- swmbuk, on 05/31/2009, -0/+17Wow, this made me think a lot. The Internet is such a great thing, I bet no one 20 years ago could possibly imagine even a homeless person using it. It's also made me think not to just stereotype these guys as drug addicts, the last thing you would think when you see them is philosopher but clearly I was wrong.
- atlasdugged, on 05/30/2009, -4/+16This is a very big deal...maybe there is a solution to homelessness in here somewhere...
- itsthemechanic, on 05/31/2009, -1/+12Homeless people are only online until they get their laptops jacked. Happened to me. Having a home means having real physical security for your toys.
- inactive, on 05/31/2009, -0/+11I work in a library and we get a few regular homeless people coming in each night to use the internet. There's one guy named John who comes in and uses the computers to talk to his son in Hawaii and manage his myspace and youtube. He's kind of a philosopher/musician, with a definite eccentric edge. He's harmless, but he loves to talk about his ideas. One of the students complained that John was talking to him and it made him uncomfortable. John got banned from the library for one week. A librarian encouraged us to file any complaints so that he might get permanently banned. All he wants is an outlet to be heard. I'm not saying what he has to say is genius, but it's interesting viewing things from such a foreign perspective.

- inactive, on 05/31/2009, -0/+9They probably just use it to keep track of bills and email....right! The homeless people need their internet porn too!
- JaredMonkey, on 05/31/2009, -0/+9Homeless ingenuity. 16 hours of battery life by using an evaporative water cooling setup.,,,and by that I mean a laptop set on a damp rag, Nice.
- Caligatio, on 05/31/2009, -0/+9Did the homeless guy say he gets movies off Netflix? Seriously?

"you too have the mental capacity to flip burgers at McDonalds. "
It's not uncommon for McDonalds in economically depressed areas and during recessions to sometimes receive upwards of 100 job applicants a week. - MichaelCorleone, on 05/31/2009, -5/+13I'm sorry, but spending $25 for a premium flickr account, when you can spend that money on resume writing materials or clothes for a job interview, is asinine. If you have the brains to make a page about learning the Chinese language, you too have the mental capacity to flip burgers at McDonalds. Homeless shelters are a necessary thing of this world, but they aren't meant to be abused by the people who have the ability to leave them and choose not to.
- govsucks, on 05/31/2009, -5/+12Internet becomes a right in 3...2...1...
It amazes me that someone can't seem to put a roof over their head but they CAN find time to surf the internet. - inactive, on 05/31/2009, -0/+6Here's a video of him. Chill guy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhbFtBDaeiQ - ebennerdotcom, on 06/01/2009, -0/+5There are many tech nomads who live essentially homeless . . . living in short term rentals, or airstream trailers.
Having a "home" is over-rated. The Internet makes possible a new kind of gypsy, new nomads.
It's hard to believe the callousness of some of the comments here. Being ingenious about your living expenses lets you work at ***** jobs less, or never. If you choose to be a wage slave, your choice, and you're the fool. Some of the homeless would rather live in a tent than be a slave. Others are just between jobs, or mentally ill, or developmentally disabled. The social welfare system in this country is in the crapper - it is not possible to help all the people who need help. They end up on the street as a result. - merimeet, on 05/31/2009, -0/+5I wonder if the homeless would have better luck selling their stuff on ebay than on the street corners. You never know..
- 1longtime, on 05/31/2009, -0/+4The heart is where the blood is.
- phoenix2330, on 05/31/2009, -2/+6agreed harsh reality, i know times are though but they're not the only ones, if they'd keep on looking they'd find a job....They've just gotten so comfortable living off our hard earned money
- TSK05, on 05/31/2009, -0/+3"amateur philosopher". Hmm, wonder what that entails.
From some other site: "Supportive housing is crucial as about half of all homeless adults have problems with alcohol and one third with other drugs" - bigplrbear, on 05/31/2009, -1/+4If there's any place to be homeless, it would be San Francisco. I'm not saying that being homeless is great or anything, but with its (relatively) advanced public transportation system, free wifi almost everywhere, and the general culture, it's a great place to be homeless compared to most places in California, or even the U.S.
