- cerejota, on 06/26/2008, -1/+29Detroit Symphony Orchestra can now be defined as Electronica?
- Carthagefield, on 06/26/2008, -3/+30I'm thinking the little fella should run as an independent in the forthcoming elections. I know what you're thinking, he's only programmed, but since when has that been an obstacle to the White House?
- Langford, on 06/27/2008, -0/+26Most deluxe metronome ever.
- floridiot2, on 06/27/2008, -0/+23THEY TOOK 'ER JORBS!
- Surferess, on 06/26/2008, -2/+24Great song choice!
- HuskyPuzzle, on 06/26/2008, -0/+18Hmm...pretty impressive, although I think a lot of a conductor's work is done with the inflection he/she does with the eyes, which homeboy here, doesn't exactly have...
- Daz3, on 06/27/2008, -2/+19It isn't really conducting anything, it was programmed to move the same way the conductor would if he were there but is incapable to change timing etc. Just a PR stunt.
- colasrtney, on 06/27/2008, -1/+15Conducting today, terminating tomorrow.
- LR2_, on 06/27/2008, -0/+12This seems to be one of the new and improved models. Here is a video of an older ASIMO.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTlV0Y5yAww - thatsmyaibo, on 06/27/2008, -1/+12I took this at Disneyland last month. You have to see it in person to really appreciate it...it's almost scary.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RM3S622swy4 - mrinsanity, on 06/27/2008, -0/+8I don't know why you're getting dugg down. Probably because most people don't realize the proper role of a conductor in an orchestra. Just beating time and giving sections their cues is something any fool could do if they memorized the right patterns (or had it programmed into them). What would Asimo have done if the orchestra had timing or balance issues? Would Asimo recognize these or would he just keep to a strict programmed set of moves?
- tb0n3r, on 06/27/2008, -0/+7Duh! He wasn't born in the United States!
- Daz3, on 06/27/2008, -3/+8Well why wouldn't you program it to do that...?
- magicjohnson, on 06/26/2008, -7/+12quite baller imo, i love how the robot even correctly brings in the rest of the orchestra with its left-hand
- homesickalien, on 06/27/2008, -3/+8He's probably got a MIDI plug for an anus.
- anagoge, on 06/27/2008, -1/+6I bet the sound is *****.
- lotuseater, on 06/27/2008, -0/+5Notice there is no conductor's podium that he has to climb... we all know how that would end.
- jakash, on 06/27/2008, -1/+6Impressive, but I don't think this really shows off the true capabilities of modern technology - I mean, the robot is very impressive, but I'm sure that it wasn't just programmed the music or even the actions to conduct the music and then just left to it's own devices. I think ASIMO had been spoon fed exactly which action to take, when and where, and without the full extent of it's capabilities, such as recognizing objects and the like. Digg me down, but all this video really shows is a remote-control conductor, albeit a very advanced one, and although ASIMO can do much more, this example isn't it.
- mrinsanity, on 06/27/2008, -2/+6beating time != conducting
I'd like to see the robot determine the correct balance of the sections of the orchestra and adjust it in the middle of a performance... you know, think on its feet and react to things. - HeatherH88, on 06/27/2008, -1/+5Not as adorable as Wall-E... but still pretty darned cool ;)
- CardHockman, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4Cool, it's a billion dollar metronome!
- screamthenrun, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4not only that, but most conductors actually display some sort of emotion..
also, during the ritard [for all you unmusical diggers that's when the music slows down] a conductor would normally subdivide.. instead of 1 2 3 1 2 3 [what the robot was doing] it would normally be 1&2&3&1&2&3& ...
[I'm not convinced that the robot is actually capable of those motions yet because I don't think that it would be able to move fast enough for the snapping motion that a conductor makes for the & counts]
I'm actually disappointed that they didn't wait a little longer to program it better... but then again it's all about publicity.. and what do I know about that? - mattearle, on 06/27/2008, -3/+7Conductors don't do anything anyway. Now we have robots that can move their arms around while standing in front of people who know how to play a song perfectly. Awesome.
- erranttv, on 06/26/2008, -0/+4Reminds me of the Reno Philharmonic's Slot Machine Concerto: http://www.renophilharmonic.com/directories/entrie ...
- xmizzbojanglesx, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3That was one of the funniest things I've seen today lol
- hermslice, on 06/27/2008, -2/+5it is also clear that you have never played an instrument in an orchestra with a Conductor....if you had you would know that statement is completely false.
- thomas040, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3he doesn't seem to be very emotionally tuned with the music....
not really conducting then... - ironeus, on 08/01/2008, -1/+4Very cool and nice to see the DSO accept this bold move from tradition even if it is a one-time promotion.
- nkleffman, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3A robot that can conduct a symphony can kill us and stack our bodies like driftwood.
- Carthagefield, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3Touché.
- ahawks, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4Buried for "baller"
- tb0n3r, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3Aye. 'Tis a joke.
- visitmyblogplz, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3Not very impressive if you ask me. The robot was programmed to do the exact same motions and didn't do what a real conductor is suppose to do.
- NecroSexy, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Lacking in roboto!
- xerofilter, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3Finally, robotic beings rule the world.
The humans are dead,
The humans are dead.
We used poisonous gasses
And we poisoned their asses. - jellyfishes, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2I think it would be funnier to see an industrial robotic arm "conduct" an orchestra instead.
- just101, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ur8AwQHusZw&feature ...
- PabloIV, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2I was recently told that the ASIMO project was scrapped, is that true?
- arpad, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2We tried to get Asimo to stay and take over the mayor's office but the little guy's overqualified for the job.
- verticalQ, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Conductors usually help convey the emotional intensity. I found this performance a bit.... robotic.
- krakelohm, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Exactly. And to ask a dumb question, what is the point of a conductor? Everyone already knows the sheet music and such. As a layperson it just looks like he is going through motions.
- iammzac, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2This is the beginning of Wall-E.
- caeser5786, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2well at least that wasn't creepy...
and ironic, the Honda robot conducting the Detroit Symphony Orchestra... - tb0n3r, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Binary solo!
- mathcreative, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2The point he's making about the robot is right though.
- peppino, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2I, for one, welcome our new robot conductor overlords.
- pinchduck, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2GM makes Hummers and Honda makes great marine engines, well engineered lawnmowers, fuel efficient cars, and symphony conducting robots that perform in the shadow of the Ren Cen (GM's headquarters). I live in metro Detroit but I have no doubt who will be making popular, efficient, and practical products in 2108.
- hammerpants, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2I love youtube comments.
"It walks like a black man sneaking away from the scene of a crime.
Now I see where this robot thing is going... " - Midtowner, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2A professional group doesn't really need a conductor.
- zippe, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2i knew robots would be useful one day.
