- sparr, on 07/11/2009, -0/+23That's more kirigami. For non-purists, a little cutting is ok in origami, but origami is all about the folding. Those models are almost entirely cut to shape.
- socivitus, on 07/10/2009, -0/+16It looks like Minas Tirith + Emerald City.
- MAKEAMOVE, on 07/11/2009, -1/+11must...not...light...match...
- Antialias, on 07/11/2009, -0/+10Not that I doubt his intention to burn it down but saying that seems like a good way to get publicity and maybe get someone to buy it from him to stop its destruction?
- IsDancing, on 07/11/2009, -0/+8It's great to see artists who show determination and pride in their work, but do not let it absolutely consume them.
I admire his intentions to burn it down. - elitedw, on 07/11/2009, -1/+8Talk about Achievement Unlocked... god damn
- sooperdooper, on 07/11/2009, -0/+6"I am devoted while I am working on my projects but I quickly lose interest when I complete them."
"When the exhibition is over I will burn the castle. I thought I could see it rising up from the ashes if I took a video and played it backwards." - Hoogs, on 07/11/2009, -0/+6It actually says he plans on burning it down...
- mbelrose, on 07/11/2009, -0/+5It's a lot more constructive than what a lot of people do after failing exams.
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -1/+4he's really gifted. Any reason why he wants to burn it?
- mathleet, on 07/11/2009, -2/+5He's burning it down. Why?
- nick041, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3As a fan of origami that is ***** amazing! Damn I wish I could do that!
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3Lol...***** this thing! it took me four years to build! im gonna ***** burn it!!
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3"When the exhibition is over I will burn the castle. I thought I could see it rising up from the ashes if I took a video and played it backwards"
At first, like most people, I was wondering why he wanted to burn it, but the idea of rewinding a video to see the city rise from the ashes is pretty cool : ) - inactive, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3Origami made out of paper?....... no
- zagatbuzz, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Extremely impressive!
- bghs2003, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2He broke the rules of origami; therefore what he did is worthless, unimpressive crap.
/s - infinitexx, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2Well, like sparr said above, its not really true origami either, not that it isn't incredibly impressive either way.
- kconnors, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2got a match?
- 88dkanor, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2NO DON'T OPEN THE WINDOW!
- piggyphish, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2How many papercuts do you think he got making that?
- thecoolestguy, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2Why don't they make a real city that looks that nice?
- GhostInAShell, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2If I failed entrance exams three times, I'm not so sure I'd spend my free time building paper cities.
BUT I'm glad he did. Awesome art. - WestDC, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2I'd like to see him make Rapture and then actually submerge it in water.
- arctanb, on 07/22/2009, -0/+2lots of paper ... lots of light bulbs ... fire ...?
- tonychenyj, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2It's so awesome and creative artwork.
- kanojo1969, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2what handsofnod said, and it's baggage now, if he keeps it he will be known as the origami city guy until he does something more noteworthy, which may be never.
Getting rid of it shows a very zen outlook on life. - ChileanGoD, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2Origami = ONE CONTINUOUS folded piece of paper.
No exceptions. - thathappycat, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2At least do it in style. Put Godzilla in there to tear it down.
- HandsOfNod, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2I bet he's sick of it by now and has nowhere to put it.
- tgc1, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2Damn that is impressive! I hope he doesn't burn it down.
- detcade, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1+ something out of I Spy
- PacGamer, on 07/11/2009, -2/+3"|||Origami city|||: model crafted entirely |||from paper|||"
"An |||origami||| artist from Japan, Wataru Ito, has spent four years crafting an incredible model city |||from paper|||"
Of course the model was made from paper...VVV
Definition of origami: "the Japanese art or process of folding squares of paper into representational shapes" - Spoonicus, on 07/11/2009, -1/+2NOT ORIGAMI
- floronicman, on 07/11/2009, -1/+2Its got nothing on the Jell-O San Fransisco
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Duuuuude.
I'm sure artists don't come to the drive thru and tell you how to do YOUR job.
Don't be jealous. - CherubimArts, on 07/26/2009, -0/+1gorgeous! talk about intricate work!
- Decipi, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Imp of the perverse.
- kanojo1969, on 07/11/2009, -0/+0I'm not sure that it's all cut to shape. There are origami techniques for producing spires, tubes, cylinders etcetera, squinting at it close up it looks to me like it could be proper origami for the most part.
If you look at the last photo in the series, he has had to cut it right down the middle for transporting, so there's one defnite cut. There aren't really enough close-up shots to tell us about the individual buildings. If it took him 4 years, he's had time to do it right. - Pinkertinkle, on 07/11/2009, -2/+2too bad he didnt do smth useful with his time
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -0/+0damn, i am a cynic but even i didn't think of that. you might be right that he is trying to find a buyer.
- whoreable, on 07/11/2009, -2/+2Origami from Japan? It's more likely than you think.
- lunachique, on 07/11/2009, -2/+2Reminds me of that Siouxsie and the Banshees song..
But ohh, oh your city lies in dust, my friend
Ohh, on your city lies in dust, my friend
Your city lies in dust.
