- redwolfwalker, on 07/13/2009, -1/+12FTA: "Texas..Everything about the State Fair of Texas is oversized, from its 52-foot iconic cowboy, “Big Tex,” welcoming visitors with a familiar “Howdy, folks” to its sky-high Ferris wheel, one of the tallest in North America. The fair, at 24 days, is also the longest one in the country. And you may need that time to experience it all. The fair is home to the great Red River Rivalry—the Texas versus Oklahoma University college football game—a 300,000-square-foot auto show with a history dating back more than 100 years and all the corn dogs you can eat." ...Those of you have been to this one know, I am sure many of you have had some fun and interesting foods at your State Fairs
- InfinitySnatch, on 07/14/2009, -0/+7Woooo, Indiana! We've got state fairs and that's it folks. But hey, if you want to get to Michigan you'll probably have to go through us first.
- Blinker1315, on 07/13/2009, -2/+8Don't know about you, Red, but I've had my fill of state fairs. We've been going to Maryland's for the past six years or so, and every year it's the same: the same carneys, the same vendors, the same games of chance where you spend 10 bucks to win a stuffed animal that was made for 18 cents in China. I like the smaller neighborhood fairs, the ones that are more homemade and feature local restaurants, musicians and performers.
- redwolfwalker, on 07/13/2009, -1/+6Blinker, maybe you should have skipped a few years... it's been about 20 years since I have been to a State Fair... have been to several smaller County Fairs recently, and yes it is possible to have a more small family feeling about those
- iheartwurdz, on 07/13/2009, -1/+5i didn't realize the Saturday Evening Post was still culturally relevant, but I liked this article a lot
- crossmr, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4"Ever since a New England farmer by the name of Elkanah Watson organized an exhibition of sheep under an elm tree in Pittsfield, Massachusetts" I can see how that'd catch on..
- Smyley, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4The county fair I go to every year is a wave of nostalgia for me everytime I go. I waste money on overpriced food, useless trinkets, and impossible games. But I always go with my best friends, and that makes it all worth it.
- gunshotglitter, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4Dug for an annual endless day of nausea inducing midway rides as a teen, the rodeo, the cars, seeing the Dixie Chicks (before they were famous) and Willie Nelson, fireworks or it's eventual substitute the more economical laser show, seeing "Miracle Boy" Dave Mirra amaze in the bike shows (before he was famous), and last but not least beer, Fletcher's Corny Dogs, and FRIED OREOS!
I LOVE IT! Texas State Fair FTW! - spookyttws, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3Why do people waste so much butter making sculptures of cows out of it? Iowa, if you have that much excess butter you can send it my way!
- hoodedrobin, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2Pre - Megans Law
- walruspanzer, on 07/14/2009, -1/+3Yeah, the socioeconomic divide is quite clear at any state fair. But funnel cakes are awesome!
- RhymeThyme, on 07/14/2009, -2/+4I didn't realize that Cinnamon and Toast were still cultural elephants, but I like them better than snot
- JanSimpson, on 07/13/2009, -3/+4Agreed - why in the world would any Fair be the "release of stress" or make our troubles go away for a day - sorry the fairs or no more than a carnival and they have very dangerous people attending - Big Tex is a draw - but once you have seen him - it is just the crazies there - the crappy food that cost too much - better to stay at home and grill with friends -
- Equinamin, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1New York State Fair' rocks!
- jbmcb, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1When all there is are sheep and large fields containing sheep, sheep become rather interesting.
- TriNiiTy, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Nice. But no nothing that serious.
- chuckDontSurf, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1This was before TV and the internet.
- hoodedrobin, on 07/14/2009, -1/+1Yeah I hate Fair's... I had the joy of taking my nieces and nephew...
Never again. - jaedavid, on 07/14/2009, -0/+0Train collision exhibits? What ever happened to those?!? http://www.saturdayeveningpost.com/2009/06/29/life ...
- earther, on 07/14/2009, -2/+1If you want fairs, go here:
