- johnleemk, on 07/05/2008, -0/+46The notion of a 3-year-old sobbing that he "wants the local..." is hilarious.
- dantidote, on 07/06/2008, -2/+45I ***** love that picture for some reason.
- arbouler, on 07/06/2008, -0/+37there is no way those kids will ever leave manhattan when they grow up.
- deusexmachina1, on 07/06/2008, -1/+31Gustav is an awesome name.
- gmuril1, on 07/06/2008, -2/+27I used to be the same way when i was 4, living in Guadalajara, Mexico. I would tell my grandpa to take me to "El Tren" and we would ride it for about an hour and come back home. Best times spent with my grandpa.
- kinseyincanada, on 07/06/2008, -0/+24well that was the cutest story ive read for a long time.
- gmuril1, on 07/06/2008, -2/+21Na I'm good i dont need a ***** redneck telling me what to do
- acroyear2, on 07/06/2008, -0/+19How did an art blog post appear on the front page of digg and why doesn't this happen more often?
- zyklon, on 07/06/2008, -1/+16Why, because the blue-haired kid has a broken leg?
- macaddct1984, on 07/06/2008, -0/+13The L Train in NYC will take you between Manhattan and Brooklyn!
- projectstartrek, on 07/06/2008, -0/+12I'm sorta like this with the DC Subway, but it's a lot easier
- subliminali, on 07/06/2008, -7/+19i think the fact that he named one of his sons 'Gustav' explains a lot about this family.
- IanPR, on 07/06/2008, -0/+12Damn me and my small subway-less city.
Wayyy over my head :( - addicted68098, on 07/06/2008, -0/+12The subway sounds like a lot of fun...too bad I'm stuck with 30+ minute bus rides.
- BestJaxx, on 07/06/2008, -0/+11That's my brother's name. He is insane.
- projectstartrek, on 07/06/2008, -1/+11Maybe he can smack you too, while he's at it.
- macaddct1984, on 07/06/2008, -0/+10El Tren ... L Train
Just the first thing that popped into my head. - tunafizzle, on 07/06/2008, -11/+18Cheap bastard probably told his kids, "Hey kids, chuck e cheese/mcdonalds/six flags is where the boogeyman lives. We don't wanna go there.... let's goto the subway instead!".
Now the kids have some disgusting subway obsession. By the time these kids hit puberty they will end up masturbating to photo's of subway trains.
poor little Gustav - xDynaBlade, on 07/06/2008, -0/+7All they have to do is come to Boston, ride the MBTA, and they'll be cured of their obsession.
- rebirf, on 07/06/2008, -5/+11You can have it but it still won't be funny.
- paulmer2003, on 07/06/2008, -2/+8Anyone from California? The BART system in the Bay Area is excellent. Always an interesting ride, to see the city, all the people, etc. Good system. Always on time.
- theNEOone, on 07/06/2008, -2/+8Funny story - heh. There's no real mystery to the NYC subway system, though. I'm always surprised when people say "they just don't get it"....it's not any more complex than navigating on the road IMO. Alot of people ask me how I know my way around automatically, or how I know which way to turn once I exit a station. It's not any different than riding in a car and using landmarks, really. You just get used to it. No different for kids. Still though, neat story. I liked the pics.
- Disease, on 07/06/2008, -0/+6It would fit right in with Call of Duty 2.
- gmuril1, on 07/06/2008, -0/+5o_O lol oh haha I'm a little slow tonight lmao
- agush, on 07/06/2008, -0/+5ahh so the internet is only for people who live in the US
- BestJaxx, on 07/06/2008, -0/+5Well, that was a nice story, but it was a little anit-climatic. I was looking for a next page button when I reached the end.
- andy314159pi, on 07/06/2008, -2/+6If they do leave Manhattan, they'll be sad to find how sprawl has suburbanized most other American cities. Post your exceptions here...
- Logal, on 07/06/2008, -0/+4Easier is an understatement.
- 0scar, on 07/06/2008, -1/+5I bet all the creeps and weirdos you see on the subway were once like these little guys.
You might want to start building up their immunity to mace and pepper-spray before they hit puberty. Just a thought. - Yookji, on 07/06/2008, -0/+4I used to love riding the D.C. subway when I was a kid.
