- lamejoketeller, on 03/04/2009, -4/+52When you smoke pot it's always an eye-opener to look at technology.
"Dude...you just shot someone in a fictional universe that we've never met, who might live in japan or something, and we both saw it happen in a ***** light box. Whoaahhh." - aTroll, on 03/04/2009, -10/+50This was front paged less than a month ago. Way to go digg. Variety at its best!
Btw, tech is only okay these days. Internet speed is incredibly slow here in America and look at the space shuttle. Decades with the same old crap. Yea, the concept is amazing, but come on guys. We had some of this stuff for a long time, and we should be moving further ahead at a faster rate as the years go by. That's how tech evolves.
We can't just stay behind in awe at the concept. We're supposed to build on to the foundation set at the start. - kd420, on 03/04/2009, -12/+52"Are you kidding me? These things would have been incomprehensible science fiction in the year 2000. Today, most people can barely muster the enthusiasm to spend $200 on one. " Very true, I still have a "pay as you go" cellphone. But it is because I don't need or want all those features, they aren't worth $200 + $50/month to me. If we lived in the same mindset as 10 years ago, we would be ecstatic over our 512MB memory computers and would waste our money. As technology improves, so must our standards. Louis was pointing out where we push our expectations too high, the author is aiming far too low.
If we were to widen our scope of amazement to the entire history of civilization, we would become stagnant as a society. No need to invent electricity, candles are "good enough". What some see as ungratefulness (which is a correct assessment sometimes) is often just valid criticism. A plane being late is never intended, and isn't an inherent design flaw so the criticism is pointless and ungrateful. Whining because the airplane's internet is broken does nothing, the techs probably now there are still bugs to fix and are working on it. In these cases the complaining is pointless, and the author is correct. Saying the iPhone needs copy+paste is a valid point because it CAN be implemented (and should be easy) but just has been left out for unknown reasons. I see this more as constructive criticism rather than unhappy lamenting over the sorry state of technology. - recruz, on 03/04/2009, -6/+35japan has all this stuff and then some ... *sigh* ... America is greedy and likes to bleed out as much money as possible before releasing the best of the best
Why create an 8-megapixel camera-phone, when we can sell a 1.3MP camera-phone first, then a 2MP camera-phone, then a 3MP camera-phone, then a 5MP camera-phone, then a 5MP camera-phone with flash, then a 5MP camera-phone with flash and digital zoom, then a 5MP camera-phone with flash and real zoom, then an 8MP camera-phone, then an 8mp camera-phone with flash, then ... *****' a man- i am on the wrong end of capitalism ... *sigh again* - mark076h, on 03/04/2009, -5/+31My iPhone is amazing, but I am unhappy it does not have copy and paste, MMS, better turn by turn GPS, faster data connection, front facing video camera for video chat, longer battery life etc etc...
- eviljelly, on 03/04/2009, -4/+28This was front paged less than a week ago! :-D
- inactive, on 03/04/2009, -9/+32Dugg you down, to show you what it's like in the real world. Also I'm a bitter, bitter man stuck in a cubicle at the moment. When do I get to see the sailboat?
- mywhitenoise, on 03/04/2009, -2/+24^dude, how long did that take you to come up with and type?
Another reason I hate technology: Morons can't sense sarcasm online. - mywhitenoise, on 03/04/2009, -5/+26Personally, despite owning an HDTV and a bunch of other tech *****, I wish we were living like we were in the 70's, 80's, and early 90's. Back before the stupid facebook/twitter *****, and all the retarded internet memes infecting the media and society.
- l800LEMMINGS, on 03/04/2009, -0/+20i think this talk on ted best explains it http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/dan_gilbert_ask ...
- Bloodwine, on 03/04/2009, -1/+21I think all this technology is making people less and less social and feel more withdrawn. On top of it all, it has really sped up our lives.
During the major winter ice storm this year (took out power through a lot of the midsouth) I was without power for 5 days. I passed the time by reading books and other activities that did not require power. By the time my power came back on 5 days later, I felt relaxed and rejuvenated. There were times I just sat in the silence and heard the birds cheeping outside. During the day I would go outside and would converse with my neighbors (who were also without power). - cookiemonster01, on 03/04/2009, -2/+21also, people these days are too serious
- Vaiper, on 03/04/2009, -0/+18This is EXACTLY how it is and most people don't realize it. They aren't going to sell you a fancy new toy until the warehouse full of the previous model is empty. We can use the iPhone as an example by saying, "why the hell didn't the first generation iPhone have 3G?"
Answer: Because if it did, they wouldn't have anything to upgrade it to. Everything else is software updates. They need a reason to sell you new HARDWARE. - AgentOgre, on 03/04/2009, -1/+18Well my general unhappiness lately is mostly because I'm broke.
- inactive, on 03/04/2009, -1/+17Evermin, I was joking around, except my cubicle is terrible, that part is real.
- staticfire, on 03/04/2009, -0/+15what the ***** are you talking about?
- mugrido, on 03/04/2009, -0/+14You seem unhappy.
- Bloodwine, on 03/04/2009, -0/+13I admit, I am a weak man when it comes to technology. I'm working on it.

- AlmightyCushion, on 03/04/2009, -1/+13I won't be happy until I get my flying, time-travelling delorean.
- Rain12913, on 03/04/2009, -0/+12@wolferz: LOL you failed to sense painfully obvious sarcasm and you're still here trying to sound intelligent and analytical. Just tail between legs, walk away.
- JamesLee007, on 03/04/2009, -0/+12***** thing sucks.
- mywhitenoise, on 03/04/2009, -7/+19I'm not "2 of my friends died" in a car accident because some chick wasn't paying attention on the freeway. She was too busy updating her twitter through texting on her iPhone.
