- inactive, on 11/20/2009, -0/+24I love all the designs, but some of them cry out "Spice!" a lot better than others.
- inactive, on 11/21/2009, -0/+16they wanted salvador dali involved, but he wanted $100,000 an hour (not a joke).
giger did some art for dune also. - kaidovak, on 11/21/2009, -1/+17It's as if the artist never touched the books.
- illinest, on 11/21/2009, -2/+17why does he believe futuristic spaceships would all have tacky paintjobs?
- DarthVolta, on 11/21/2009, -0/+12Those are pretty interesting images, but as someone said above, they don't really mesh very well with the images conjured by the books.
Colors play a fairly large role in the books - each House has its own distinct colors. Green and black with red Hawk for House Atreides.
In looking up some more info on the upcoming adaptation, this sentence just about destroys any hope that I have for it: "Author Kevin J. Anderson and Frank Herbert's son Brian Herbert, who have together written multiple Dune sequels and prequels since 1999, are attached to the project as technical advisors."
If ***** Omnius or some other ***** machine overlord shows up in this movie, I WILL KILL MYSELF.
And when my tainted spirit finds its destination, I will topple the master of that dark place. From my black throne, I will lash together a machine made of blood and bone, and fueled by my hatred for you this fear engine will bore a hole beween this world and that one. When it begins you will hear the sound of children screaming - as though from a great distance. A smoking orb of nothing will grow above your bed, and from it will emerge a thousand starving crows. As I slip through the widening maw in my new form, you will catch only a glimpse of my radiance before you are incinerated. Then, as tears of bubbling pitch stream down my face, my dark work will begin. I will open one of my six mouths, and I will sing the song that ends the Earth. - MacBookForMe, on 11/21/2009, -1/+10Beautiful art!
- inkswamp, on 11/21/2009, -0/+9I like the art a lot but it doesn't feel like Dune to me.
For my money, whoever did the art direction for David Lynch's Dune pretty much nailed what I saw in my head when I read the book. The book has an "old time" feeling to it despite being futuristic, so the grimy, industrial look and the hints of art deco and turn-of-the-century design aesthetic really felt right at home. - inactive, on 11/21/2009, -1/+8looks more like saved by the bell. i liked david lynch's darker vision better.
- PlasticHotDog, on 11/21/2009, -0/+6I love how colorful the spaceships are. Much more exciting than other space-theme shows and movies.
- frousfroud, on 11/21/2009, -0/+5I always imagined everything in Dune to be in shades of gray and brown. Never thought the ships would be in funky colors.
- themastersb, on 11/21/2009, -1/+6Does tackiness change?

- PeterBassett, on 11/21/2009, -0/+4Dugg for Penny Arcade! (Unless they nicked it too.)
- jckmff545, on 11/21/2009, -0/+4Amazing!
- iborobotosis23, on 11/21/2009, -0/+4Because he wants them to be fabulous!
- Cyberdine, on 11/21/2009, -2/+5maybe because fashion changes?
- mebbin, on 11/21/2009, -0/+3Awesome
- aargh01, on 11/21/2009, -0/+3Now that's how you hate!
I salute you, sir. - Diggnabbit, on 11/21/2009, -0/+3liar.
- Maraud3r, on 11/21/2009, -0/+3So rare only a billion people get to see it on the internet!
- nepidae, on 11/22/2009, -0/+3its like the 80s took a ***** on that page
- Tyrghast, on 11/21/2009, -0/+3Love the look of the spice transport ship, with the melange swishing about inside
- marmotjmarmot, on 11/21/2009, -0/+3"Breaking the Light Barrier"? Is that really the same as "Folding Space"?
- NotAChickenHawk, on 11/21/2009, -0/+3At the end of the book, Paul's voice is so powerful that when he tells Helen Gauis Mohaim "Silence!", Herbert says something like "the word seemed to take substance as it travelled through the air between them" - so the voice weapon in Lynch's movie was correct, except that a) Paul didn't need to wear something on his neck to do it and b) only Paul could do it.
It was a confirmation of the Fremen Legend: "And his word shall bring death eternal to those who stand against the Righteous" - Thoric, on 11/21/2009, -1/+4Spaceship's paint jobs are directly related to the design of pants of the same period
- PeterBassett, on 11/21/2009, -0/+2So this guy has a thing for stripes and checks then? Does he think they are thinning or summat?