- andy314159pi, on 07/06/2008, -1/+4yeah having enthusiasm for something is now a mental illness. /sarcasm
- digger_twit, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3It only connects a small area in San Francisco...
I'm stuck with riding MUNI for 50 minutes to work (each way.) :| - gmuril1, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3What?
- nikkilai, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3When I lived in Rome, I would always see these same two little girls with their grandpa on the subway route I took. They were always so stoked to be on the subway and would sing songs about their stop or how many stops they had left until their destination. Perhaps it's one of those universal childhood amusements. Well, if you grew up in a city with a subway and not boring suburbia like I did...
- jonnyfatman, on 07/06/2008, -2/+4Hmmm. Sounds a lot like Asperger's syndrome.
- KingGorilla, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2Damn, you already named your kid that? I was going to
- HappyScrappy, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2I just spent 4 days in NYC. I didn't get in a car once, I rode the subway (and the AirTrain) the whole time. In fact, I almost did nothing but ride the subway and walk around. Of each 12+ hour day I spent out, I spent less than 3 hours in actual buildings each day.
And I have to say you're way overstating the simplicity. I'm sure you know all this stuff, but for some reason, you think it's obvious.
First of all the letters don't connect to the numbers well except in a few places like Times Square. In many places they don't really connect at all. At Penn Station, you can go to a letter or a number, but really they're at opposite ends of the complex, probably almost a half mile apart. Where the V "connects" to the 4-5-6, it only connects in one direction. From the V you can only go to the 4-5-6 downtown, and from the 4-5-6 downtown you can go to the V (either direction). There's no connection to the uptown 4-5-6.
The reason for this is that the Bleecker St station is one of those split stations where you have to enter in two different places to go two different directions. You can see the two sides from each other across the tracks, but you can't switch between them. 23rd Street & Broadway (at the Flatiron Bldg.) on the NRQW is the same way. And so are many others.
The local/express system is incredibly confusing at first (not even counting the diamond trains, like the incredibly oddball 6), although once you get used to it, you realize it works very well. A person who wants to go from (for example) Brooklyn to the Bronx can ride a train in from any stop in Brooklyn, change trains once (at most) and to any stop in the Bronx, and also get nearly the maximum advantage from the speed of express trains.
Then there's the A train having two eastern termini. This wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, except that this is the route you take to the airport, and half the trains won't go there.
It's great you know which direction to go coming out of the stations. Not everyone does. Even city dwellers asked me which way was uptown at times. Really, as you exit any station, right as you step onto the sidewalk, there should be a small compass rose set in the concrete at your feet with a arrow pointing to uptown.
It also gets ungodly hot down there. I'm not sure what they could do about it, but it could use some improvement.
Anyway, I really like your subway system a lot. It's wonderful, and you're very lucky to have it. - kenkyomausu, on 07/06/2008, -2/+4People on chan boards already do it.
http://www.1chan.net/rail/ - johnl87, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2I used to love taking the subway as a kid. Something about watching the tracks and the rooftops (from the J) and of course everyone knows trains rule. But a few years later my mother bought a car and I rarely got to take the train :(
- cdigioia, on 07/06/2008, -2/+3Imagine how much they'd love a clean subway...
- Bkaufman, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1I wish it ran after 12:45. I'm sick of being ripped off when I'm drunk by A-hole cabbies.
- MookiBlaylock, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Love the BART
- dadotron, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1That is a very hart warming story. I know of a couple of kids like them, who love cars. They are friends and they argue about cars all the time and which one is more right or wrong. Year, make, color, original tires and engine.... Both of them are autistic. Not severely, just enough to be diagnosed that. I just wonder if these boys are slightly autistic too?
- KingGorilla, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1Not as cheap as the subway and the stops are rather limited but you can't beat the view! Aerial rails are awesome
- Trichomonas, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1I have to agree. It made me smile a few times.
- blanketfury, on 07/06/2008, -3/+4Both of you need to go back to Canada.
Problem solved. - kdog181518, on 07/06/2008, -1/+1LOCAL,I WANT THE LOCAL
- kenkyomausu, on 07/06/2008, -1/+1This whole story sounds like something out of Yotsuba&!
I LOVE IT! - onestrawplz, on 07/06/2008, -1/+1it's really not that hard.
