- d2002, on 11/22/2008, -74/+1406***** you bigots. That is not my America.
- TPorter72, on 11/22/2008, -22/+864"She said, 'Sir, you have to take your turban off. This is the United States'" - wow
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -22/+841*checks list* ...you can wear a beer hat, cowboy hat, underwear and lampshades on your head, yeah I don't see turbans here buddy, please remove it.
/sarc - familynight, on 11/22/2008, -9/+673That guy has a kickass 'stache.
- empressofmetal, on 11/22/2008, -13/+554I don't understand America's preoccupation with removing hats inside. What is the big friggin deal? And obviously if someone is wearing a turban, you can deduce that it's a religious thing. No one is going to see a man in a turban and think "Why didn't he remove his "HAT"?" This is insane. I'm embarrassed that Americans can be this ignorant.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -4/+545The guy was trying to make a donation? Wow, way to put him in his place. She must be proud.
- okyourturn, on 11/22/2008, -10/+471"Weeks said the mission would welcome Khera's donation if he mailed it or had his wife bring it in."
what a *****. - FoxtrotYankee, on 11/22/2008, -11/+330Douchebags. If they came to a building that barred people wearing icons hanging from necklaces, they'd be FREAKING OUT that they were being oppressed because they couldn't prominently show off their miniature execution devices on a chain.
It's similar to the way they've preached hate against gays for decades and now that gay people are (rightly) pissed about Prop 8 in California and speaking up about it, the faitheads are screaming about how they're "under attack". - doiveo, on 11/22/2008, -6/+276This is a clash of cultures. The very same thing occurred here is Canada when a Sikh vet was denied access to the Legion. The members of the legion believed very strongly that removal of head dress was a sign of respect. Sikhs wear turbans to show a commitment to faith. Both valid but completely incompatible.
This particular case however shows a HUGE lack of tolerance.
On a different note. The sentence "Followers of Sikhism do not cut their hair, and men commonly wear long beards and turbans." is linked to the mission site. that must have been a mistake. - dlan4327, on 11/22/2008, -0/+237You should see my house "Sir, this is Sydney, you have to take your pants off."
- Sublex, on 11/22/2008, -2/+226"Sir, this sentence is contradictory and I obviously have no education."
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -3/+196Wow. This would be ridiculous in any context, but the fact that someone is REFUSING to take MONEY from this man.. FOR CHARITY just makes this whole thing... wait.. [checks to see if it's the onion] RETARDED.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -24/+186Sorry but it is your America, the sooner you accept that fact the sooner you can start dealing with it.
Like an open wound, bigotry in America, wont ever heal unless tended too. Common sense. - t4m5t3r, on 11/22/2008, -8/+169wow, now thats an incredible example of ignorance, thats just mind blowing!!
The USA, freedom of religion, as long as its the same as ours!!
also, a turban is not a hat, the same way a veil that a muslim woman would wear is not a "ninja mask", the stupidity of some people baffles me sometimes!! - hooah212002, on 11/22/2008, -5/+159...and you should be ashamed for wasting prescious O2.
- martoq, on 11/22/2008, -1/+132Sadly, he probably knows more about the United States, it's laws and its freedoms than she does.
- DirtyCash, on 11/22/2008, -4/+123Yeah if she would have left the United States part out it would have been acceptable. Their policy forbids hats to some degree so I give them that. But the "This is the United States" part is just extra inflammatory crap.
- cloudberries, on 11/22/2008, -0/+102Here, I think you dropped this...
*hands over white pillowcase* - kelmaster1, on 11/22/2008, -1/+101Ya, and this guy isn't even Christian.... He makes charitable donations to people who need it, not some self-centered way to make them feel better about being Christian or getting their way to heaven.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -2/+100Sir, you have to stop asking people to take their Turbans off. This is America.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -4/+99Hopefully the lesson he'll take away from all of this is never to donate a goddamn cent to any religious charity.
- mrseptic, on 11/22/2008, -1/+94Yes, the mass immigration of Europeans to the North American continent destroyed the Native American culture.
- doiveo, on 11/22/2008, -13/+91You know what ... this hat removing thing is hypocritical *****.
Looking back, it was customary for women to leave their hats on indoors (in church) because they were typically difficult to remove. So if women get a pass simply because they have a few bobby pins and ribbons, surely a religious custom can be given a reprieve. The Jews are allowed their yarmulkes so the president exists.
I'm all for having manners and civility but it seems to me that has been lost in trying to uphold this custom. - AmandaQ, on 11/22/2008, -6/+82Which is fine. He can also financially support another organization with is hard earned American dollars.
- DouglasQ, on 11/22/2008, -19/+95Hehehe, the constant comedy of religion.
