Poverty a "Growing Problem" for US Cities
reuters.com — Most U.S. mayors and city officials say poverty is a growing problem, with many families unable to get by, according to a survey released on Monday. "More than four decades after the United States government declared 'war' on poverty, the 'official' 2008 poverty rate is 12.3 percent, not even 2 percent less than the 1967 figure of 14.2 percent."

- govsucks, on 10/06/2008, -0/+3The Government is going to do just as good of a job with the "poverty war" as they have done with the "Drug war". You can't legislate how people live their lives.
No amount of government theft is gonna make someone who wants shinny rims buy health insurance instead. As a matter of fact, government offering a crutch is more likely to have people take advantage of it, buy the shinny rims anyway and have some other sap buy their health insurance for them at the point of a government gun. Once everyone else discovers this ( as the Mexicans have) you will have a FAIL that only government can provide. - zacharytelschow, on 10/07/2008, -1/+1The silver bullet cure for poverty: get a job. Median hours of adult employment in poor families with children is estimated to be between 12.5 and 19.2 hours per week (hours are believed to be over-reported, if you read the page linked below). Parents working full time would cut the child poverty rate in the United States by 72%. Government programs could only dream of such an effect.
