- Klinky, on 10/04/2009, -4/+106I found what she had to say interesting and informative. It's nice to hear from the person behind the pictures. Perhaps we have too many people on digg with ADHD?

- mlagana, on 10/04/2009, -3/+60listen to all you haters, where's your ted speech?? oh they haven't called you yet? for your groundbreaking discoveries increasing the efficiency of leveling in world of warcraft?
- clydebink, on 10/04/2009, -1/+56It's strange to me that so many people have negative things to say about this presentation.
I thought it was thought provoking. I recommend not getting locked in to minor complaints of grammar, tone, or even comparative banality so that you can get the most out of any information to which you are exposed.
But you know, that's just my recommendation. - ophello, on 10/04/2009, -40/+82This woman needs to talk less. She over-explains everything.
In other news, anyone wrongly convicted of a crime, and then set free, should get $10,000,000 for every year they were wrongly convicted. - fxu1989, on 10/04/2009, -1/+39No... her explanations added more meaning to the pictures.

A hi-res slide show of her work (she has some amazing shots which show a lot better as a pic than the video):

- ophello, on 10/04/2009, -2/+22Mass-produced. Yeah. Like on a conveyor belt, they're just churnin' 'em out.
...WTF are you talking about? TED talks happen as often as they ever did. The only thing that is mass-produced is your erroneous and uninformed opinion.
Oh...I get it. If it's on DIGG it suddenly becomes "mass-produced."
Sorry bud, hot dogs are mass-produced. TED talks are not. - AlexM451, on 10/04/2009, -2/+22I'd like to see a photograph of her secret sites.

- spacester, on 10/04/2009, -0/+5I am sure that Taryn Simon is grateful for the constructive criticism offered by the braintrust at Digg.
/s - krymson, on 10/04/2009, -0/+5she's probably doing more than you are.
- Menoats, on 10/04/2009, -1/+5Lisa Nova sure uses the word conext a lot.
All jokes aside I don't know so many of you are hating on her she takes amazing Photographs and does research on her pictures. - LemonChicken, on 10/04/2009, -1/+5Welcome to art.
- OverDriven, on 10/04/2009, -1/+5:D I thought that was pretty funny too. Looked like she pulled some graphics out of duke nukem.
- legom, on 10/04/2009, -2/+6I don't normally care about grammar, but I hate to see dosher199 being dugg down for being correct.
"monotone" is a noun.
monotonous (adj): having an unvarying tone or pitch.

