- bixby1, on 10/11/2008, -2/+5975% of the qualified SAG members must authorize this. As a SAG member, I don't know many of my friends who will be voting to strike in this economic climate. It's just not going to happen.
- badwithcomputer, on 10/11/2008, -4/+56ugh...will this screw up another season of my favorite tv shows?
- GregIsLegend, on 10/11/2008, -10/+56F.A.G.
- tacochampion, on 10/11/2008, -5/+44This would be great.
There are millions of actors ready to take their places.
I'd be happy to not see the same idiots in every movie. - zelig, on 10/12/2008, -3/+32SAG needs to pick their battles. This is not a great time for a strike.
- Amadeus2490, on 10/12/2008, -1/+25People like Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, etc are the top 0.05% of actors. Not everyone makes as much as they do. Most actors make less than $5000 per year off of acting alone, and have to have another job just to pay their bills.
- bennny, on 10/11/2008, -4/+28Let them go on strike as prices go up the quality of the movies go down
they are not worth the money - Jimbozu, on 10/11/2008, -1/+21UGH! please no... I don't want to think about what its going to be like trying to find a job if there aren't any movies being filmed (I'm a theatre/entertainment craftsperson) with the economy in the *****. The writers strike was bad enough, and that happened while the economy was strong.
- Zalyster, on 10/12/2008, -4/+23Seriously, I can see the writers wanting more money, but the actors? What with Depp getting $56 million upfront for a Disney film nobody wants, I can't see how hard it is for these people to have enough to live by.
- oneredeye, on 10/12/2008, -1/+19Cool! If they strike we'll get another season or two of great shows like American Gladiators! I love that show!
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -6/+23Please say it's so, Joe!
The drivel produced now-a-days isn't worth the money. - antoniuk, on 10/12/2008, -5/+20Do you not realize that we the entertainment viewing public are just about sick and tired of your industry's games?
Yes I sympathize with you for wanting to strike but realize that you risk devastating an already fragile business.
Is no work better than lousy work? Until you and those who manage you fix this, I will misbehave and do everything in my power to exploit and steal your hard work without you seeing one red cent.
I do this because of the sheer volume of crap spewed out form studios and the actors who perpetrate said crap. I also do this because of the over blown income actors get in addition to the ridiculous charges for entertainment across the spectrum.
I pirate so you don't get a new sports car and Armani suit and have to learn to act and not just bumble ***** through life on a free ride.
There I have said my piece and wish you luck in your negotiations. I only hope you realize the consequences of your actions. - koolmoecraig, on 10/12/2008, -1/+15This is the mindset that the producers count on.
What you fail to realize is that 99% of SAG actors earn a middle-class wage. The 1% that you are speaking of(sports cars/ Armani suits) are the famous actors that DON'T EVEN WORK UNDER THE TYPICAL SAG CONTRACT. They get big money deals. They are paid more as producers than actors.
This strike is mainly about the producers trying to screw working class actors out of residuals and being paid for content posted on the Internet.
Non-famous actors like myself depend on residuals which we make when a show is in rerun and from DVD sales. On the average SAG covered TV show, I basically get paid about $100 every time the show airs on television(there are a few variables here, depending on the size of the role etc) and literally pennies for DVD sales. The pay rate for residuals was established back in the early 80's before the Internet and before even VHS sales, let alone DVD's! Has the cost of living gone up a tiny bit since then? Uhhhhhh yeah.
It comes down to this:
If a network can stream a show on line and sell advertising for it, why shouldn't I be paid for that? If it was on TV I would be paid.
If they can sell episodes on itunes, why shouldn't I be paid for that? When someone buys a DVD of a show or movie I get paid.
We aren't asking for more money from the viewers. We are asking the producers to share a tiny bit more of their profits. This is very similar to how the record labels screw over artists with low royalties. Whose side are you on there? - AManWithNoName, on 10/12/2008, -4/+15Please, for the love of god, at least wait until Pushing Daisies has all the episodes this season filmed.
