- dystra, on 07/13/2009, -1/+4670% of my mail is junk, reduce that.
- spriggig, on 07/13/2009, -1/+43I don't think her packages would have fit in a mailbox.
- zacharywoods, on 07/13/2009, -3/+27Letters are a dying breed, soon they'll only be in history books. Electronic history books of course.
- djskyler, on 07/13/2009, -3/+27Upper management in the Postal Service have been looking for ways to cut back on the manual laborers. They feel the wages spent on maintaining workers cut into their end-of-year bonuses.
- drmangrum, on 07/13/2009, -1/+21It's that junk mail that keeps the USPS running.
- pingpants, on 07/13/2009, -1/+21Me too. I had one of those, "I'm SURE it was here...? I mean, I think it was here...," moments.
- senorboombino, on 07/13/2009, -0/+17I know they've been talking about taking away Saturday delivery as well...wonder when that will finally take place.
- Trick07, on 07/13/2009, -1/+15So the USPS is losing money because?
Surely its not because they have to deliver a bunch of junk mail that costs far less than 1st class mail, right? - Vidalia, on 07/13/2009, -1/+14The one on my corner is gone. I tried to mail something in it on Friday!
- jaybudzik, on 07/13/2009, -0/+13Seems like this disproportionately affects the elderly. But what happened to the practice of putting the flag up on your box and having the mail delivery person pick up your outgoing mail?
- rkn5555, on 07/13/2009, -0/+13any mailbox you receive mail in... you can put outgoing mail into (netflix too) and the post office must take it for you. it doesnt have to have a flag on it either. if you notice your carrier doesnt do it at first. just leave them a kind note.
- janjamm, on 07/13/2009, -2/+14I agree. I think the number of deliveries should be reduced. Forget Saturday, maybe even Wednesday. And somehow reduce all that crap junk mail. Really, I get few pieces of REAL mail. It seems to me that the postal service is basically working for the junk mailers. Charge them more. Either they will find another way to communicate, cut down on the blanket mailings, or pay for the service. We shouldn't be subsidizing the very junk we don't want.
- howdareyou, on 07/13/2009, -2/+12Up here in Canada we have mail delivery 5 days a week. In my 27 years of life on this planet I've never wished for mail delivery on a Saturday.
- Devrdander, on 07/13/2009, -0/+9the only thing I get in the mail that I care about now is Netflix, and it would suck a bit to lose Saturday delivery...
- beachtrader, on 07/13/2009, -0/+9And that junk mail is all profit for the USPS.
- megaton, on 07/13/2009, -1/+10You do realize we have the most effective postal service on the face of this planet?
Not bad for a government-run monopoly... - Dignan666, on 07/13/2009, -1/+9If it wasn't for netflix, I'd say cut delivery down to twice a week. But i need my netflix.
- beachtrader, on 07/13/2009, -0/+8A lot of the people here say they pay all their bills online. Well then most of those must not be home owners. Because there are a lot of bills which are required for home ownership but you can't pay online. And several of the ones you can pay online *CHARGE* you an extra fee to have online processing--you read that right: add $5 each bill to pay the bill online. (And this is in a major suburb of a top ten city in the US. And before you say don't use them, its a utility companies, the ones in the area you have to use). Unfortunately, not everything or everyone is online yet. It's getting there, but in reality the world is still slow.
- drmangrum, on 07/13/2009, -2/+10They need to go with an odd-even day delivery. Most people don't need a letter THAT day. You could cut out probably a 3rd of the labor if they put restrictions on unsolicited (marked, To Resident) mail and did every other day delivery.
- rocknog, on 07/13/2009, -0/+7Well, as long as I can't email my rent check, they better not shut down completely.
- KublaiKhan, on 07/13/2009, -0/+6I have tried to do my own small part to revive this anachronistic letter-writing thing, but to little effect. People just don't seem to know what to do with themselves when they have a hard-copy letter in their hands rather than an e-mail. It comes across as strange rather than quaint or charming.
- gnixon70, on 07/13/2009, -0/+6and has been for years
- faskippy, on 07/13/2009, -0/+6FFS. The Postal service is a NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION. IT DOES NOT USE TAX DOLLARS. IT OPERATES SOLELY ON REVENUE FROM POSTAGE SALES.
How the ***** don't people (who think they know about the usps) know this????? - sjbdallas, on 07/13/2009, -0/+6I'm pretty sure most banks will issue the check and mail it for you with their bill pay system. Anything that's not electronically transferrable gets printed and mailed.
- Trick07, on 07/13/2009, -1/+6They removed the mailbox here at my college where I work. Now I have to drive over to the PO (2 miles out of my way) to drop off my Netflix... I guess it's time to find a box close to my home.
