The Man who Flies with the Fishes
make.pingmag.jp — May 5 is Children ’s Day in Japan, a national holiday. In the weeks leading up to this day, large flags shaped like carp called koi nobori begin to appear, hanging from city apartment balconies, flying atop poles in farmhouse gardens, and strung in long lines across country rivers.

- arcticblue, on 04/30/2008, -0/+7I haven't read the article yet, but I live in Japan and these flags are everywhere. Some of them have really interesting designs and I've even seen one that had some Dragonball Z characters on it! Children's day is just part of a string of holidays that make up Golden Week. It's Japan's version of Spring Break and everyone flocks to Okinawa (where I live) to go to the beach and enjoy the warm weather. Traffic really sucks this time of year.
Now off to read the article :P- arcticblue, on 04/30/2008, -1/+2Just read the article. Very interesting! I had no idea about the origin and meaning of the fish flag. Dugg.

- nshady, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2This is a tricky one. It's actually 'fish' in plural form as well. Crazy, eh?
- zadadka, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Only in English.
- aladrin, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4Not when you're talking about multiple kinds of fish.

So yeah, I guess you were right about 1 thing: It was a tricky one.- nshady, on 06/02/2008, -0/+1I appreciate the heads up.
- tensaibaka, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Right before Golden Week in Japan is the best time to go to the outskirts and see the houses with the really big koi nobori flying outside. If you get really enthusiastic people, they'll have lots of different colors flying that just looks awesome.
- aladrin, on 04/30/2008, -1/+4Good on him for seeing the problem and how to not only fix it, but thrive afterwards. I like hearing stories of people who succeed by their own skill, instead of by cheating the system.
- CitizenSweeps, on 04/30/2008, -0/+8"Only the carp that can swim up the Yellow River can become dragons."
Holy crap Magikarp makes so much sense now. - pumavan, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2im in the ocean swimmin' with the pigeons
- bonkeykong, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2"I'm probably in the sky flying with the fishes, or maybe in the ocean swimming with the pigeons"
- Lil' Wayne, Da Drought 3 - doctechnical, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4And when this gentleman passes away, we can say "So long, and thanks for all the fish".
- roosterjack, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Its quite a skill to fly those fishes. But I think those are kites and not flags as what is written in the article.
- Celeron, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Michael Jackson should move to Japan.
- jayrok, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1I suggest combining holidays with Cinco de Mayo - fill those koi with candy!
- quamb, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Thanks for the great interview / article! Really inspiring. And refreshing to find something like this linked on digg!
