Portraits of Humans Who Have Lived in Three Centuries (PICS)
markstoryphotography.com — There are 250,000 centenarians (people 100 years and older) currently living in the world. In rare instances, people live to 110 years and beyond, inspiring a new demographic label: supercentenarian. The goal of this artist's project is to photograph people who have lived in three centuries.

dugg.- felchdonkey, on 01/01/2008, -7/+73What's sad about it? Living as long as they have? Experiencing as much?
For that matter, what do you mean "inspiring?" What is it inspiring you to do? Live to be 110 years old?
Sorry, I'm just getting tired of these Hallmark comments.- wellyuk, on 01/01/2008, -17/+2Sad because most of them probably won't outlast the week.
Inspiring because... nope, he's got me on that one. - RobotBuddha, on 01/01/2008, -5/+3Sad that the best case scenario for any of us is to rot, mind and body. Losing everything that once gave meaning to our lives and becoming a sad shell of what we once were. And then dying, to be used as food for maggots.
- Birdoftruth, on 01/01/2008, -2/+5I suggest you quit reading the nietzschean literature and throw away your pessimism. Start reading Marcus Aurelius he talks about how when someone dies it is nothing to be sad about because it is what nature wanted and is part of the plan.
- meebabo77, on 01/01/2008, -3/+2Hunter S. Thompson didn't end like that. He shot himself in the head before he got too old.
- wellyuk, on 01/01/2008, -17/+2Sad because most of them probably won't outlast the week.
- gllopc, on 01/01/2008, -1/+24I'm sad that the server is down already.
- Fractl, on 01/01/2008, -0/+9I'm inspired that it lasted until the front page.
- felchdonkey, on 01/01/2008, -7/+73What's sad about it? Living as long as they have? Experiencing as much?
- mcla007, on 01/01/2008, -9/+180Asked why he has lived to 110, the guy (#61) said, "I don't fool around with women, beer, wine or whiskey." So what's the point of living that long? :P
- nicktheawesome, on 01/01/2008, -10/+45Cannabis.
- banido, on 01/01/2008, -9/+102Maybe he fooled around with men.
I'm just saying...- J4k3, on 01/01/2008, -9/+1Not everyone is like you and your paps, dork.
- AdmiralJimbob, on 01/01/2008, -1/+36Bragging rights.
- Frnnkdlxx, on 01/01/2008, -3/+39Perpetual self education and the expansion of the mind can be a curiously satisfying object. Though the rewards are only in the eyes of the beholder, I suppose.
- saisumimen, on 01/01/2008, -1/+19Besides, around the age of 55-60, all that "sexual intercourse" you've been trying to get all those years suddenly doesn't seem as interesting.
- URnotheonly1, on 01/01/2008, -3/+3really? aww man, dood
- saisumimen, on 01/01/2008, -1/+19Besides, around the age of 55-60, all that "sexual intercourse" you've been trying to get all those years suddenly doesn't seem as interesting.
- SQLDigger, on 01/01/2008, -1/+2It probably makes it seem even longer . . .
- whyufail, on 01/01/2008, -2/+9It's called moderation, something digg members are not familiar with.
- ungamedplayer, on 01/01/2008, -0/+4Heh, thats all that digg users do.. moderate.
Digg me up/down you bastards.- bluenash, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1you bastards! you bastards! I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!

- HannibalLecter, on 01/01/2008, -0/+28"If you resolve to give up smoking, drinking and loving, you don't actually live longer; it just seems longer."
-Clement Freud - MaximusPryme, on 01/01/2008, -1/+2He says he didn't fool around with women, but that doesn't exclude the fact that he has slept with women. He just doesn't have sex for the sake of having sex, I'm guessing.
- ICSU, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1I prefer #90's version:
"I still chase good-looking women around. I just can't catch up with them — my legs don't work fast enough."
- LUCCHINA, on 01/01/2008, -16/+2Amazing picts, and faces !
Dugg. - phnx0221, on 01/01/2008, -12/+19That was beautiful. What a wonderful concept for an artist to undertake! A celebration of life, of death, and of a rarely seen feat of longevity. Inspiring indeed.
- iashraf, on 01/01/2008, -4/+6How has it inspired you?
- MadOtaku, on 01/01/2008, -0/+5Maybe the really well taken portraits have inspired phnx0221 to become a better portrait photographer or to pick up her camera and do something. That's kind of how I feel.
- iashraf, on 01/01/2008, -4/+6How has it inspired you?
- Darkhacker, on 01/01/2008, -0/+190#90 FTW! -- "I still chase good-looking women around. I just can't catch up with them — my legs don't work fast enough."

