    A great article/opinion on the stupid state of contemporary poetry. Poetry now is a pretense to sound deep. You'll find more poetry in the iFart application than most of this stuff. I propose that we should just take a few years off of poetry.

  • PontdePierre, on 03/01/2009, -0/+5There are plenty of good poets still alive and writing: Seamus Heaney, Louise Gluck, Robert Pinsky, Mary Oliver, Adam Zagajewski, Derek Walcott, and Adrienne Rich to name a few. For your own sake, pick up a copy of "Best American Poetry" of any recent year. What if after Shakespeare the world just said, "Well, that's it. No one can write anything new or worthwhile after that". Every generation has its own language and collective psyche.

If William Cullen Bryant could enjoy a reputation as a poet, but then by century's end that reputation could turn, history appears pretty efficient with its scythe. And it will likely offer the same cutting to all these poets and poems being published now.

    There seems to be this echoing paranoia that history is suddenly going to make an exception of the current time. Read David Orr's piece in the NYTimes (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/22/books/review/Orr ... It's the same concern. Yet people still read Emily Dickinson (whose poems took fifty to sixty years to gain canonical status), and people don't read Cullen Bryant's.