- faskippy, on 07/13/2009, -0/+5Geez. Why doesn't she just give the stuff to her letter carrier when they drop off her mail every day? ANYONE who gets mail delivery can give their outgoing mail to the carrier, or pin the outgoing letter, etc. to the mailbox, or put it inside and raise the flag. If your area uses "cluster boxes" for delivery, then just open the door and place the letter inside where the carrier can see the stamp, or put a sticky note that says "outgoing" on the front so they'll see it.
The Post Office is sorta "quasi" government. NO TAX DOLLARS go to fund their services. They operate solely on revenue from postage. No money comes in from other government sources when they do poorly, but if they do well and make a profit, anything above operating costs get relinquished to the government.
They do suck, though. They are constantly harrassing employees, are very militaristic in their management style, and they reward it. Managers and Postmasters get big bonuses for, basically, treating people like *****. They consider profit to be "use it or lose it" money, so they give big bonuses, redecorate their own offices, arrange "conferences", etc. to make sure it gets absorbed. The U S P S is one of those things that seem like a dinosaur, but you still need. I have wished to hell several times that it would be privatized, but trust me, though it's not perfect where operations are concerned, privatization would be such a major ***** that the lawsuits and complaints would go on for decades. You would wish you had left well enough alone. - anillop, on 07/13/2009, -1/+6You do realise that the Post office doesn't cost you any tax money, they pay for them selves.
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+5Really? If it's within the continental US, USPS always beats FedEX for me, and UPS beats 'em both!
- DarkMatter911, on 07/13/2009, -1/+5Nothing worth while ever arrives on Saturday. It is always sales papers and junk mail.
- drmangrum, on 07/13/2009, -1/+5What part of cut a 3rd of the labor didn't you get? Each carrier would have 2 routes. One route for Monday, Wednesday, Friday. A second route for Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.
You wouldn't need junk mail to subsidize other deliveries if you could cut out a 3rd of the labor force, especially when that labor force is largely delivering junk - malman4, on 07/13/2009, -2/+6You aren't subsidising the junk you get. The Postal service is not subsidised by the government. You pay for it when you use it. Believe it or not businesses do depend on Saturday mail service, and so might you if you were expecting a check or important paper. You might see it better when you move away from your parents.
- methdwman3, on 07/13/2009, -1/+5And that GREEDY postal service gave out bonuses last year!
- nonymous666, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3Maybe the USPS wouldn't have so many expenses if they didn't have so many tons of junk mail to handle.
- forcedfx, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3Yeah, it's cheaper for me to mail my gas payment than to pay it online. Also, my electric company charges six bucks to pay through EFT! And here, I am excited because my mortgage loan just got sold to BoA and I can finally pay it online.
- DangerCollie, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3Like drmangrum suggested, either odd/even or I could see the day they stopped delivery to the door all together. Not for a long time, but I could see it happening.
All we get is bills and junk mail anyway. The bills I pay electronically and could live without the junk mail. - Devrdander, on 07/13/2009, -1/+4Well it does have a bit of competition from a few small players, like FedEx and UPS...
- rkn5555, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3http://www.usps.com/pickup/
- Myztry, on 07/13/2009, -1/+4Garbage collections are weekly in my area (AU) but recycling is lower volume and less 'perishable' so is collected fortnightly. One part of town is odd weeks and the other part is even.
- rdoger6424, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3We don't subsidize *****. The junk mail is the USPS's main source of income.
- sjbdallas, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3Yeah since it's such a hassle to have a guy come to your house every day, pick up your letters, then transport them across the country for 45 cents a pop.
- rdoger6424, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3I use snail mail all the time. I get most of my electronics from Hong Kong via ebay, and they ship via the post system there. So I get packages from the post office all the time.
- lex0nyc, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3That's what she said.
- faskippy, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3And where does your college's outgoing mail sit while waiting for pickup? You do know there is a letter carrier coming, no? And if they use a P.O. box, that means they still have to go to the PO for pickup. Why not just put it in the outgoing mail?
- FXNGLAS, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3I've been noticing drop off boxes disappearing for quite some time now. I admit I never really used it, as the post office is only about a mile away.
- Teh1337Pirate, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3What about the rest of your mail that isn't bills or junk mail?
- KSUdesigner, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2"Anything that's not electronically transferrable gets printed and mailed."
And if the USPS shuts down, then what? I doubt most landlords give you any way to do an electronic transfer, so if the USPS shuts down he's still screwed. - Barackalypse, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Why bother with a mailbox, the Postal Carrier that comes to your house 6 days a week will also take any mail you need delivered.
- NBMedia, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Apparently, mailboxes are going the way of the payphone.
- Dignan666, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2I like my movies in 1080p. Streaming just doesn't cut it yet.
- gl77, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2they started doing this in jacksonville a couple years ago, aside from the post office, you'd be hard-pressed to find any blue public mailboxes anywhere here.