- morepowerr, on 05/31/2009, -1/+3I don't know about bigger city but in smaller one like mine it is not uncommon to to have homeless on the net at the library. Some even have there own gear. I have now some of them a will and they use old psp 'es and the like to check there mail. But then old psp and cheap tracfone's are common here among the poor and the homeless. To bad they don't make a tracfone with wifi in it. :(
- mksmothers, on 05/31/2009, -0/+2Amateur philosopher is homeless code for mentally ill.
- shafoplata, on 05/31/2009, -0/+2I know the guy is homeless but he's still need ways to keep his sanity and remind himself he's human right? I'm not debating whether its frivolous because I do agree that it is, but on the other hand, I can understand completely because it is a form of happiness for him.
- DiggsOnlyJew, on 05/31/2009, -1/+3There always has been a solution, it's called a job.
- toyrifle1, on 05/31/2009, -2/+3Home is where the heart is.
- Peko, on 05/31/2009, -0/+1I don't see how drug addict is mutually exclusive with being wired.
- Twinnie, on 05/31/2009, -0/+1Friend request sent.
- Tarl, on 05/31/2009, -0/+1A homeless person and hardly any, if any, business executives thought anything of the internet 20 years ago.
- cwg1960, on 05/31/2009, -1/+2Colorado Springs: go to the downtown branch of the ppld system and you will find numerous homeless people inside. Some just there to have a place to sit out of the elements, others making use of the internet,or just there because there is nowhere else to go.
- Atmandk, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1Phred Dvorak? Sweet.
- , on 05/31/2009, -0/+1lol Lyle is crazy man.
- Kevin108, on 05/31/2009, -7/+7Okay, so the homeless have free food, free shelter, free internet... Free to them anyway. We taxpayers are footing the bill for most of this stuff. At what point do we stop calling them homeless and just call them leeches?
- ouivalerie, on 06/04/2009, -0/+0there's a lot of drunks and drug addicts on the streets, and sex addicts and weirdo's with a lot of lies, fly by nights, as far as people go, the homeless have burnt their bridges, and some on purpose, got quite sick of indoor city apartments with high rent and there's fresher air outside and it's easier to get up in the morning and the neighbors don't gossip about you as much as they are glad to get away being scared the homeless will beg. People have a push for better person's making homeless the worst of the bad. But back in the days there weren't homeless stigma. Bums weren't so scary most of the time, at least the known one's in the city. They could even clean up and be accepted again, and they slept outside in safety from the police being out to round them up and herd them through the jails for camping in the city. In the US it's known around the world, well known that the the people in the US are "terrified of the poor".
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -0/+0I am trying to do just this. It turns out you have to make some money to stay alive and well. Ideas? Please?!
- ouivalerie, on 06/03/2009, -0/+0what is homelessness? roof over the head people are homeless far far far more than you see in the streets looking filthy. those people are ambulatory, and have mobility assets. most people have to play sick to keep income coming in (within the poor category). that's because people are so wicked and they want to avoid the stigma of being filthy and homeless, but too many are kicked down, relatively speaking. Unless that is you want to create a better more ethical less stupid race of humans. right now it's not their fault. for their level of intelligence they need housing accordingly. Take for instance what they DON'T NEED AWAY. they don't need walls (they would misuse sex). they don't need electricity hidden behind the walls (they don't learn), they only need to drive go carts and golf carts, they DON'T NEED automobiles that are more trouble and expense than they are worth because it's a mystery what makes it all work. They DON'T NEED soda pop that makes them sick, THEY DO NEED some land to farm and they DON'T NEED to eat animals but allowing this is making them consciousless.......
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -0/+0Most homeless looking people I see in libraries are usually trying to look at pron without getting caught
- jimboredford, on 05/31/2009, -1/+0no social phenomena here-only starched shelter sheets.
- mksmothers, on 05/31/2009, -3/+2If someone wants to be homeless, let them. If you want to encourage homelessness, give them shelter and food at no expense to them. Give them internet access and allow them to stink up the public libraries. Homeless shelters are the leading causes of homelessness in large towns. Its amazin what happens when you close those things down, the homeless go to the next town that promotes failure.
