just because you do these basic things doesnt mean you're not free. or that you are some type of drone.
I promise there is no one else like you in the world. - eh123, on 08/28/2008, -10/+408The only thing sadder than a conformist is someone who thinks they're a non-conformist.

- bgrah449, on 08/27/2008, -15/+173It's unremarkable that a graffiti artist doesn't respect the lifestyle of the white middle class nuclear family. The person who wrote this was probably young, probably in search of adventure; probably still trying to discover his identity to feel comfortable in his own skin, so he has his ears perked up, so to speak, for conformity. I can't fault him for that.
But remember that a lot of people have struggled in their youth, lived through danger, and those things make them happy. I wouldn't be so quick to show contempt for the lifestyle. - bluebettle, on 08/28/2008, -11/+146Websites too.
For example, you go to Digg a lot and some people become self-righteous and condescending to people who do everyday activities like watching TV - NathanielJ, on 08/28/2008, -17/+152I spent a good 3 years of my life not watching TV and not once did I have any of the trouble that you mentioned.

On a wall near my house. in a word; Epic. - thaddeusj, on 08/28/2008, -17/+101This graffiti artists is a whining cop-out. I propose:
1. Find graffiti artist
2. Take artist to Yukon wilderness for 3 weeks
3. Graffiti artist longs for structure of his list
See you can be free as he imagines if you are living for yourself in the middle of nowhere, except it would suck more than integrating into society. That is why there is society. Mankind became creative and thus settled and built infrastructure so people could do more in a day than wake, find food, eat, poop, sex, sleep.
Said graffiti artist bought his lunch a McDonalds, bathed in municipally supplied water, and got news from the next town over via a radio. Now he has tons of time for other things! How often would I get to go snowboarding if I had to hunt for food all winter? (ɹǝʌǝu :ɹǝʍsuɐ) See, you're actually MORE FREE! Now in his newly found spare time he gets to write whiny hippy ***** on a wall that invalidates it's own point through its very existence. And we have time to banter about it on Digg. Think I'll go grab an apple from the fridge, that was grown in another friggen continent and brought to my local grocer fresh by drones in the system. - NathanielJ, on 08/28/2008, -5/+81This was stupid the last time it was posted on digg.

- Shirleycakes, on 08/28/2008, -6/+79Go to a factory, imprison your kids, wear a burka, stay quiet, get in line, read whatever books your government allows, give all to the great leader, obey the law or face labor camps.
Repeat after ME: I'll take the TV and Fashion road, thank you very much.
I don't think life is perfect in the "west" but it certainly beats other parts of the world.
Buried as "Privileged kids in the UK can talk all the ***** they want and should try the third world, or perhaps being a woman in Saudi Arabia." - TheDHC, on 08/28/2008, -5/+70Explain to me how any of these things are bad?
- bluebettle, on 08/28/2008, -2/+66Because, like, man, everybody else is doing it, you know?
Sending your kids to school totally, like, makes you a slave in the conformist culture, man. - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -6/+67Just be yourself, and if it happens to be on that list, so be it.
You shouldn't try to act the opposite of what people consider normal, just to be non-normal. Just be you. If it's abnormal, so be it. - DrPh0bius, on 08/27/2008, -89/+143You're missing the point entirely. The point is not to do these things, the point is that if you DO NOT do these things you are seen as potential trouble, put on "watch lists," and viewed as someone who is odd.
TV is a good example. Stop watching TV for a couple of months, and then go and try to have a conversation with the majority of people out there. Even if you can avoid topics that are TV based, youll notice how much TV influences behavior, actions and things people say. - Harabeck, on 08/28/2008, -1/+53Remember kids, not doing something just because everyone else does is just as bad as doing it because they do. Youre still a mindless prick basing your actions on those of others. Do what is you, regardless of everyone else.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -12/+61Goddamn, I am free....
Maybe some digg users are uptight...I don't know, but I'm completely free, I do what I want, and don't give a crap about general opinion or this dumb graffiti artist's opinion. I'll save for old age and send me kids to school, obey the law and walk on the pavement if I want. I'll feel as free as this dumb *****.
If I feel happy, who cares? - feliks2, on 08/28/2008, -20/+68Okay, fine. Don't work. ***** the kids. And most importantly, overdose on cocaine at a young age so you neither have to follow the law, nor save for old age. Oh yeah, and don't forget to cloth yourself in canvas rags or other odd items while walking in the middle of the road.
- PwncakesFTW, on 08/28/2008, -3/+50I'm sure the oppressed kids in Africa would read this and realize how lucky they are that they don't have to live under the enslavement that we endure, watching t.v. and all.
- mattmy, on 08/28/2008, -1/+44I really hate these kinds of titles.
so presumptuous - Thejax, on 08/28/2008, -1/+42Well in a way we are all free to do what we want, its just that most people would rather be free to live like that.