- aukxsona, on 01/01/2008, -4/+2Uh my current husband will be like him at his age...why is that disgusting?
- felchdonkey, on 01/01/2008, -0/+5Hell, I plan to be like that at that age. Hope I get to be that age.
I'm getting my "Sexy Grandpa" hat ready now so I have something to wear on the free casino bus to Atlantic City!

- GoneFishing, on 01/01/2008, -0/+18"# 14 103 year-old Portuguese widow, dressed entirely in black wool to mourn the loss of her husband. He died in his early twenties — as do many fishermen in Portugal. Many Portuguese women hold strongly to their Catholic faith, living as widows for the rest of their lives."
...wow- jerichobp, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2weird thing is, if your a widow, as long as your husband died, there's nothing in the catholic religion that says you can't be remarried.
- ICSU, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1wasted good-quality genes
- iiBeLiEvE, on 01/01/2008, -0/+3That comment made me smile :)

Gotta love america :)- theodenking, on 01/01/2008, -0/+4What the hell does that have to do with America?
- fugazied, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1And that guy fought in both WW1 and WW2 and lived as a hobo for a number of years during the depression. He'd have a lot of stories to tell I bet. Historians would hopefully be recording their stories for future generations, nothing like people who were actually lived through those times.
- aukxsona, on 01/01/2008, -26/+3That will be my husband..... ; ) love ya hun.
- lee1199, on 01/01/2008, -2/+33Absolutely excellent story, these great people are living history. I was sad to hear a few days ago America lost its last WW1 veteran, in Britain we obviously only have a few WW1 vets left, among them is a Mr Henry Allingham who is now 111 years old, Henry is also the last survivor of the epic battle of Jutland. A great big thank-you to the photographer for putting this together.

- nogami, on 01/01/2008, -0/+15I remember seeing a documentary a number of years back that had to do with the Wright Brothers initial flight. One of their relatives was also present for the flight (she was a young child at the time), and had experienced everything from the first flight through supersonic flight and space travel. Pretty amazing...
- ckoehler, on 01/01/2008, -0/+27The next time I hear someone say they are old at age 35 or even 50 I will be emailing this site. We need to stop worrying so much about getting old!
- jimmiss, on 01/01/2008, -1/+8I've felt old for some time now, and I'm 24.
- jcm267, on 01/01/2008, -0/+3I started to feel old when attractive women who weren't alive when Reagan was President started popping up. I'm also 24.
- felchdonkey, on 01/01/2008, -0/+4Hey, just 'cause I'm only 37 doesn't mean I can't feel old. This the oldest I've ever been!
- theuncommonman, on 01/01/2008, -0/+0it would be easier to just slap them and tell them to be grateful for even having lived that long
- jimmiss, on 01/01/2008, -1/+8I've felt old for some time now, and I'm 24.
- pateo, on 01/01/2008, -0/+57#90 seems like the coolest old dude ever. He still works and walks 3 miles a day? Amazing.
- jcm267, on 01/01/2008, -0/+18This guy is the man. I wonder how much drinking and smoking he did. I'm guessing he was never one to do either to excess.
FTA:
At 102, he was walking ten miles a day.
Now he walks three miles a day and can still
read the bottom three lines on an eye chart.
He gave up drinking in his 60s,
but smoked into his 80s. - H0tKarl, on 01/01/2008, -0/+33I'm pretty sure this guy could beat up the average Digg user.
- DeathfireD, on 01/01/2008, -1/+6*no, please, anything but my hands mr. old man! I need them for the keyboard and for masturbating to porn*
- jcm267, on 01/01/2008, -0/+18This guy is the man. I wonder how much drinking and smoking he did. I'm guessing he was never one to do either to excess.
- slightlygifted, on 01/01/2008, -1/+42erm........whats with number 1? he's only 42.
- perogi21, on 01/01/2008, -2/+11huffing makes you feel much older.
- AeonTorpor, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1He spent something like 17 years on the streets. I think that'll age you a bit prematurely.
- TheNepenthe, on 01/01/2008, -0/+0The artist originally was taking pictures of people who have aged well beyond their years. My dad is a bit older than that he and def doesn't look that old at all.
- felchdonkey, on 01/01/2008, -0/+9This reminded me of Jim Hammond, a youngster by these standards, but at 93, he's one of my favorite bloggers:
http://eldr.com/blogs/jim-hammond
At 93, he's still competing in races and winning - the guy's amazing. - jcm267, on 01/01/2008, -0/+4#86 looks a little like Clint Eastwood.
- kuyman, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1younger, methinks...

