- CrotchetyOldMan, on 08/23/2008, -0/+42Plastic Tonka Trucks? That's just sad.
- RubberBinder, on 08/25/2008, -0/+23They left out Hot Wheels. The cars themselves are still good, but the tracks suck, they leave no room for imagination. I remember taking who knows how man feet of that orange plastic track and making ramps by leaning it against the couch, or placing it on top of books and pillows, now all you can buy are the theme sets where your car launches into the mouth of a dinosaur and you get 5 minutes of fun, then the thing gets shelved. I feel sorry for the kids these days.
- inactive, on 08/24/2008, -0/+22The sad thing is, I actually remember most of the original designs,
- opticwind, on 08/23/2008, -0/+22My Little Pony, Apocalypse Pony!
- inactive, on 08/23/2008, -0/+21Spirograph really got a makeover
- asteroid, on 08/23/2008, -0/+18Oh my. They really destroyed a lot of old favorites (even if they weren't all MY old favorites). Good digg, though; thanks for posting this.
- BeShirtHappy, on 08/23/2008, -0/+16I just bought my son a travel sized Etch-A-Sketch (the original). And Slinky - metal all the way! They really don't make things like they use to... :(
- tabion, on 08/25/2008, -8/+21***** FOX NEWS oh ***** wrong post
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 08/25/2008, -0/+11I loved Lincoln Logs as a kid. Shame they're going plastic, the wood just felt soo much better.
- inactive, on 08/23/2008, -0/+9I remember a WHOLE different Barbie doll when I was young.
- lisaawesome, on 08/25/2008, -0/+8I heard the new monopoly has an electronic banker thing with no money? Is this true? I think that is just a bastardization of the game! How else are we to teach the kids how to count and then how to cheat? Come on!
- styrchn, on 08/23/2008, -0/+8What the heck?! Hehe, I guess the collectibles market just got a major boost. The old etch a sketch was sooo much better.
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -2/+9***** THE RIAA...
*looks around*
***** - BinaryFragger, on 08/25/2008, -0/+7Have you seen the new Tonka trucks? All plastic. :-(
I was born in '83, but a lot of my toys were from the 70s, hand-me-downs from my older brothers and cousins. Now my 3-year old nephew plays with them, as they're still in good shape.
I doubt a new toy tractor will still be in one piece 30 years from now. - Syric, on 08/25/2008, -0/+7Half of those weren't very big changes at all.
- lisaawesome, on 08/25/2008, -0/+7Man I loved Polly Pocket. I bet they made her bigger because of parents freaking out over the choking hazard. Back in my day when we walked 5 miles uphill to school we were smart enough not to stick Polly Pocket in our mouths! I really don't think that thought ever occurred to me. She was my friend not my food!
- inactive, on 08/23/2008, -0/+6Ahhhh Slinky
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6Punishment for your sins.
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6Oh those were awesome. We used to try and set those up to run down the stairs and jump over the couch. I always begged for the Criss Cross Crash set, never got it.
- tcpip4lyfe, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5That's what she said.
- ricoboy24, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5A hacky sack is a hacky sack... As long as you got the beans or rice or whatever have you in your sack, you can hack it.
- Galaxylander, on 08/25/2008, -2/+7Honestly, in my opinion some of them were for the better, but most of them are travesties.
My local Wal-Mart still only sells metal Slinkies, I've never seen that Strawberry Shortcake, they still sell the pocket Polly Pocket, Barbie is still all about the clothes....
I haven't even seen most of these transitions, the Tonka trucks here come in more than one variety, there are the plastic ones but we have the metal ones too, that's so younger kids don't hurt themselves on them, they sell the metal ones for the older kids. I've never seen that ugly My Little Pony either.
But over all, it was an alright article, maybe things are just different in Canada?
Edit: Oh yeah, and that Etch-a-Sketch? News to me... all I've ever seen is the classic one... - capillya, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5The cabbage patch dolls have always been creepy to me.
- gl77, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7fR8uC_p7k
***** thing would shatter into a million pieces if they tried that with today's Tonka truck. - lcarsdeveloper, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4Yes but then you might get splinters, and it could get infected, and you could have to go to the hospital, and your poor parents might have to sue the toy manufacturer because you got sick! Because we all know you don't get splinters in the real world, you wouldn't want to permanently upset your children by making them experience something they will NEVER go through in real life...
- DforSpiD, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4It's true... and it just feels like something's missing...
The other problem is that things cost in the millions now, you get 2 million for passing go - WoollyMittens, on 08/25/2008, -1/+5So everything was pussified for "safety". Did things really get safer, or should we feel insulted that corporate America assumes we're all retarded now?
On he other hand, maybe they're just maximizing profit, but swapping out durability for cheap chinese trash. - inactive, on 08/23/2008, -0/+4that is sad...
- peoplerstoopid, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3Then buy the classic monopoly not the updated or themed versions....this was a ***** stupid article, most of these "remakes" weren't remakes but themed versions. You can still get the original etch a sketch god forbid they make different themes for today's youth that has different influences. Hell 90 percent of these toys still have the original versions for sale.