- Grumps, on 10/12/2008, -5/+16Doing it during the depression? Are we really killing the country in every way possible?
- wily6, on 10/12/2008, -1/+11I'm Spartacus!
- scottsutherland, on 10/12/2008, -2/+10"Matt..Damon.."
- carpeclunes, on 10/12/2008, -2/+10Heroes ***** itself up.
- wdr1, on 10/12/2008, -1/+9No, that's not how hollywood works.
Anyone -- director, studio, stuntman and so on -- working w/ non-SAG actors will face post-strike consequences. It's not much of a secret & everyone knows it. So they'll respect the strike line.
And what studio wants to risk pissing off mega-star X such that only work the other studio who did respect the strike?
No, just like the folly of the Screenwriter strike, there will be wide spread consequences & those who *could* do a great job & fill the void will be held back.
*sigh* - Sayterra, on 10/12/2008, -0/+8Except that this is the Screen Actors Guild, not the Writers...
- koolmoecraig, on 10/12/2008, -4/+11I too am a SAG member and I will be voting to authorize the strike. The greedy producers are sure happy that people like you and your friends will be voting against it.
- oda1, on 10/12/2008, -1/+7Heroes is crap this season. Level 5 baddy's are actually pussy's with ***** powers. Mohinder's storyline is ridiculous. The future branches out in so many different outcomes that even the writers have no idea wtf is going on (btw, how come in all those future, it still hasn't affected the 'present')
and claire sucks as a 'bad girl' they just dyed her hair and got the actress to look constipated. And the biggest mistake of all? bringing back that Jesse character.
Prison break? Don't get me started, I'll just say -- they'll save some face if they actually finish in 11 episodes. - raydeen, on 10/12/2008, -3/+9Just replace them all with CGI already. We have the technology. Or just use Gary's Mod. Most of the stuff created with that is as entertaining if not more so than most of the crap that gets on tv.
- visarya, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5get ready for 11 episodes of heroes and prison break
- Khast, on 10/12/2008, -3/+8I haven't watched a movie, or TV show in a long time, feel free to strike, it won't affect me. Now if they actually started to produce good movies/TV shows....maybe I would watch, so maybe the strike shouldn't be for better pay...it should be to get better scripts made so you still have a job.
As a note, there was a few good movies this last year. I just need to get more time to watch them. - IgorUnchained, on 10/12/2008, -1/+6Reagan stopped a SAG strike when he was president of the group. He went from B list actor to
being qualified and bankrolled to be governor/president not long after.
Hopefully we can avoid a strike AND another member of the
"Hollywood Elite" in the White House. - flyingclutchman, on 10/12/2008, -2/+7All I have to say is if they ***** up this season of heroes, I will go on a ***** rampage.
- Zalyster, on 10/12/2008, -1/+6And Dancing With the Guards...*shudder*
- EthosProduction, on 10/12/2008, -2/+7As Amadeus said above, those A list actors you see in movies at the theaters will hardly be the ones affected by a strike vs. no strike. It would primarily impact local actors trying to get their break in the industry, who have to take on 2 part time jobs just to pay the rent, in hopes of getting their big break one day.
But, striking in this current economic state? Not sure if that's a smart choice... who knows. - enzobot24, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4antoniuk,
You're a fool - you're stealing content because it's crappy? Why not just pay for the good stuff? Dexter, The Office, South Park, and many other fantastic shows.... The Dark Knight, No Country for Old Men, Iron Man - I can name a ton of good content with fine actors associated.
People keep on saying "Movies and TV shows used to be better - there's so much ***** out there!" *****, there will always be bad content out there...
You're just lazy - and you'd be stealing stuff regardless. - santaliqueur, on 10/12/2008, -2/+6I can't remember the last time I saw a movie in the theater, and this isn't helping them any.
