But it also helps to engage students in competing against each other, thus overall students get good percentage due to this competition.

Although I'd say it has something to do with the proportion of male to female English teachers. Pretty much all of my English teachers were women. The only two I thought were good teachers were the two men. I'm not saying women are bad teachers, I'm saying there is probably a bias. This bias is not present in math and science because there are so many male math and science teachers and because there is a lot less room for the teacher's own interpretation (and therefore bias) to invade math. 1+1=2, but you can argue that Catcher in the Rye means a vast number of things.

As such, boys probably do worse in English while in mixed classrooms because they assume they're at a natural disadvantage against girls, just like why girls do worse in math and science when they're in the same situation.

- Quisquis, on 04/21/2009, -0/+2I'll agree with that. I never cared to pay attention in english/grammar class, but I've read voraciously all my life and as a result I've always had a large vocabulary and a decent speech pattern.
