- socbookmark2007, on 05/09/2008, -5/+17I can think of 2 million reasons why this is a total waste of money! If I wanted to see a giant horse I'd buy a magnifying glass and go stand in a field.
- Frost9999, on 05/09/2008, -0/+10I'm surprised it wasn't torn down when Americans went through their 'freedom fries' stage.
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -2/+11 By that logic there is always a worthy cause somewhere and we would never be able to do anything artistic or non essential.
- citydragon, on 05/09/2008, -5/+10The logical conclusion? A big pile of steaming *****.
- mal1964, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4That was dumb;
french (frnch)
tr.v. frenched, french·ing, french·es
1. To cut (green beans, for example) into thin strips before cooking.
2. To trim fat or bone from (a chop, for example).
3. or French
a. Slang To give a French kiss to.
b. Vulgar Slang To perform oral sex on.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/french - Twenty, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4There are much, much bigger wastes of money around, so don't sweat it too much there.
- digghasnoethics, on 05/09/2008, -1/+5The pathetic thing was just how poor these submission were. Not only were they not impressive, they were actively crap with 'artists' seeming not to put any effort into them despite being paid to submit ideas. The horse, boring as it was, was the best of the artist submissions - which tells you something about the rest.
I don't know about you, but for 10k I could come up with far better, plus how to build it (something they ignored). - jknevitt, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4"Liberty Enlightening the World" is 46m on a 47 m pedestal. It's kind of cheaty if you want to count the pedestal too.
- eddx, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4If anyone is wondering what the Angel of the North looks like, here is a couple of photos for you...

I am sure this horse will make for a fantastic photograph given the right conditions, not going to say that makes it worth £2 million ($4 million USD) but the Angel of the North is NOT ugly in my opinion! - plingboot, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4yeah... you could throw away 2mil on 'building communities' whatever the hell that means... or you could blow it on a giant white hoss. I know which I'd pick. Cmon, a ***** giant white horse stood next to the road. have a bit of vision and passion. Something so iconic and unconventional is going to put whereever the hell this place is on the map.
- Grimdotdotdot, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3There are far bigger wastes of money than this.
Of course, it will probably end up costing five times that amount... - RubineBoy, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3Think they never heard of what happend in Troy ...
- StolidOne, on 05/09/2008, -1/+4Brilliant, just what the area needs! It's taken over 3 years (and counting) of roadworks to try and get the A2 right, spending tons of money on a giant horse will at least give people something to look at whilst they are waiting in the traffic jams!
- MaxMWood, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4Shouldn't Brtains largest sculpture be something that is related to Britain? A giant horse is kind of lame.
- mickstephenson, on 05/09/2008, -1/+4The Angel of the North is is a hardcore industrial naked chick with aeroplane wings and a nice rack. This is just a big horse with a big knob
- Obidose, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3It is not going to be Britains tallest sculpture: buried as inacurate. Nottingham university is buiding a 60m sculpture very soon (July is the plan) and planning permission has allready been approved.

http://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/news_page/news_ab ... - BN2L, on 05/09/2008, -1/+4The artists impression looks delightful, framed between two electricity pylons and with that charming power station in the background.
Kent is my home county, every summer we have water shortages, public services are stretched to the limit and the council's response?.... Build more houses and a giant white horse. - BN2L, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3I can see it now, 50 Greeks jump out armed to the teeth and ransack Ebbsfleet.
- mal1964, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Not you frost, the other thing.
- monkeyroyal, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3OK, one last time. This horse is small... but that one out there is very far away. Small... far away...
- mal1964, on 05/09/2008, -2/+4f you gonna, gonna, gonna, gonna
If you gonna ride, by ride, by ride
If you gonna, gonna, gonna, gonna
If you gonna ride, by ride, by ride
If you gonna ride
Don't ride the white horse
If you gonna ride
Don't ride the white horse - RubineBoy, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3And on top of that, they did it naked.
- 2Bnor2B, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2They should just build it out of Legos.
- DrinkPaint, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Angel of the North is waaay better
- Cayfox, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2That's perhaps 0.3% of what the taxpayer is paying to bail out a bunch of greedy bankers and investors. I'm only too happy to put in a few pennies to help build a piece of public artwork. At least the general public will be able to enjoy its benefits.
- DarkSpan, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1I actually liked the Buren's idea. The horse is too realist for my taste.
- sammydeath, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1gravesend represent
- kerracked, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1"In fact, I think it may be a moth."
- Elliuotatar, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2Why don't they just build a tiny horse on a pedestal and tell people to stand just so, so that it appears to be huge when silhouetted against those lovely power lines.
- plingboot, on 05/09/2008, -2/+4ffs you sound like an eldery daily mail reader. 2mil is nothing. Why not build a ***** giant horse if they want to.
- crisrose, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3It's called "Watling Street" not "Wapping Street".
"The Anglo-Saxons named it Wæcelinga Stræt which developed into the modern Watling Street." - plingboot, on 05/09/2008, -3/+4would you like to suggest another massive public roadside sculpture to compare it to?
The angel of the north has really captured the public's imagination and is a well loved landmark / icon. Well worth the money imo. They'd do well if whatever they knock up was half as succesfull. - sammydeath, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1i live in gravesend, right next to ebbsfleet and we have got a brand new eurostar terminal and bluewater shopping center, which both look and work awesome. A big horse is totally pointless and not even art. All the submissions are complete *****. £2 million could be alot better spent round this way...
- mal1964, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1And with the Island?
Sarcasm/ - mickstephenson, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2Like it is pure chance that it is going to over twice the size?
- citydragon, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2Because if it's paid for by tax, it's not 'their' money, it's OURS, and if you think two million is nothing, why don't you volunteer to privately fund the project?
- citydragon, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Perhaps a giant white elephant is more appropraite.
- antdude, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Um, you would have to be closed to the horse and you would probably be bucked. ;)
- DarkSpan, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Actually loads of people in the North East hated the 'Angel of the North' when it first went up.
- LingNoi, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1I'm going to express my artist side and send them the "waste of money" message but breaking it up after it's built.
- RubineBoy, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2A field of horses?
- ixid, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Woad rage?
- bosssmiley, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2How tacky. And nothing the Celts didn't do first and better. :-|
- mickstephenson, on 05/09/2008, -4/+4Funny how it has to be compared in size to the Angel of the North, like it is a competition that southerners have to win, Pathetic.
- mtwoffice, on 03/01/2009, -0/+0Just wondering if this was realy done now
http://www.vera-fuerst.de - WinMacLin, on 05/09/2008, -4/+4What a waste of money. £2m on a oversized horse structure, who is paying for this monstrosity? I'm going to guess the tax payers?
- WinMacLin, on 06/05/2008, -1/+1Plingboot: I don't read the Daily Mail.
And your a moron. - mal1964, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1That's what she said.
- zanyjim, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1Well the horse will get a unicorn and make it 65 metres!
- zadadka, on 05/09/2008, -3/+2Of course there is....with "always" being the operative word.
But hey, if you guys think "art and non essential" is a more worthwhile beneficiary than real people needing real help, who am I to question individuals' moral fibre and the state of society today?
I also think paying millions of pounds to and for footballers (in soccer) is obscene, but I guess that falls in the same category from your perspective, huh? -
