- jflowers45, on 03/28/2008, -1/+6Brave New World or 1984?
I say 1984 - CharlesSaint, on 03/28/2008, -2/+7Also, if you or anyone you know has an iPhone, there is a very handy free online book reader service http://textonphone.com (only accessible through iPhone, or if you want to see what it looks like there is a TextOnPhone facebook app) that has 1984 as well as thousands of other books, in a customizable (color, font style/size, # of pages displayed at once) and easy to use form. Not only does it keep track of where you last left off, but it also automatically caches advanced pages in order to maintain a smooth experience (even when your connection is bad/non existent). In addition to those two features, the service also allows you to write notes on any page you feel like, and see others' notes that they have left, enhancing your experience even further. Notes are also accessible in a centralized location in order to see them all in one place. Turning pages is as easy as simply tapping the screen once. And once again, IT'S FREE!
I know I kind of sound like some kind of infomercial or something, but I can't overstate my satisfaction with this service. Since I've discovered it, it's been the absolute killer app for my iPhone bar none! I just got done reading "Catcher In The Rye" and I can say with full confidence that the sole reason I was exposed to that great book, and actually decided to give it my time, was because TextOnPhone made it an easy experience for me to read. Bottom line. TextOnPhone + iPhone = Game over Kindle.
PS - Oh, did I mention that you can upload YOUR OWN eBooks to the service to read? I just bought "Atlas Shrugged" on paperback, downloaded a PDF/RTF copy at TPB, and threw it up on TextOnPhone. Now, no matter what I'll have access to it!- CharlesSaint, on 03/28/2008, -1/+5Oh, sorry edit time ran out. I failed to mention the service applies to iPhone AND iPod Touch users. And because the service allows you to cache advance pages or download a given number of pages in advance for offline viewing, going out of a wifi hotspot is no big deal.
- Dweller99, on 03/28/2008, -2/+2Oh sure, read this online so they can track me for re-education? I don't think so!
- VikingoTJ, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2Use a proxy or download it as a web archive from an Internet Cafe onto your USB memory stick.
- rpfan2008, on 03/28/2008, -1/+2he is not SADDAM HUSSEIN or GOBBELS
- Dweller99, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2guess I forgot the /sarcasm tag...
- drafhk, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1You absolutely didn't need it.
- suzywang3000, on 03/28/2008, -8/+3Unlike Mr Orwell apparently, I can actually remember 1984 and believe you me some of his recollections of the era are well off the mark. There were no such things as Memory Holes, was no such country as Eurasia and Big Brother did not hit our screens until 1999. I also find it staggering that there was no mention of Rubiks Cubes or the film Spies Like Us. On the other hand I did approve of some of the stricter measures bought in to promote sensible behaviour in the office which were advocated in this book.