Nice art, but too stripey! - hairyblue, on 11/22/2009, -0/+2dugg for sci-fi in general.
- Tyrghast, on 11/21/2009, -0/+2If you recall the fight in the cave where Paul earns his water rings you would remember the Voice being implemented in combat. Not to mention the dozens of times Jessica employs it in violent situations in Dune and the two following novels she appears. The Atriedes soldiers are also conditioned to the use of the Voice.
You are correct that the weirding way itself did not involve use of the Voice, but the Voice was used in combat in the book, and the idea of the weirding modules is an obvious extension of the idea of the Voice and a cop out used by lazy people working on the 1984 film adaptation, because staying faithful to the book is too much work. - mkriss5681, on 11/21/2009, -0/+2I hope they finally do a good remake. In the book they learn a psychic martial art in order to win back the planet. For some reason the movie studio thought that magic sound boxes strapped to people necks was cooler. Totally ruined the movie.
psychic martial art > magic sound boxes - winstonc, on 11/21/2009, -1/+3Seems like someone took a bunch of assorted sci-fi images and put "Dune" in title.
- Tyrghast, on 11/21/2009, -0/+1It wasn't that it was 'cooler', but rather it would be hard to show the Voice on screen. People not already indocrinated in the franchise wouldn't understand what was going on, so they used the boxes to try and make it easier to get across. Not that I approve, but it had nothing to do with 'cooler'.
- DarthVolta, on 11/21/2009, -0/+1Don't think so. I can't see anyone other than Tycho writing that...
- HavocXphere, on 11/22/2009, -0/+1Noooo. The first spaceship looks like a fcking pink tiger pattern one would find on a leotard.
Less psychedelic abstract shapes and more dry dessert feel plz. - obtainkarma, on 11/24/2009, -0/+1Thought you guys may be interested, bunch of interviews with concept artist and illustrators.
grate inspiration.. www.deadlinestudios.com
Cheers. - DarthVolta, on 11/21/2009, -0/+1Voice had nothing to do with combat in the book. The 'weirding way' was only related to Voice in that it was a Bene Gesserit training.
- GorfTron, on 11/21/2009, -0/+1Pants.

- Financialhwy, on 11/21/2009, -0/+1some incredible designs
- Tyrghast, on 11/21/2009, -0/+1Purists are never satisfied. I bet you also disliked every minor creative liberty taken in the Lord of the Rings movies as well.
- Tyrghast, on 11/21/2009, -1/+1When you're done ripping Penny-Arcade for ways to express your hate, Omnius has zero connection to the original Dune books. There is no remote reason for him to be associated with this movie, as he would have been dead for millennia.
Also, Brain Herbert's additions to the series haven't really detracted from it. I rather enjoy the stories about the Butlerian Jihad. - valarking, on 11/21/2009, -2/+2i love jodorowsky, but him not doing dune was probably better for everyone's sake.
same thing with lynch except that happened. :( - GorfTron, on 11/21/2009, -1/+1It was the only image that seemed to have anything to do with the story.
- DarthVolta, on 11/21/2009, -1/+1Good point.
Either way, I think we can agree that the voice modules were retarded. - DarthVolta, on 11/21/2009, -1/+1I'm not trying to rip off Penny Arcade. I'm posting on digg about Dune. Do you really think I was trying to pass it off as my own, hoping that no one would notice?
Also, applying standard logic to the machinations of Brian Herbert will do you no good. Omnius was destroyed in those prequels, and yet he still somehow manages to show up in Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune, two books that were supposedly based on Frank Herberts 'notes' for Dune 7.
If they managed to infect what were supposed to be two books based on Frank's notes, I have no doubt that they would also manage to do the same thing with a film adaptation of his original novel.
As if that weren't enough, your post lost any valid points it may have had when you claimed that Brian Herbert's additions to the series haven't detracted from it. - theOster, on 11/21/2009, -1/+1i've always been confused by what the hell an ornithopter was. and given that i dont see any here, i guess i'm not the only one. i mean they flap their wings like a bird right? is it just me, or does that sounds just plain silly to anyone else?
that said, Dune is one of my favorite boooks of all time. i'm hoping Neil Blomkamp picks up the movie now that Berg stepped down. - LarkStew, on 11/21/2009, -2/+1Those images remind me of the Flash Gordon movie...
- ament001, on 11/21/2009, -2/+1In the future, we have evolved beyond good taste.