To you perhaps but I found them so - BirdCatcher, on 10/04/2009, -1/+4sarcasm? if not. what the hell man.
- StickWST, on 10/04/2009, -14/+17That was a very interesting and well down presentation. Also, I'd hit that.
- OPR8R, on 10/03/2009, -22/+25Dugg for TED Talks...
- Sallad, on 10/04/2009, -0/+3yes
- BrewBeau, on 10/04/2009, -1/+4You need a history lesson if you think art has never shaped cultural trends. No, she herself is not saving the world. But if a lot of people are moved by what she reveals and form an opinion, then they are likely to influence people they know, and so on. Art also shows a mirror to society and can make things that once seemed normal now seem silly or wrong and then that self awareness can spur change.
- BirdCatcher, on 10/04/2009, -4/+7her photoshop skills are bogus also, especially the video game images imposed over the mock church.
- MrSumada, on 10/04/2009, -2/+5Agreed. Her devotion to these subject matters is commendable, but that devotion doesn't translate to an interesting photograph. Frankly, I doubt many of these pictures would stand on there own without the backstories.
- TonicTuna, on 10/04/2009, -0/+2Nothing I saw in the presentation qualified as "amazing"
- spacester, on 10/04/2009, -1/+3"I doubt many of these pictures would stand on there own without the backstories."
That's the freaking point! Not all photography is about eye-candy for shallow people.
And what value-added proposition do YOU bring to the table?
Also: there >> their - OverDriven, on 10/04/2009, -2/+4Dosher and logom are incorrect. Monotone can act as a noun OR adjective, and the original poster was correct in their use of the word.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/monotone
The word "monotonous" can also be used and is correct, but that's not the point. There was no reason to call out the original poster in the first place. Don't criticize other peoples' grammar when you need to work on your own. - UKsHaDoW, on 10/04/2009, -0/+2Come with us to reddit then. :)
- MrSumada, on 10/04/2009, -0/+2I'll have to disagree with your definition of photography, the images should stand on their own merit, not the history of their subjects. I think her work ties in more closely with photojournalism than art photography, yet she treats her work as art, and I wholeheartedly believe that art photography should not require a caption to be appreciated.
I don't quite understand what you mean by "value-added proposition", but I guess I'll assume you're asking whether or not I've made any contributions to photography. I haven't done anything significant, but I've been studying photography and discussing my own work among friends and professors for some time now, so I feel I have a somewhat-merited opinion.
My apologies for the spelling error, but then again it's a comments section not a dissertation. - desertDenizen, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1@ophello: You do realize that TED is a speaking event, right?
Cuz if you thought it was a coffee table book or something, I'd totally agree with you. - legom, on 10/04/2009, -0/+1I accept your explanation, OverDriven. The dictionary I used (merriam-webster.com) to look up the definition "monotone" didn't have it as an adjective.
- ophello, on 10/04/2009, -0/+1No...it isnt intellectualism when you drone on about some complex state of emotion that I am "supposed" to feel when looking at the images, juxtaposed with text. Let me read the text, look at the image, and draw my own conclusions.
- MelvinSchlubman, on 10/05/2009, -0/+1I thought you'd get dugg-down more for "OLD!!!" than for the comparatively more neutral "on digg before".
Current score:
"on digg before": -3 (non-self votes)
"OLD!!!": no non-self votes, despite both comments being > 7hrs old - inactive, on 10/04/2009, -1/+2"To you perhaps but I found them so"
Fair enough. Not every artist will appeal to every person and this art does not appeal to me, obviously. I do try to be open minded but I found the pictures quite uninspiring. Cheers - samurimaster, on 10/04/2009, -0/+1The mean something to me
- MelvinSchlubman, on 10/05/2009, -0/+1> I have ADHD, I don't know if that factored in to this but; She seemed to just give an extreme constant barrage of information ...
> ... extrapolation on every detail ...
I think it did factor in (but, see below for another opinion on that). I've watched plenty of TED videos, and this did not seem out of character for TED. Actually, I thought she underdid it somewhat. She under-explained some of the wrongly-convicted cases. Don't just say his name, what he was convicted of and how long he served. Also say something about how he was done wrong.
One she gave some detail on: cops substituting the 4yo pic. Fine, but I want 1 more sentence on what the consequences of that were to those cops. I know TED talks are often ~18 min, but only about 1 minute more would have filled these basic gaps. She ended up at 17:32, and it's not at all rare to go a few mins over 18.
> I think I may have enjoyed the pictures on their own ...
Despite others' opinions here that the pics were weak, I thought they did well at fulfilling their photojournalistic purpose: to humanize their subjects and to portray them sympathetically. The core of the work is the stories being told. The pics have primarily a supporting role to that.
> Ah well, I haven't heard a completely boring TED talk yet.
Here, I was surprised that you'd seen other TED talks and still had the opinion about too much detail. That makes me wonder if, instead of ADHD, our different opinions are due to different levels of interest in the subject matter of this one. - dosher199, on 10/04/2009, -0/+1Ah, sorry. Guess you learn something new every day.
- Zoshchenko, on 10/04/2009, -0/+1And by way of comparison, Duke, what have you accomplished that comes even remotely close to the talented Ms. Simon?
- Menoats, on 10/14/2009, -0/+1Well that is your opinion and you have a right to it...but I gotta disagree the toxic barrels pictures was pretty genius imo.
- Canadianpj, on 10/04/2009, -0/+1Digg is not for intelligent comments its for making fun of things while hiding behind your computer.
- bobmckenzie, on 10/04/2009, -0/+1Platypus I'd like to *****?
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=pil ... - TheGreger, on 10/04/2009, -0/+1That was just an honest question... not me saying, "OLD!!!11"
- lrthomp, on 10/11/2009, -0/+1Wish this kind of vid. came up more on Digg instead of "10 Most Annoying Lists of Whatever" and the latest techno. products.
- desertDenizen, on 10/04/2009, -1/+2Don't comment on intellectualism in the same sentence that you mistake "their" and "there."
