- idavidtang, on 06/25/2008, -1/+27Having a ridiculously rich person buying an expensive painting does not defy the global economic downturn.
- chrissku, on 06/25/2008, -0/+13I told myself I wouldn't pay a dime over 75 million.
- dedmond29, on 06/25/2008, -0/+12Nice way to diversify your investment portfolio
- bxblox, on 06/25/2008, -1/+11 Global economic downturn doesn't apply. Money isn't disappearing. Someone has it, and they're buying paintings.
- Hefelumpman, on 06/25/2008, -0/+9I suspect it's because they also have a room that's filled with furniture made out of gold, but has a blank wall.
- inactive, on 06/25/2008, -2/+11YOU NEED TO DIVERSIFY YOUR BONDS, *****
- dafragsta, on 06/25/2008, -0/+9I can't! I'm baroque!
- leftyslament, on 06/25/2008, -1/+7Monet Shot?
- cshel, on 06/25/2008, -1/+7I've always loved Monet. Would be nice to have the money to buy a real one, but posters work just fine for me :)
- MattB123, on 06/25/2008, -0/+6Why not? I bet the buyer had > $80M.
- drmangrum, on 06/25/2008, -0/+5Old Money or stepping on little people ( and i don't mean midgets ).
- inactive, on 06/25/2008, -1/+6Good stuff.
I have become a serious art collector in the last year. Have never spent more than 400$ for an original piece, most pieces I buy for much less. All are from emerging artist I find on art blogs, and I deal directly with them and skip the galleries. Even if the stuff never really appreciates in much value having original art hanging in the apartment is inspiring. - filefly, on 06/25/2008, -0/+4At first I thought, "I can't believe anyone had Degaulle to post this" -- but then I reasoned, what did they have Toulouse?
- thegreenspanput, on 06/25/2008, -3/+7I love Monet, but for me nothing beats Degas
never understood the Picasso thing - hollyminkowski, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3Degas truly loved ballerinas...spent his life painting them...beautiful work :-)
http://image46.webshots.com/47/7/4/48/235070448004 ... - arjie, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3Money's water lilies are really beautiful, and the story of how the changes in his eyesight affected his painting is damn interesting.
Unbelievable that people have that much money to spend on a work of art, though. - cadmiumpaint, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3think about what 80 million can buy...
a crappy romantic comedy starring ashton kutcher
the services of an athelete for a few seasons
an average shopping mall
a couple of bombs
a niche-y upstart web site that will prob fade away into obscurity
or
the opportunity to preserve and own a piece of fine art that helped to shape human culture.
granted its alot of money but its noble in its own way...preserving culture. - Iztikeit, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3It's called an investment. That painting will grow in value until the end of time most likely.
- idavidtang, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3Makes sense since the salary of CEO's and other high positioning officers have increased dramatically over the last couple of years, not to mention businesses like big oil companies reporting record profits.
I agree to what my old professor said a couple of years ago, the middle class is dwindling and the gap between the poor and the rich is becoming bigger. - xShad0w, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3YAY, global economic downturn but people still have ridiculous amounts of money to spend on paintings!
- catkillcurious, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3Make Monet, Monet! Make Monet, Monet, Monet!
- inactive, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3Good God...
you know what this means?
We are definitely in a recession! - tdishman, on 06/25/2008, -1/+4What this article doesn't say is that the painting was sold to pay the (presumably) inheritance or estate taxes created with the former owner passed away in February.
- cadmiumpaint, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3better than spending 80 million on a few bombs.
- hollyminkowski, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2Monet just loved water lilies...here is another of his beautiful water lilies paintings.
http://www.alanbeangallery.com/WaterLillies.jpg - opticwind, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2Yeah, how dare he have more money than you! Although I'm sure the homeless people wonder about that $3 bottle of water you got at Starbucks.