I'm completely different than this.
I don't go to work (I'm currently looking for a job)
I don't have kids so I'm not sending them to school
I really don't follow fashion.
I don't act "normal" all the time, since IMO there is no such thing as a "normal person".
I really don't watch that much TV.
I'm not currently saving for my old age, since I'm very young at the moment (although I should probably start thinking about it).
And I think I speak for everybody when I say that I don't always follow the law. Don't tell me you've never sped or downloaded a song at one point in your life.
Buried for inaccuracy. - redslash, on 08/28/2008, -5/+36Free ...
free....
what the heck does "free" mean?
Freedom means to be able to do what you want. I kinda agree with all those things. I really do prefer sidewalks to pavement. I want to retire when I'm old and want to save money to achieve that. Etc.
Free != unique. - flxfxp, on 08/28/2008, -2/+31Buy it, use it, break it, fix it,

I am free. - Sroek, on 08/28/2008, -0/+24Being a non-conformist for the sake of being a non-conformist makes you a conformist.
- circa1015, on 08/28/2008, -8/+30The point isn't to show how odd you are if you live this way. The message is that there is some kind of supposed virtue in a non-conformist lifestyle. This, of course, is beyond bogus. The top poster is right, everybody is unique. If you live what I will shallowly describe as a "conventional" lifestyle, the one described in the picture, there is nothing inherently better or worse about it than the lifestyle the artist would have you believe to be more free.
Of course, if you would like to know why so many people do these things, picture how your life would be if you followed the advice of the sagely graffiti artist. Not too many people want to be socially ostracized, unable to support their family, and in jail. But hey, to each his own. - drmangrum, on 08/28/2008, -3/+25"All non-conformists are alike"

My pension for retirement was taken care of over ten years ago, I will receive 80% of the average income over the 5 years prior to retirement.
I don't own a house because I am not a carpenter, a painter, a plumber, a gardener nor an electrician or a roofer and I don't have any interest in any of the areas mentioned.
And I'm not a crazy religious moron stuck in bronze age mythology nor am I offended by any ones sexuality nor how they live unless they try to push their lifestyle on me.
Oh yeah, I love to smoke some good weed too and I have been known to indulge in other ummm products from time to time, I don't eat ***** fast food and even though I'm past the 50's I am not obese nor dead :)
And I have never spent a night in a hospital.

- bratterscain, on 08/28/2008, -2/+22Wake up, go to school, put on daily eyeshadow like all other "anarchists", hang out and follow all the other "anarchists", joke with other "anarchists" about how we're so different and they're not, spray grafitti to act like a rebellious teen with other "anarchists", rinse and repeat.
We're humans. We're not much different from each other. Just because we're a lot alike doesn't mean we're not free. I'd argue about the freedom but the boredom and monotony of how it all can be, I wouldn't. I'm not one who gets a kick from the mainstream lifestyle mentioned in the pic. I feel the same way a lot of the time and have to change my routine. - thaddeusj, on 08/28/2008, -0/+20My point was about society and not backpackers (I too have logged many trail days). I still think our "repressed" graffiti artist would have a profound change of opinion, based on my experiences. So about the artist, my statement stands. About society, well, you came back didn't you? Anyone who says they found bliss then left on their on volition for a less desirable existence is either a fool or a liar. I doubt you're either. You probably really enjoyed the contrast, like I do when hiking, but I suspect you came back for more than your SV job.
- sidianmsjones, on 08/28/2008, -1/+21You're not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank. You're not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet. You're not your ***** khakis. You're the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world.

- wreckosaurus, on 08/28/2008, -5/+22Stupidest ***** I've seen today. If you don't want to send your kids to school, walk on pavement (?) or have a job, you're free to live in a trailer park for the rest of your life gloating on how much better you are than the conformists. I'll take a house and education for my kids, thanks.
- m4csrgh3yk3v, on 08/28/2008, -0/+17totally original, I swear!
- Poochyfud, on 08/28/2008, -1/+18The best part is that someone has gone and posted this thing AGAIN, yet the message of the graffiti is NOT to be repetitive and conformist.
- dafragsta, on 08/28/2008, -6/+23Freedom is a state of mind, not rebelling against the norm because some graffiti wants you to. If those things make you happy, so be it. I know SOME level of those things makes MOST people happy. It's just important to break that monotony and make sure you do things you are proud of and enjoy. Just because you go to work every day doesn't mean you don't do something you feel is on some level worthwhile.
I guess the hippy graffiti would have you live like an animal in the woods.