- MarrowMan, on 01/01/2008, -1/+33dammit it's dead (the site I mean)
- TheGooseyOne, on 01/01/2008, -3/+13any mirrorz? i like the fact that 2 of the few sites that have received the digg effect this new year's eve are a site with psuedo-nude pics of Keira Knightley, and a site featuring pictures of people all over the age of 100. At least Digg is diverse in its oddities.
- daxsymbiont, on 01/01/2008, -6/+2i.e. "who r more than hundred and just happen to be born early in a century".
i.e. others may be older but just happen to be born in a 50s or sth.
sensationalist bs.- felchdonkey, on 01/01/2008, -1/+3I think you mean *late* in a century.
Also, anyone born in the 1950s would be younger than them, and anyone born in the 1850s is dead.
So, you're wrong there too.- daxsymbiont, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1for the first you're right. for the second you got into the mentality "i'm so smart i'm going to own his logic" that it devolved to *****. the "50s" can be any 50s.

- felchdonkey, on 01/01/2008, -0/+7If science and medicine move fast enough, she might even have a shot at being one of the first people to live in FOUR centuries.
Let's hope... - GreatDrok, on 01/01/2008, -0/+4Anyone born in 2000 does too since the year 2000 was the last year of the 20th century. The Queen Mother was 101 when she died and had lived in three centuries because she was born in 1900 (last year of the 19th century) and died in 2002 (2nd year of the 21st century). Also note that Queen Victoria was the first British monarch of the 20th century but only just because she died in January 1901.

- AmICoolNow, on 01/01/2008, -0/+9It's fun to keep refreshing and see which ones actually load.
- DemonSpawn77, on 01/01/2008, -4/+5I don't see the point of living that long. I mean, I'm not saying these people should die; they're too valuable as citizens. They're living, breathing pieces of history. They've done and seen so much... But that's a bit of my point. When you've done it all and seen it all, what more is there to do? Personally, I don't want to live a day past 80. Digg, assassinate me if I end up living past September 7th, 2069!
- Hermitwise, on 01/01/2008, -0/+3Would you rather die being terrified of it or feeling like you've worn out your life? Personally I think the idea of no longer being afraid of death and then dying kind of comforting.
- felchdonkey, on 01/01/2008, -1/+13I'm not surprised that you'd say that at age 18. Wait until you're a bit older, and you realize that 80 isn't an abstract number, but a time that's going to really come, and not that long from now. You'll be changing your tune.
- tba2287, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1Honestly, I sympathize with him. I'm 20 and I'm starting to dread the prospect of getting older. Each year I feel like time goes faster, especially if I compare my teenage years from this decade to my childhood years from the '90s.
- felchdonkey, on 01/01/2008, -1/+1It really does get faster. The last twelve years of my life seem like they all happened at once, whereas the years from grade 1 to graduating high school seem like a lifetime.
I wonder if they keep accelerating as you continue to age?
I'm 37 now - anyone in their 50s or older want to shed some light?- splorpdotorg, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1My theory is that the older you are, the less percentage of your life a year is, so time appears to pass more quickly. When you're 10, a year is a tenth of your life. When you're 30, it's 3.33% of your life. Remember how long the week before XMas took when you were 5 years old? ForEVER. This year? It sped by so fast that it barely seems like it happened. I'm only 36; I can't imagine how fast it'll fly when I'm in my 70s.
- Matt2k, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1I'm younger than you, but I would agree.
When you're a kid, those summer vacations last a lifetime. Each day is filled with some new adventure.
Then you join the working class grind and the days slip by faster than you know
Age really is a state of mind as much as it is health.
- felchdonkey, on 01/01/2008, -1/+1It really does get faster. The last twelve years of my life seem like they all happened at once, whereas the years from grade 1 to graduating high school seem like a lifetime.
- CowboyBebop, on 01/01/2008, -0/+4I'm only 30 and don't feel 50 more years is going to be enough. Oh how young and stupid we all were at one point.
- Nick519, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1i thought the same thing: oh, you say that NOW, but the time will come too quickly and you'll be saying, "i want more TIME!"
- tba2287, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1Honestly, I sympathize with him. I'm 20 and I'm starting to dread the prospect of getting older. Each year I feel like time goes faster, especially if I compare my teenage years from this decade to my childhood years from the '90s.
- InRussetShadows, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2Maybe we all can greet him when he turns 80 with knives and guns and say, "Your request is granted." There's something poetic about that, I think.
- dgh1973, on 01/01/2008, -8/+1"Asked why he has lived to 110, the guy (#61) said, "I don't fool around with women, beer, wine or whiskey." So what's the point of living that long?"