- joker2459, on 11/22/2008, -4/+80and you should be ashamed to show yourself in public
go ***** yourself if you cant respect others beliefs. - anagoge, on 11/22/2008, -6/+81"I don't understand America's preoccupation with removing hats inside."
Being devil's advocate here, I think in many cultures, removing a hat is a sign of respect for whichever building you happen to be in at the time. In a similar way, many people would find it quite rude to keep a pair of sunglasses on while you're talking to them. It creates barriers between two people. - pensivewombat, on 11/22/2008, -1/+75It was an undercover mission
- 0Xonox0, on 11/22/2008, -0/+70Sir, you have to take that Freedom off. This is America.
- TheSkunkMonkey, on 11/22/2008, -2/+72Dugg for "miniature execution devices on a chain"
I always thought it odd people would wear a dead guy around their neck. - inactive, on 11/22/2008, -4/+73http://www.umrr.org/ go to the contact page and send them email. Do NOT be gentle.
- yosserhughes, on 11/22/2008, -1/+66If you're supposed to remove your hat in the Lords House, how come the Pope gets to keep his on?
- sodade, on 11/22/2008, -0/+63"A lot of Christians wear crosses around their necks. You think when Jesus comes back he ever wants to see a ***** cross again? It's like going up to Jackie Onassis wearing a rifle pendant."
BH - DigDugDigger, on 11/22/2008, -0/+62Exactly. Sometimes I think that natural born citizens should be required to take the citizenship test as well.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -1/+57For all those who think that he should have taken his turban off, let me tell you that it is completely impractical. Apart from obvious religious reasons, most people dont understand that the turban you see keeps the hair in a very compact bundle. Sikhs NEVER ever cut their hair. If a Sikh has to take his turban off and put it back on, I would think it would take him about 1.5 hours.
Also, if he did take it off, people would get freaked by the long hair in males(longer that most women; >3/4 meter) as its not a concept of western society. Its better to keep the turban on. - kevinmoore, on 06/13/2009, -0/+56> The Jews are allowed their yarmulkes so the president exists.
Obama wouldn't exist without yarmulkes?
Man, the Jews control *everything*. - sparsely, on 11/22/2008, -1/+56Buildings don't care if you give them respect.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -3/+58They tend to wear an asshat down thems parts.
- ScottyAnimal, on 11/22/2008, -0/+54He should mail it in a turban.
- harrisfb, on 11/22/2008, -0/+54Director,
Your organization's intolerance has made me embarrassed to be an American and a resident of North Carolina. You should be ashamed of yourselves for turning away a man with different beliefs, who was coming to your organization to help others who are less fortunate. I know this was not your fault but the fault of some ignorant lady, who is probably a volunteer. However it is your responsibility to make sure the people working or volunteering for you are trained properly, and don't come with in inches of committing hate crimes while working. How about taking some time with your congregation to learn about other cultures besides your own?
I simply do not have words strong enough to convey my disgust with this situation, so I will end this here. - dirigibleduck, on 11/22/2008, -0/+52And tell me, what exactly is "American" culture other than a mishmash of immigrants' traditions? How can you say that it hasn't changed over time as different immigrant groups came here, and that it shouldn't be allowed to continue changing?
- AManWithNoName, on 11/22/2008, -0/+50That's the American way: "Give us your money, but if you look a little different, please do it discreetly so as not to upset our fragile world views."
- TotalHalibut, on 11/22/2008, -0/+49Sihkism and Islam are completely different things. You're yet another example of American xenophobia and ignorance.
So some of the middle-eastern countries aren't big on pluralism. Does that mean we should throw ours out the window too? It's called holding the moral highground, not using it to spit on every else from above. - mikelieman, on 11/22/2008, -1/+50There are PLENTY of religions where keeping ones' head covered is a sign of your respect to the Almighty.
- yuanzhoulu, on 11/22/2008, -1/+49okay, that is fine. but then they should say "please remove your hat because of our beliefs", not because of "this is america"
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -3/+50No, that's REAL America.
- linagee, on 11/22/2008, -0/+46What sort of a mission? :-)
- TotalHalibut, on 11/22/2008, -2/+45Haha, this is good, an American is claiming to have a culture.
- giveer, on 11/22/2008, -1/+44I'm dwelling off the article's topic, but as someone who has lived in Canada and California, I'm shocked that Americans DON'T take their shoes off after they enter house. It simply strikes me as rude not to mention pretty messy and over time, wildly damaging to flooring. An upside being that upon returning to the States, the host of whatever house I'm staying at thinks I'm the most respectful angel just by taking my shoes off. "What are you doing?" "Uhhh.. taking my shoes off" "Seriously? why?" "Well, because this is your home." "Wow, umm, thanks."
- damobun, on 11/22/2008, -0/+42wow, thats deep. and stoopid.
