- LifeBunny, on 12/23/2008, -1/+0It really needs to stressed that there is a huge difference between big screen actors and television and internet actors, and why new media is so important. Tom Hanks doesn’t have to worry about Bosom Buddies residuals to pay his bills…at least, not anymore. Nor does Robert Redford have to worry about his appearance on The Twilight Zone to pay the light bill. These people are in their own little world.
For example, every time an episode of Law & Order is rerun on the television (or an episode of the Partridge Family, for that matter), the actors involved in that episode of the show get some money in their pockets. Over time, that can work out to be a bit of money, depending upon the particular program.
Think of those character actors you've gotten so used to seeing on the tube. Those people rely on residuals to pay their bills. Happy Days reruns on television give money to Erin Moran, Donnie Most and Anson Williams, who played Joanie Cunningham, Ralph Malph and Potsie Webber, respectively. You aren't seeing them doing anything much anymore...just look at their IMDb listings. They need this money.
When these episodes are run on the internet, these actors don't get these residuals. They get nothing. The studio who created the show gets money, but they're the only ones who do.
The internet is a wonderful thing, and has allowed for the creation of new and exciting technology and toys for us to play with while we're on it. But television and internet actors shouldn't be left holding the bag while we enjoy their performances on streaming video sites.
They don't deserve it.
