flickr.com — From the photographer: I, like many others, have seen in the center of certain orchids what appears to be a small bird of some kind. Well here's an idea... what if at night, when no one was looking these little birds happen to come alive & flutter about exploring us & the world around them.

Many orchids attract specific male insect pollinators with flower parts which mimic a female insect of the same species ready to mate, and that is the case with this variety. They are so convincing that the hapless suitors pollinate the flower by actually copulating with it. The orchids even go to the trouble of mimicking the female insect's pheromone, which, of course; is not an unusual technique in the world of flowering plants. Most of the flower scents humans enjoy are actually duplications of some bug's mating scent.
