- ssquared22, on 04/11/2009, -1/+19RIP Starlog :(
- inactive, on 09/13/2009, -1/+19Print in general is dying.
- mklopez, on 04/11/2009, -0/+16I remember this was the first, sometimes the only magazine that I looked for, the few times I visited USA as a kid.
Truly a sad moment for geeks and nerds everywhere :( - michaelpinto, on 04/12/2009, -0/+12To me their high point was the late 70s to the mid 80s which mirrors a golden age of science fiction film and television. They also did some great spin off mags that never quite made it like Comics Scene and my favorite Future Life magazine. Sadly their sister publication Fangoria did a bit too well, and at the end of the day Entertainment Weekly was just faster than they were. But once upon a time they were the best in the biz...
- michaelpinto, on 04/12/2009, -0/+6Correct my first thought was how hard I am as a techie on folks who love newspapers - and yet when it comes to my nerd paper I get very sentimental. Although I was feeling that same way when InfoWorld did the same thing too...
- bigteebo, on 04/12/2009, -0/+4To think I bought some old issues of Dragon today.
- ibeetle, on 04/12/2009, -0/+4Article is complete *****. Starlog is not going anywhere. Read the real story at... oh... wait for at... here it is. Starlog's own website.
The site clearly states they are temporarily halting, but not terminating the print edition. Starlog goes on to say they are relaunching the website and plan on, eventually going completely digital.
"...at this time that we announce the temporary cessation of the current run of STARLOG as a print magazine. ...major revamp and will be temporarily discontinuing publication while the model and redesign of the magazine are contemplated and executed..." and "The last print issue available for the time being is #374, while issue #375 will be available exclusively as a digital edition..."
Wow... nowhere in there does it say they are shuttering their door and/or so long and thanks for all the fish. In fact just the opposite they use the word temporary (or it's meaning) twice.
Sounds like a good move. All their fans are wired to the net so they feel like they need to embrace it as well. More print media would fair far better if they took a page from Starlogs plan book and realized the internet and digital media is not the enemy. - Janinco, on 04/12/2009, -1/+4Sad news...
- jericko, on 04/12/2009, -0/+3That's too bad, in the mid-80s, it was how I got all my Doctor Who news.
- anubis2night, on 04/12/2009, -0/+2Dugg for bringing back old memories, it sad to see things go the way of the dinosaur. I imagine someday soon we will tell our kids about binded paper products that had articles and ad's in them, and that way back in our day they cost like 5$ which was a lot back then
- wallyhartshorn, on 04/12/2009, -0/+2On the one hand, I still have my copy of their first issue. Great cover!
On the other hand, I must admit that I haven't bought an issue in many years. :-(
Still, I'm sad to see it go. It's kind of like learning that the house you grew up in has been torn down. True, you no longer live there, but there's a part of you that expects that things from your past should never disappear. - jakdracula, on 04/13/2009, -0/+2I have the first 3 issues in mint condition. I bought them way back when, read 'em, and put them in their little plastic bags, where they remain till this day.
- AmusedToDeath, on 04/12/2009, -0/+2You can watch the whole miniseries and short-lived TV series on youtube. It was quite a blast from the past for me as well. Check it out...

Series:
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=F7A38DF778 ... - bthree78, on 04/12/2009, -0/+1Starlog brought me, as a child, into the movie magic World of the early 80's Sci-Fi with articles on all the big ones. ET, Jedi, V, Trek, Terminator, Ghostbusters, Back To The Future.
Happy memories. . . - 1ofMany, on 04/12/2009, -0/+1This is good news, but scary nonetheless. When anything needs to cease for any length of time it tends to go on longer than planned until the return is just a distance memory.
I wish them well. I can easily recall buying the first issue and falling in love with Starlog when I was in high school.
Although I don't buy magazines anymore, I will certainly bookmark their website to check things out. Seeing that first issue cover has really brought back some memories... - echothirteen, on 04/12/2009, -0/+1This is truly sad. When I was a kid I ordered a Star Trek Enterprise model from them in the mid 80's. Hope they stay online.
- mpastrana, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1Not concerned at all, if anything theres 300+ starlogs scattered through the internet via blogs, forums and yes, on digg. The content is there, just its no longer printed on paper.
- apothekari, on 04/12/2009, -0/+1I gave you a thumbs up anyway but, Fangoria is a great magazine. Now we can split hairs over Gorezone but Fango was THE place to get horror/suspense film info.
Starlog and Famous Monsters RIP - evanman69, on 04/12/2009, -0/+1Sad.
Starlog,Fangoria,Wizard,Comics Scene and Hero was the only magazines that kept me in the magazine section at my Kroger when I was little.
I couldn't afford it at the time, due to the high cover price and I was from a poor family.
Bur I did buy some back issues of Punisher Magazine the other day..live my old memories. - knute5, on 06/17/2009, -0/+1What made you love Starlog back then and what changed after you "grew up" ... and if you or it didn't change, then where do you go now to get that same fix?
- ultimate_ed, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1Which is, ultimately, why Starlog is leaving the print world. Honestly, I didn't even realize they were still around. I carried a subscription for several years back in the 80's.
- Remelox, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1Thanks for reminding me of my hate for Wizards of the Coast. Dragon was doing well enough under Paizo until Wizards killed it. I should not have to get online to read my magazine. I shouldn't have to pay the same amount for their website, or more, than I paid for the paper mailed to me. If they were to lower the price and Sony came out with a good color Reader, then I might consider it. But after their cease and desist to all comapnies selling PDFs of out of print D&D material, I'm inclined never to pay them for anything again.
Also 4th Edition partially sucks... - rosshershey, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1Wow, bummer.
- poplopez, on 04/12/2009, -0/+1amen
- elwoodblues, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1I have the first 150+ in mint condition :-)
Not sure what they're worth, but it's gotta be more than my stocks. - echothirteen, on 04/12/2009, -0/+0I dugg your comment because I had forgotten all about V!
- AlterLite, on 04/12/2009, -7/+0Nerd!
- Thumper13, on 04/12/2009, -10/+1Waste of paper when it can be done online cheaper. It's core audience is computer savvy. Should have done a switch to online years ago to save themselves money.
