- fabkebab, on 02/26/2009, -10/+327I might have agreed, except that handwriting is one of the first things EVERY KID LEARNS IN SCHOOL - so it probably has a while before we can really call it "dying"
- JackGrinnan, on 02/26/2009, -8/+270Meanwhile I totally forgot cursive...
- jonesyno, on 02/26/2009, -13/+234I hate cursive, and I hate all of you!!!
I'm never going back to school. . .NEVER! - DavidWalkerTV, on 04/14/2009, -43/+262This is not necessarily a bad thing. Most people's handwriting I know is truly awful.
- sexybobo, on 02/26/2009, -4/+204Name one doctor that you could read what he wrote.
- TMTurtle, on 02/26/2009, -5/+195Good. We learn cursive in 3rd grade and by 4th the teachers tell us to stop using that ***** because it's a waste of time.
- gsadamb, on 02/26/2009, -5/+129I'm a software engineer, and honestly, I have to say that for me, sometimes the best way to figure out a problem is via some good old-fashioned handwriting. This includes when I'm taking notes while coding that will be easier to reference when I'm working on a different file. But even more helpful, when trying to figure out a problem, whiteboarding it out works so well. I guess it's maybe because your mind has to work a little more slowly and focused when you're unable to dump your thoughts out at 140 WPM on a keyboard.
And back when I was in college, my most effective method of studying for tests was to write out plenty of notecards to quiz myself with. The notecards themselves helped, but I think it was just the act of writing out the answers that helped commit the info into my memory in the most effective way. - bashnu, on 02/26/2009, -4/+103Yet our signatures are always Awesome!
- DrHoliday, on 02/26/2009, -2/+101It gets better when he writes the bill.
- nextag82, on 02/26/2009, -6/+97Sounds like you just wanked it to your 3rd grade crush.
- inactive, on 02/26/2009, -16/+105Since when was hand writing ever legible?
- Gravey9, on 02/26/2009, -9/+96That's exactly what the articles talking about, and it's definitely not a good thing.
- Rudegar, on 02/26/2009, -0/+80I'm left handed
I'm a lazy slob
my handwriting is a natural encryption - inactive, on 02/26/2009, -6/+76cursive. the devil's penmanship
- wily6, on 02/26/2009, -1/+69I remember in elementary school they said that in middle school and high school you're absolutely required to write in cursive. Such bull.
- inactive, on 02/26/2009, -4/+70Cursive sucks, I never believed that bull it is faster because you never have to take your pen off the page, you spend just as much time if not more making loops and being frilly.
- chanop, on 02/26/2009, -0/+60@sexybobo, Worked in pharmacys and currently working for Health Insurance companies, I honestly don't think there is a single doctor with legible handwriting
- Nintendesert, on 02/26/2009, -3/+59Every school I know of still does.
- thcobbs, on 02/26/2009, -5/+59That's kinda the point. It used to be that legible script was a sure sign of education.
- yuanzhoulu, on 02/26/2009, -4/+51yea i don't use cursive, but cursive is harder to read anyway so i don't mind if it freaking dies. my eyes hurt when i have to read stuff other people have written in cursive.
- EnterReality, on 02/26/2009, -7/+53How come my doctor has the worst handwriting I've ever seen?
- UnFriendlyFire, on 02/26/2009, -1/+47Substitute Teacher: Bart, do you know cursive?
Bart: Well, I know hell and damn and bi... - inactive, on 02/26/2009, -0/+46That's because you take 10 seconds per letter.
- bobburn1, on 02/26/2009, -0/+36Billy! Come back Billy!
- densetsu23, on 02/26/2009, -1/+37I 100% agree. Most likely because you can quickly jot down not only notes but diagrams (quick little flowcharts, UML diagrams, etc) that are a pain to create digitally.
- Key2gb, on 02/26/2009, -1/+34they forgot about the whole school/college thing
- Methusalah, on 02/26/2009, -7/+38Anything I write by hand also has that touch of aggravation knowing that I could've communicated the same information 20 times faster if I had typed it out.
- scubaninja, on 02/26/2009, -2/+32Doctors have such sloppy handwriting because they have to take furious notes in medical school, and sign and initial, in some cases, over 100 times a day. If they wrote any slower, they would not be able to keep up, and it turns into habit.
- archer104, on 02/26/2009, -6/+31you will do AS YOUR TOLD!!!!
- Hoogs, on 02/26/2009, -0/+24Lol, same here. Didn't you just love having a silver pinkie at the end of the school day? :)
- bbhill, on 06/16/2009, -1/+24I've never been able to write a good signature. My handwriting used to be superb up until high school. Then I realized nobody really gave a ***** if we wrote. So i just started printing and my signature sucks. Each time I sign its a little bit different. . . =/
- drgmdp, on 02/26/2009, -2/+25YOU'RE
- MelekTawus, on 02/26/2009, -7/+29They are talking about cursive. Many schools no longer teach it.
- alpha88, on 02/26/2009, -4/+26It's not a slow death, it's been nearly dead for a while now. In elementary school, they spent little time teaching handwriting, then when asked to hand in assignments, kids were allowed to choose whether to print or to handwrite, and of course they always chose printing. Unfortunately they spent just as little time teaching how to type (possibly even less), and now my generation has a disadvantage when it comes to typing fast, accurately, and ergonomically.
- RobotBuddha, on 02/26/2009, -10/+31Good. Having two methods of writing is just plain stupid. I think it's important to learn to read it, for legacy reasons. But it's absolutely pointless to continue using cursive.
- TruthKid, on 02/26/2009, -2/+22I can't say there is ever a situation where script is easier to read then serif. Maybe that's why books aren't printed in cursive, because its harder to read? Granted I think cursive looks better when used in an appropriate circumstance (not everyday use) and when written correctly, but readability is not one of the pro's generally associated with script.
- Greenergrass, on 02/26/2009, -12/+32Real letters are so personal and sensual, there is the mood we have at the moment, the message, the way of writing some words and the smell and we keep them.
- gsadamb, on 02/26/2009, -2/+22Ah, well then I agree that it's pretty archaic and definitely not something that should be so heavily focused on in elementary school. I remember that they spent a considerable amount of time teaching students how to write in cursive, and it's never been particularly useful.
If they want to give the kids a useful skill, they should replace the time spent teaching cursive and replace it with typing instruction instead. - xOKxWhy, on 02/26/2009, -1/+21Meanwhile I only use a mixture of cursive and scribbles
- yuanzhoulu, on 02/26/2009, -3/+22*****, i still have to write so much every day.
like working out formulas, algebra, equations. (i'm a grad student) the very fact that people have to go through the trouble to do this by hand in order for them to have the necessary research skills means people will always still have to do algebra by hand in the educational stage.
like filling out paper forms which will no matter what you say always still exist.
etc. sure my handwriting is crap but people can read it. - kernel16, on 02/26/2009, -0/+18Math is going to keep handwriting alive, because doing computer math is annoying as *****.
- sebey, on 02/26/2009, -0/+18"my handwriting is a natural encryption"
lol same! - petebot, on 02/26/2009, -1/+19Rirruto?
- protodon, on 02/26/2009, -2/+17All doctors do, it's so they can mess up your prescription. I admit I have bad handwriting but to all the doctors you can slow the ***** down and write legibly
- skyshock1, on 02/26/2009, -0/+14Until the first thing kids learn in school is how to TYPE. THEN we can call it dying.
- DoodleMaster, on 02/26/2009, -1/+15Nah it's not going anywhere it's way to convenient and necessary in day to day activities that this author seems to leave out since they are very minor.
Will typing replace things that were traditionally written (letters papers agreements all forms of documents legal or other wise) yes but for a grocery list or taking down someones information nothing can be done as fast or efficiently as a pen and paper.
Sensationalism at it's finest. The author makes it sound as if though it's the end of learning or education or just being intelligent in general. - noumuon, on 02/26/2009, -0/+14oddly enough, the only people i know with beautiful script writing are people whose native language isn't english,
- jayman488, on 02/26/2009, -0/+14I'll turn this DAMN bus AROUND.......that'll end your PRECIOUS field trip pretty DAMN quick!!
- crazyhorse13, on 02/26/2009, -0/+14Yeah, I've always thought cursive was pointless. You're just writing in someone else's bad handwriting. This became apparent to me when my own horrible printing produced a cursive S.
- kingmanic, on 02/26/2009, -1/+14The secret is often the pharmacy calls the doctor to verify the prescription. Many doctors now have it typed out to avoid errors.