- tripledjr, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2$
- diggjcarp, on 06/25/2008, -1/+3Articles like this which seem to pop up more and more serve as small reminders that yes, in fact, the rich have gotten a lot richer.
- izackcarson, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2that is true. i am positive a more constructive use could be found though. even if the money were to stay just in art, how many murals could be painted for that? how many statues could be created? it's just obscene to see how much money is wasted without a second thought.
- ferrell, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2WOW.
A very similar painting sold for only $16.8 million in 2004.
http://thecityreview.com/s04simp1.html - RudeTurnip, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2NPR had an interesting take on art sales this morning. They noted that high end art sales like this one are just as strong as ever, while lower end sales ($2,000 to about $1 million) are taking a hit. Therefore, on a much larger dollar scale, you can see this as a sign of the "super wealthy" doing just fine or getting wealthier, while the "rich" slalom back toward the middle class.
- opticwind, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2It's sad the brilliance here goes undetected.
- opticwind, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2Being rich doesn't make you a bad person.
- opticwind, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2The brilliant irony of middle-income people criticizing the rich for buying art for too much money? Ask a homeless guy what he thinks about that $2500 gaming rig you bought, or the $3 bottle of water in a country where water is free.
- doktorrocket, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2FTA: "Monet created his water garden in Giverny, France by rerouting a river. He selected different hybrids of water lilies in an effort to get as many different colored flowers as possible, deliberately creating the garden as a motif for his paintings."
I condemn his disrupting of wetlands and his reckless introduction of genetically modified non-native hybrid lilies into the delicate habitat of the.......
J/K :) - ziv36, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2'that defy the global economic downturn'. Not... the rich are just getting richer...
- inactive, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2you are comparing apples to oranges here my friend. art is subjective and has different meaning to each individual. also, each artist comes from a different period and paints in a different style. in order to understand the work of these artist, you must look at their place in history and see how they blazed their own trail and paved the way for future generations. looking at the same type of art day after can get very boring. it's like having only one choice of car and changing the colors now and then. you only have a choice of a red mini-van, a blue mini-van, and a green mini-van. when something new comes along like a mustang for example, then things get a little more exciting!
- thrallie, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2Thanks to my college humanities class I understood this joke.
- cam0man, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2never understood the picasso thing? try taking a look at his earlier works and following the progressions he made for the era. News flash, art like this doesn't sell for $80 million because of what it looks like, you can comission a reproduction from any art bum for a few dollars. It's what these artists did to the art world through their expressions. Picasso was able to paint realistically, he just transistioned into the abstract, something that basically defied all the rules and conventions.
Monet's impressionistic work was revolutionary and that's why he's famous. Any time art comes up on digg there's basically an overflow of know-it-alls who say 'this is stupid, I COULD PAINT THAT' and 'this is stupid, it's not art'. You may even be right criticizing some art as not being art, you buy this to own a piece of history. - inactive, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1And most amazingly Degas never attended a ballet or ballet rehearsal (true!). Still, Cezanne > Degas.
- Nescirian, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1I came to this submission just to make these two jokes.
Well played, alphgeek and dafragsta. Well played. - JohnP, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1What kind of stuff have you bought? $400 isnt much at all, even for a basic drawing.
- cam0man, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1only 1 thing better than having original art you bought, having original art you created yourself. makes for great conversation pieces....
- ICSU, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1Impressionism is awesome.
- ejpusa, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1OK, let me explain a bit. This is how you move MONEY between countries. Ok, it's not stamps (that's even better), but you can buy a painting in NYC tonight, bring it over to Paris tomorrow, and sell it on the spot. THIS IS why the art market is soaring. The EASIEST way in the world (except rare stamps) to move big bucks around the world.
Hey, I love art too! :-) - bundwallah, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1Jeez! This is like the 3rd post from you shilling for digitalfuntown. Do you work there?? At least be more creative in the way you're trying to make your post relevant to the subject and its' relation to the link.
- opticwind, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1The context is what makes it important.
