- inactive, on 03/02/2008, -1/+33USA Today cannot differentiate between its butthole and a hole in the wall.
- inactive, on 03/02/2008, -0/+21I am *ecstatic* that I'm leaving for Japan on the 24th!
I have Asperger's, so I can practice my social skills with this robot. If I antagonize him by accident or I get on his wrong side somehow, at least I can press a sort of a "Reset" button and start fresh with him again! =-) - sadomatic, on 03/02/2008, -1/+21We should replace stupid people (
- inactive, on 03/02/2008, -5/+22You just compared black people to soulless machines.
- inactive, on 03/02/2008, -2/+166.6 billion humans + all labour replaced by robots = the Apocalypse.
- inactive, on 03/02/2008, -0/+11robot: "I am fluent in over six million forms of communication."
- inactive, on 03/02/2008, -0/+11but they feel like the real thing......so i'm told
- profvegas, on 03/02/2008, -4/+14Behold the future of slave labor...I hope these cutting edge engineers are thinking seriously about Asimov's 3 Laws of Robotics.
- inactive, on 03/02/2008, -0/+9No, maybe sex slaves; they may make an army of artificial sex addicts so they can make many unemployed men into guy prostitutes for the first time. ;)
- tabularosa, on 03/02/2008, -1/+10"I believe that humans & fish can coexist together." - George Dubya Bu$h
- mitt3w, on 03/02/2008, -0/+9psh, wake me when they have sexbots
- capiCrimm, on 03/02/2008, -6/+14are you saying humans aren't soulless machines?
- blackjack75, on 03/02/2008, -0/+8That doesn't sound so bad... unless the japanese are pervert enough to build ugly robots. Oh crap.. they are.
- morpheus69, on 03/02/2008, -4/+11Right on!
- vertinox, on 03/02/2008, -0/+7People have been saying that since the industrial revolution. If you want to create a lot of jobs why not just have people use pickaxes in the mines instead of machines or build buildings without cranes or backhoes. Maybe we could employe millions of blacksmiths if we got rid of cars and went back to horses who needed metal shoes. See my point? The world is changing just like it has for the past 200 years so either adapt or collect unemployment.
- inactive, on 03/02/2008, -2/+9i agree i hate those kinds of jobs, but then i remember someone has to do it, it's no fun standing in the same place doing the same thing 8 hours a day, every day
i'd rather deal with a robot anyways, when go to mcdonalds i just want my food, i don't want to be bothered with people asking me how i'm doing - po43292, on 03/02/2008, -1/+8I love my rock!
- goomba323, on 03/02/2008, -0/+7Your Aspergers is so bad that you might get on the wrong side of a ROBOT?!?! That's gotta be rough..
- blueimac540c, on 03/02/2008, -1/+7to robot: "Do You Speak English?"
- EXreaction, on 03/02/2008, -0/+6As long as robots are not truly learning as they move around then they are just brainless tools.
If they can learn the same way animals do and sort through important information like we do, well, those will be the robots that end up taking over. I know what could happen yet I'd still like to be working on the programming and development team for it. - inactive, on 03/02/2008, -2/+8Robots like these ought to work at McDonald's, food service, assembly lines, and other jobs that are too torturous for us. EVERYONE DESERVES A BETTER JOB!
- theeddyadams, on 03/02/2008, -0/+5The picture with the heads on the poles...umm......
- inactive, on 03/02/2008, -0/+5Dunno...
- inactive, on 03/02/2008, -0/+4you have fun digging that ditch (pun intended!) , cleaning the septic tank, etc... future generations will think you're crazy
- chapium, on 03/02/2008, -0/+4"The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in our lives. We work to better ourselves, and the rest of humanity." -Star Trek
- positron, on 03/02/2008, -0/+4Then Japan is definitely not a good place for robots to become sentient.
- byah, on 03/02/2008, -0/+4their logic is undeniable
- gaoshan, on 03/02/2008, -0/+3"Socially" co-exist? With something that has no conscience? There must be conscience for there to be society. That is like... socially co-existing with a rock. It isn't possible.
- mrremy, on 03/02/2008, -0/+3"Hooked up to a database of words clustered by association, the robot — dubbed Kansei, or "sensibility" — responds to the word "war" by quivering in what looks like disgust and fear. It hears "love," and its pink lips smile."
I can't help but laugh, in TOKYO? Quivering to the word "war"? Heh, guess now they are. - Locke23, on 03/02/2008, -1/+4co-existing.... for now.
- exoendo, on 03/02/2008, -0/+3just be careful guys, we don't wanna end up like this in the distant future:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATFxVB4JFpQ - Napoleone, on 03/02/2008, -0/+3"I know what could happen yet I'd still like to be working on the programming and development team for it."
Wow. So you'd select yourself for extinction simply to satisfy your programming habit? That wreaks of stupid. - mulele, on 03/02/2008, -0/+3Man, I live in Japan and this article smells like "a solid excretory product evacuated from the bowels!"
- Jefkee, on 03/02/2008, -0/+3they need the robots because they are the oldest country (age of their people). They need the robots to take care of their people.
- morpheus69, on 03/02/2008, -2/+4USA Today really have amazing reporters. I'm in Japan right now, and let me tell you, I can't walk 5 feet without bumping into yet another god damned robot...
- HardworkinJudy, on 03/02/2008, -2/+4As the article states, Japan has a need for robots to fill the job market, while in the U.S. unemployment rates do not warrant the need for our workforce. Robots may actually take jobs from individuals who need the income.
- inactive, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2Wow, in the meantime, I have the best hopes of getting a job in Japan, where I'm headed anyway on the 24th.
- blast_flame, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2Calm down. If we give those who become sapient rights and a deep respect for the rights of individuals not collectives (that's where stuff like "I am taking over humanity to help it" come from) then we should be fine.
- inactive, on 03/02/2008, -1/+3Start building your home EMP unit immediately.
- inactive, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2With a place as overpopulated as Japan, it makes you wonder why they want to do this. It'll more than likely replace a lot of the lower end jobs and eventually make its way higher up. Pretty soon the only jobs will be intense thinking jobs, creative jobs, and building robots.
Science fiction says the robots will kill us, but I think everyone will be unemployed and pissed off so much that we'll just kill ourselves. - exoendo, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2this link is better :/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1BdQcJ2ZYY&feature ... - simpleid, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2i didn't realize spoon feeding the elderly was such a burdening task that it needed expensive robots to enter the equation... lol.
- kevir, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2Robots create jobs:

- MaxPayne3476, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2Don't count on it. Japan loves tourists - that don't overstay their welcome ;)
- chapium, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2Pfft.. the US has been doing this for years at the BMV.
- SeriousMite, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2If you have an entire workforce of robots doing all the mundane tasks that keep society running, then capitalism becomes less and less necessary. As long as the rewards from this robotic workforce aren't controlled by a few people, and everyone is guaranteed food, shelter and such, this could be a very good thing.
- Bluetar, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1Awesome, I can't wait for the day these things are everywhere. Bring em on, I'm sick of working for a machine, it's about time these things got back to working for us!