Almost everything in this article was close to exactly the same as the original, this whiny ***** lets nit pick because this sticker used to be on the right side and now its in the middle attitude shows more about how this baby boomer can't handle adulthood than it does about corporate america being bad guys. - Halsfield, on 08/25/2008, -4/+7I got a whiny vibe from this article, your childhood toys were always better when you're remembering them because you were a kid when you were playing with them, you had a better imagination then, and you could have a lot of fun with a cardboard box. They still sell classic monopoly if you want to buy it, you can still find all the old toys on ebay for fairly cheap if you REALLY have to have the old toys for your kids. Most of these updated toys are still pretty fun though and this author is nitpicking some pretty tiny things on these toys for the most part. I think strawberry shortcake getting a thinner body was a little strange, but as long as its not an unhealthy image, who cares. Barbies take that to extremes and i dont think the thinness of barbie's is healthy for young girls, but shortcake wasnt bad at all, just a younger more modern version of her.
I was very surprised not to see transformers or gi joes on there. Gi joes are no longer selling the small 3in(or whatever height the small ones are) joes. Only the large barbie-doll size figures are going to be sold in the future. Transformers have become crappy shiny plastic toys instead of the decently solid ones in the past, and the characters have become lame(see the new animated series if you think im wrong, ooo construction bots, they have fake boston construction worker accents, and they can mix cement ! )
Most of the toys are still just as fun, and this article is really more about someone being elitist about their childhood. If you really want a good toy for a kid to make him think smarter, go for legos. they kick lincoln logs asses, they come in thousands of different settings, themes, and are completely interchangeable between the settings, knights with laser guns? done, police in space? done , let their imagination run wild and make whatever kind of toy they want to play with. Legos havent been changed since they were originally created. They've added bionicles(which i think are kinda lame), the bigger blocks for younger kids, etc, but you can still find the standard small blocks. - shipwreck58, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3The list is fairly spot on, though I will say that a lot of those toys dont work for me, never did, but I am a guy. But the horrible things they did to good toys because they wanted to make them safe. Yes I can see why they altered lawn darts. But slinky not metal is total ruin, and though not on the list, removing the mechanical aspects of erector sets, removing the metal and bolts and electrical stuff turning them into pre-fab kits was just sad. Spirograph ruined for sure. Oh and dont get me started on how they totally ***** ruined Tonka toys. Man you could beat the living ***** out of them, piling dirt on em, and falling on them and smashing them up, and they still worked. Now SNAP, in less than 30 seconds a tonka of today is in the garbage. Even a 40 year old tonka dump truck, rusted out and old is still sturdier than a new one.
- Galaxylander, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3We still have the Original Yo-Yo in Canada, don't know about the US, but it's the classic, wooden Yo-Yo that pisses everyone off when the end starts spinning because the string gets loose, haha. But yeah, with companies like Yo-Tech, they stuck a bunch of gears and crap into a plastic Yo-Yo with weights and a bunch of other stupid stuff that just break and make the Yo-Yo barely work...
- IG64, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3I used to play with the Littlest Pet Shop with my sister when I was 5 or so: http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/8987/lpsratsiv6 ...
When they redesigned them recently, something went terribly, horribly wrong: http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/986/littlestpet ... - ninjarabbits, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2one inch of hard plastic vs. three inches of some sort of pliable rubber
Girls around the world exclaim "Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!" - ricoboy24, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2They are great. The concept of the usual Up-Down motion of the yo-yo has evolved far beyond that. The new yo-yo's are sweat. So what if they are purple and green with a animated cartoon character on it, They spin.
- wraithscelus, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2I swear I can make ridiculous images on an etch-a-sketch. Some extreme boredom will bring out intense creativity and skill on those little red frames of aggrivation...
- Galaxylander, on 08/25/2008, -1/+3They're sweat? So, they sell Yo-Yo deodorant?
I must say, this is new. - lisaawesome, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2Oh wow I didn't realize they changed the cost of things too. Good thing I have a few copies of the old monopoly I can rely on.
- haikuFU, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2I've never seen that Strawberry Shortcake either, but man, I'd hit it. You know what goes well with Strawberry Shortcake? Creampies.
And before you make me have a seat over there, I'd like to remind you that little whore was born in 1977. - tidu, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2Lincoln Logs and Brio, an amazing combination
- vurdillac, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2I don't mind different different versions (like Monopoly or Etch-a-sketch) as long as the original is still available.
- Louis11, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2So . . . you didn't have a Tonka truck? Gay.
- Ragarnok, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2is she going through her teenage crisis ? :p
- crossmr, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2GI Joe? turning him back in to a doll was crap. The action figures of the 80s and 90s were the best and much more interesting to play with.
It's hard to make a base in a sandbox with small rocks for those giant things. - chaos7, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1pics are in the wrong place for each
- Halsfield, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1did i say the tiny ones were the originals? no , i knew the bigger ones were the older style, thats how all dolls were made back when they were created. What i was saying is that he was talking about toys that were worse now compared to back in the 80's and 90's. Not making the tiny figures anymore = worse.
Also @ barkingdog, i dont think they've stopped manufacturing or selling them just yet, but 3 people ive talked to at various toy stores have said they are going to stop making them very soon. Even after they stop manufacturing they will continue to sell their stock until they run out, which may take a while according to the people i talked to. - Louis11, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1And I still see the 'old' hacky sacks around . . .
- t4stringer, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1only one i didnt agree with was the hacky sack. footbag has evolved into a huge sport and certain things are needed to take things to another level i guess haha
- Pthalio, on 09/17/2008, -0/+1one with a sense of humor?
- peoplerstoopid, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1considering the original GI Joe's were actually "barbie doll sized" ie 12in high they are more going back to the classic instead of changing it.
