- doublehead, on 01/20/2008, -0/+8Everybody always forgets about Qlink. I was an avid subscriber back when the Commodore 64 was all the rage. Qlink was actually AOL in its early years :)
- silpol, on 01/20/2008, -2/+8while I don't necessarily agree with opinion that Wordpress.com has good future, rest is very to-the-point
- calon9, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3Ahh, the good old days of FidoNet BBSs, where my entire online world consisted of the beeps and hisses of a 300 baud dial-up connection, quickly reading 20 new posts from friends I had never met in person, thinking up a few witty posts on the topics of the day, posting them then quickly logging off before my mom picked up the phone and knocked me offline -- even after telling her hundreds of times to yell up to my room and ask me if I was online before picking up the phone. Doom II multiplayer over dwango was still a few years into my future, and I couldn't imagine the online world could get any better. Yes, I never had a knack for foresight.
- matu666, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3good read and a history lesson all in one
I think in the long run social networks will die a horrible death, all things reach a peak and then have to come crashing down
it is natural - cuoops, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3What about newsgroups?.....back in the day.
- Sornos, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3Somewhat off topic, but in 30 years how will we refer to the 2000-2010 period?
- MadScientist440, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2And, with any hope, it will Prevent the Gross misuse of Capital Letters in typed communiCation.

- nnny, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2No mention of Google Profiles, Web 2.0 or even Web 3.0

- tingrin87, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2no mention of IRC??
- paul9290, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2Social networks are getting crazy like http://dogster.com (share pics of your dogs with others ) and then the one where your friends' audio messages is the sound of ur alarm clock buzzer ( i think its sleep.fm or http://sleepfm.com ) ... What the ?
- fastupfront, on 01/22/2008, -0/+2It is still pretty inspiring to me how quickly a lot of these businesses succeeded. I wrote recently on my blog about how all big businesses started small - it gives me some affirmation of the American Dream.
- soapbeard, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2Hmm... This is suspiciously similar to Stephen Fry's column in the Guardian last week, "Social networking through the ages", except not as eloquent:
http://stephenfry.com/blog/?p=34 - inactive, on 08/11/2008, -0/+2Heh, Geocities and Friendster, those were the days...
- darklights, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1In the UK they are often referred to as the naughties (as in nineties is to ninety, naughties is to naught). Its not official or anything, it could just be tv I heard it on.
- FKnight, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1QuantumLink ruled. My stepdad and I used to download tons of freeware/shareware from there, as well as songs for "SIDplayer". Good times :D
QLink *actually* goes even further back to PlayNET. - derekbender, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Social networks are here to stay, like it or not, but myspace and facebook are just trends. The real networks that will last are targeted at niche markets and organizations that can greatly take advantage of everything social networks can offer. The only good mass market social network I see today that might last is Virb.com.
- lauramariel, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1anyone remember bolt? I think they're still around.
Edit:

Nope, guess not... but they just shut down last year.. - lcarsdeveloper, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Wow, if you're going to post insightful comments like that then I'll have to check out your blog! Seriously, you don't need to write a title for your comment. "The coming of broadband"? What are you still on dialup or something? Oooohh you're such a "propfessional blogger". And each of those 3 sections will have different people in them. "Visual and group chat with videoconferencing"? So the future of social networking is....video chatrooms?
And to cap it all off you spam your lame blog. **applauds very slowly** - inactive, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Good read. I think social networking will continue to evolve. Anyone interested in investing join us at EquityGroups.com
- spankaccount, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Anyone here in California remember Baud Town?
- orion2013, on 01/20/2008, -1/+12000's , 2010's - deosnt everyone know this>??
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/21st_century - CaptainChunk, on 09/19/2008, -0/+0I like it. Good job.
- MadScientist440, on 01/20/2008, -0/+0I think the period would be from 2000-2009. They have names for "periods" that last ten years. Decades. It would end Dec. 31, 2009, and it would probably be called "the 2000's", but not as casually as the other decades, since to be precise you would have to specify "the first decade of the 2000's" or something like that.

- squirlyblack, on 08/02/2008, -0/+0Since web 1.0 was mentioned, i feel that web 2.0 (sites like wikipedia) should also be mentioned because of the huge impact it has on people's lifes (wikipedia has been more of a teacher to me than some of my teachers in school). and let's not forget games like Second Life, which are now a real life for some filled with shops, schools and dating places. https://cisco.hosted.jivesoftware.com/index.jspa?c ...
- euping, on 01/20/2008, -5/+5Future of Social Networking.
Well I think with coming of broadband it will turn into a Digital Id for everyone, with Personal, Propfessional and Social sections with different people in Each of them.
Also it will include visual and group chat and Videoconferencing capability.