- Trollmaster, on 01/01/2008, -4/+18#86 - "I don't drink, smoke or chase women;"
he says, "they chase me."
do those women count as necrophiliacs?- felchdonkey, on 01/01/2008, -1/+3Funny, but...
Please save this comment somewhere that you can read it again when you're over 80. You do realize you're getting older yourself, right?- Trollmaster, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1I certainly won't be saying that women chase me if I ever reach 100+ years
- Matt2k, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1I took it figuratively, as if the desire for drinking, smoking, and women never left. Those things still chase him, so to speak.
It was a clever comment. When I'm 110, I better be writing some absolutely withering flames on the interweb-nets 7.0
- Matt2k, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1I took it figuratively, as if the desire for drinking, smoking, and women never left. Those things still chase him, so to speak.

- dcronin90, on 01/01/2008, -0/+8That photographer has an admirable goal. It's kind of like the movement to have WWII vets tell of their war stories before they die. (1,000 WWII vets die each day).
- Jeuk, on 01/01/2008, -1/+1Down she goes.
- felchdonkey, on 01/01/2008, -1/+1Please tell me you're talking about the server.
- cosmoli, on 01/01/2008, -0/+3Some people in the gallery have ages below 100 according to the captions, like #1 or #46 (although e.g. #1 looks older). What am I misunderstanding?
- Pake, on 01/01/2008, -0/+3I give the Native American guy massive props. 70 years of homelessness because he finds it better than living on a reservation, even though the reservation would take care of his needs. Then again, it really does seem that the only reason most old people die earlier than you think they should is because they stop being active and just get bored.
- TheTSArt, on 01/01/2008, -0/+5Actually it says he's been homeless 17 years, and he's only 42 years old.
- Pake, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1Ah, yeah, I didn't read it right it seems. Seems this isn't about living for three centuries as much as it's just a gallery of people who look older than they are and more.
- tantajoa, on 01/01/2008, -3/+0That guy isn't even indian. Don't trust anyone with a full beard and light skin claiming to be cherokee .
- alwilson, on 01/01/2008, -0/+0He could have owned a casino!
- TheTSArt, on 01/01/2008, -0/+5Actually it says he's been homeless 17 years, and he's only 42 years old.

Why not try to live that long if you keep a reasonable amount of health? As long as my brain works and I can talk, listen and maybe even read, and sit outside and feel the sun and the wind on my face, smell the ocean and see the stars glimmering, I'll be happy. It is a truly beautiful world and I for one am so happy to be here. I can only hope that one day I will be as wrinkled- and wise as these folks.