I havent had sex with my girlfriend in 2 years because she's always on her blackberry.
I'm broke because I've updated my HDTV and home audio 3 times in the last year.
Nobody wants to come over and socialize anymore, they'd rather play video games online...does local multiplayer even exist anymore?
and today is Wednesday, the most obnoxious of days, because it is the day when Zero Punctuation posts a new review. - reddcell, on 03/04/2009, -1/+13Are there bad sex-robots? Link please.
- murrdpirate, on 03/04/2009, -0/+11Without technology I would be legally blind and probably dead from chronic bronchitis/pneumonia. If I weren't dead, every day would be a struggle to find food.
It's true that we do a lot of communication now without being face to face, but it lets us get our ***** done fast so we can have free time to explore our humanity or whatever you wanna do. We have so much more time to relax with friends and family and think about things like philosophy. Can you imagine a hunter gatherer taking the time to be like "why am I here"? - inactive, on 03/04/2009, -1/+10Don't confuse speed with progress.
- mrgarci1, on 03/04/2009, -0/+8I've been saying for a few years now that we're living in the future - I'm personally amazed every day by our collective level of technological advancement, and anybody who isn't probably doesn't understand tech very well.
So given that we all live in a sci-fi novel, all that's left to figure out is whether our time is just "the future", or if it's "the start of the dystopian future" - CarStan, on 03/05/2009, -0/+8What? 9000?!
- inactive, on 03/04/2009, -0/+8Not just Japan, the entire rest of the world has all this stuff. and it's relatively cheap too. When the iPhone came out, people outside North American didn't really give a ***** as aside from the pretty awesome touch screen, it was a step BACKWARDS in mobile technology
- zerofoo, on 03/04/2009, -0/+8Technology is amazing, but we've accepted low-quality implementations of amazing science.
I do love my iPhone, but I want to smash it every time it drops a call. Yes, it is better than the Treo I had on Verizon's network in a number of ways, but it still needs to make RELIABLE phone calls.
As a network admin, I see great things every day, and I see shoddy, unreliable things even more often. Backup systems that fail for no reason, slick software that constantly needs patching because the first 5 or 6 versions weren't right, incredibly gigantic hard drives that seem to have an MTBF of 2 weeks....etc.
Personally, I would like to see the pace of new technology slow a little so we can get the bugs out of the current technology before we move on to the next thing.
-ted - inactive, on 03/04/2009, -0/+8My word...a wild internet moron!
- MendotaLee, on 03/04/2009, -0/+8This is exactly what the Unabomber was all about.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Kaczynski - murrdpirate, on 03/04/2009, -0/+7That's true, but I don't think this guy is trying to say we should just be happy with what we have and leave it at that. I think it's good to take a step back every once in a while and just realize how amazing all this ***** is...doesn't mean we can't keep improving it.
- bipolarruledout, on 03/04/2009, -0/+6Far more poignant than most people will ever realize.
- pradaaddict, on 03/04/2009, -0/+6Tech can move faster, it could actually move a lot faster. But the problem is consumer buying power, for all the amazing things we can invent that could simplify our lives by so much it would be completely limited by the number of people willing to buy it because of the cost.
That video MS made of what life and technology will look like in a decade. We could have stuff like that in 5 years if we really tried hard and had the money to develop it. But people wouldn't buy it, the cost would be too prohibitive. The infrastructure would be too expensive for our cheap ass TelCo's to build it and it would move so fast people would complain about needing to upgrade their notebooks, digital wallets, and mobile computers(iPhones) twice a year or more to just keep up.
Technology isn't the problem, people are. People will remain the way we have remained since Man thought "damn, there must be a better way of doing this" We will always be unhappy with what we have, with our station in life, with things out of our locus of control. Its just the way we are. - Hetman, on 03/04/2009, -0/+6That is real relevant to this thread.
- DavidTurnbull, on 03/04/2009, -1/+7WELL GOOD FOR YOU!
- bipolarruledout, on 03/04/2009, -0/+6I love technology; don't get me wrong. The problem is all of this is rooted in consumer culture. Things don't make people truely happy. Consumerism has become an addiction and we all are drawn to it like a drug addict. Humans desire enriching, authentic experiences. On the plus side technology has brought better access to art, music, and human communication and these are the things that really matter.
- StrangeFamous, on 03/04/2009, -0/+6Load the tranq darts, I'll get the net! Quickly now!
- inactive, on 03/05/2009, -0/+6I've always wondered why people say that. "What's stopping you from..."
If people were honest, I think they would realize how futile a suggestion that really is. I'm pretty sure you realize it yourself, and yet you ask anyway. Cigarettes and alcohol aren't the only addictions, yet we continue to think of those as the only "real" addictions.
If you're on digg, I'm willing to bet you sit on the computer at least 4-6 hours a day. Minimum. People don't visit places like digg unless they have that feeling of boredom, and people have been conditioned over time to believe that technology cures boredom. The television is really what did it, and if you look back through the history of TV you will see how the transformation occurred.
Today, everyone is addicted to technology in some form. From senior citizens to young children. If we don't know how to use the internet, we sit in front of the TV all day. We are perhaps the first generation to live completely inside a technology bubble, where the last humans that lived mostly outside and in constant direct contact with nature are dying off. - mrfunktastic, on 03/04/2009, -0/+5Happiness has nothing to do with technology. If you are unhappy, you will be so with or without technology. True happiness comes from within.
Being content with less, or with what you have, has a lot to do with it. - StrangeFamous, on 03/04/2009, -1/+6We're all nobody on the internet.
