise you're a blind fool. Atheism is not the end all answer to the world's problems, but merely another belief system (believe it or not, there is no absolute proof of the absence of a god). Atheism does not enforce morals or altruism, and religion is not the harbinger of the world's impending doom.
- zen4444, on 02/09/2008, -0/+1Atheism is a fresh start, where nothing is taboo, and where all ideas are open to scrutiny and debate. Religion is too bogged down in murky tradition and dogma, too unwieldy and oppressive to be used as anything but a ball & chain, retarding humanity's progress towards a better world.

- kingmanic, on 01/19/2008, -2/+12Given the time frame in question and the evil per member Scientology has them beat on doing it in a shorter span and fewer members. Don't dilute the argument against the Scientology crime syndicate with vague notions that it's fully equivalent to all other religions. it much worse in comparison.

- AvidPreatorian, on 01/20/2008, -1/+2Obviously you know very little religion. Maybe you shouldn't learn from news scandals and digg's commonly negative comments and submissions (you miss out on the other side of the coin). Religion saves lives (i've seen it), it is about peace, family, structure, and love. Don't let corrupt people who explore it dim the the power religious messages have. You don't have to believe in God to agree with Jesus's teachings, or Buddah's (OK not Xenu's but that's just a matter of intelligence.)
My favorite quote of the Christian religion: "Love others as well as you love yourself."

I think the scientologist are well within their rights to form a religion....Just as you and I are capable...In hollywood there seems to be three major powers competing for dominance....there is a fourth but everyone knows that their existance is subsidized to the point where they would implode if not for their covert funding...Scientologist are one of the major players here....I think the religous tax advantage helped solidify their power in Hollywood....Just some thoughts.

- DannySpace, on 01/19/2008, -2/+181One day I was walking in a shopping center, located in Alaska. I noticed a sign outside of a cafe that read "Free IQ Test". I thought it would be a neat Idea since I have never taken one outside of a establishment of Higher Education. As I was going through the Application Process, things started getting strange. I felt extremely Pressured to sign a form that stated I would attend a five hour "self-help" session after I took the test. I didn't have five hours to spare, so I declined and they kept telling me: "you will want to attend this session" and "So how do you believe this session, that you will attend, will change your life". It was all so weird and in my face... And then it all came out. They were Scientologists, and they were holding a recruiting day. I was out of there, and I snatched the paperwork that I had already filled out from the table. They tried to tell me that I could not take that information, but I did... And I literally "jogged" back to my car.

- kingmanic, on 01/19/2008, -2/+11The difference is murder is much less common per capita and evil is much less common as well. Your diminishing the argument against Scientology not provoking more outrage at organized religion. I'm not sure if thats an intended consequence but Scientology ought not deserve to treated as anything less then a organized crime syndicate hiding as a religion. Religions have their faults too but don't dilute the strong argument about criminalizing this organization with the broader argument that Religion in general may lack value in a modern world.

But I have a hard time believing what some guy on YTMND has to say. These "truths" are not backed up, and this guy seems to have an agenda just like any religion has their agenda. Not saying he's lying, but I want to hear both sides of this issue before I go out persecuting scientologists. Some of his "facts" seem pretty one-sided and overeaggerated. - dontaskagain, on 01/20/2008, -1/+4What about the un-organised ones? But seriously some religions do good for people and communities. Who could say the 10 commandments don't make a useful moral compass? If Scientology acted more like a religion (less suing, extortion and intimidation) then i'm sure they would be 'accepted' rather than ridiculed and feared. I hear they like to show up at disasters and accidents, offer help and support to people while the reality seems to be it's all PR and recruitment. If only their good deeds did not come at a price then they would be off to a good start in the religious world..

- cl0n3x, on 01/19/2008, -2/+8I didn't find that video funny, but I'll be xenud if I still don't find Scientology one of the funniest religions out there.
- EvilBunnys, on 01/19/2008, -1/+9Scientology is not a religion. It's a scam, they're trying to evade taxes and federal investigation by saying that it's a religion.
- Varz, on 01/19/2008, -1/+4What they believe is funny what they do to people isn't.
- likwidfuzion, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1The video isn't intended to be funny to begin with.