- jbmcb, on 10/12/2008, -1/+5I see bad production, writing, directing AND acting. There's enough crappiness to go around.
- Frixionburne, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4No Problems the way I see it... Top Gear has nothing to do with the screen actors guild.
- koolmoecraig, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4You really think that any of the big time actors want a strike??? HELL NO. They get the million dollar contracts that are in no way related to the SAG scale contracts. They will personally lose more in lost production than anyone. Thing is the money will still be there for them when the strike is over and they have enough money to weather just about any strike.
This isn't about the wealthy actors. - dsmx, on 10/12/2008, -1/+5that's the FAG way.
- Hosalabad, on 10/11/2008, -3/+7Let them. If they don't think they are making the money they want, they can strike or they can go try to find that money somewhere else.
I'm pro strike. Sports, factories, Entertainment, I don't care. You go ahead and strike because it won't to anything to affect me.
Good luck with your strike, enjoy the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. - oblique63, on 10/12/2008, -3/+6I lol @ tv...
- psion01, on 10/12/2008, -1/+4Thank God the new 'Star Trek" movie is practically finished.
- Sayterra, on 10/12/2008, -0/+3I'm diggin you and bixby1 up because it's good to hear voices against it. Unfortunately, just the mention of strike at the studio I work with has caused delays in productions before :/ I hope this wont be the case this time around.
- Wisgary, on 10/12/2008, -0/+324 will be pushed back yet another year.
- inactive, on 10/12/2008, -0/+3Oh noooo! The screen actors guild will unite!
- Intercon, on 10/12/2008, -1/+4Wow, are all the TV-watching retards commenting here? This strike will have a much farther reach than any of you people seem to realize. All the carpenters, scenic painters, electricians, drivers, caterers, and assistants that hold the entire industry together will be OUT OF WORK, while SAG strikes. That's commercials, videos, films, and television production.
As these people scramble for other employment, the employment opportunites in the creative sector of the fashion and advertising worlds will dwindle, as will non-union construction jobs on both coasts, as these technical people spread out looking for ways to feed their families.
You might think George Clooney can strike indefinitely, and you would be correct, but the vast majority of working actors make less than union autoworkers. And that's likely without the benefits like health insurance and retirement plans. So have a little sense of perspective when you brush off the SAG strike. Working families, as always, will be affected. - EthosProduction, on 10/12/2008, -2/+5Actually, most people in SAG earn much less than the Average Joe
"The average income that SAG members earn from acting—less than $5,000 a year—is low because employment is erratic. Therefore, most actors must supplement their incomes by holding jobs in other occupations."

[if you're only going to skim the site, please note that the figures at the very top are for *salaried* actors, which very, very few SAG members are] - Niallgriff, on 10/12/2008, -1/+4i steal everything.
- joncannon, on 10/12/2008, -1/+4I'm not your buddy, friend. He's not your friend, guy. I'm not your guy, buddy. He's not your buddy, friend. I'm not your friend, guy.
- carpeclunes, on 10/12/2008, -1/+4Alzheimer's is a terrible disease.
- else7en, on 10/12/2008, -2/+4unless their striking for a universal wage increase these ***** are just moaning millionaires
- korvan504521, on 10/13/2008, -0/+2Right on! Because thats worked out so well for the UAW! Grind the screws on those evil corprate suits! They're not real people anyway, they're just greedy thieves! Take them for every dime they got!
Oops, they moved the company out of the country and you're laid off. Too bad, so sad. - crickey23, on 10/12/2008, -1/+3I have Alzheimer's, but at least I don't have Alzheimer's!
- Zalyster, on 10/12/2008, -1/+3Ah, I see what you're saying. It's mostly the smalltime actors rather than very many big names, if any. Still, if you're making $5000 a year off of just acting, I don't think you consider that to be a job. More of a hobby. I could see making that doing theater work or having small parts in TV shows, but I wouldn't try to live off of doing those things.
