- cpdylan, on 10/15/2009, -0/+14There are plenty of web-series out there that do care about a narrative, camera movement, editing, etc. all the elements that Stone couldn't argue against as to what constitutes making "art" - the budgets are only smaller. Where would he be if he could no longer find financing? It's not all kids jumping into pools. It's not all masturbation. Sometimes it's just about entertaining. The little guys having a distribution platform to find an audience with limited resources. Making a movie that no one will ever see is masturbation.
- kylescousin, on 10/15/2009, -0/+12Actually, Stone may have a point here, although he seems to have expressed it less than graciously.
- cholula, on 10/15/2009, -1/+11My problem with Stone is that he lumps all the schlock on the internet together with all the great stuff on the internet. That would be like if we lumped all his crap movies with all his good ones. Oh yeah, his crap far outnumbers his good stuff.
- jupit, on 10/15/2009, -1/+9To pay this man $75,000 to diss the internet is just stupid. I would of done it for free!
- StevieJanowski, on 10/15/2009, -0/+4$75k wow like he doesn't have enough money in the first place.
- escottberg, on 10/15/2009, -0/+3exactly. it levels the playing field, but if your "art" sucks, no one is going to call it art. plenty of people made crappy films before the internet, they just didn't get to be as wide spread so not as many people could call them crappy
- ssquared22, on 10/15/2009, -1/+4"The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter"
Great use of a Churchill quote to illustrate how it used to work. It's about participation in the medium now and if Ollie isn't hip to that, it stinks. - macmcraeart, on 10/16/2009, -2/+5oliver stone is a ***** badass who gets too little respect as a film maker.
- SigmaEcho, on 10/16/2009, -1/+4Buried for inaccurate, sensationalist, linkbait/diggbait article. He was clearly talking about crappy amateur video that floods the web (i.e. YouTube), something that EVERYONE complains about all the time, even web users. Watch the actual clips and you realize this whole article is just tabloid crap.
BUT the entertainment industry in general needs to stop complaining about the web and start removing restrictions on their content so that it can be easily accessed on set-top boxes so it can be enjoyed on HDTVs, where it belongs. - leamanc, on 10/16/2009, -0/+2Thumbs up, good sir. Stone is way under-rated. He wrote the Oscar-winning screenplay for Midnight Express, which would earn most folks enough respect for a lifetime. Add to that several stone-cold classics that he directed (Platoon, Wall Street, Talk Radio, JFK, Natural Born Killers), some really great flicks (Born on the Fourth of July, The Doors, Nixon, Any Given Sunday) and a few cult favorites (Seizure, The Hand, U-Turn), and anyone should realize that he is one of the greats of our generation.
Yet he doesn't seem to get much love. Maybe that's because of his "conspiracy theorist" persona, but I don't give a ***** about his personal beliefs. He is a great filmmaker. - mrMunchies, on 10/15/2009, -0/+2I like some of Oliver Stone's past work and respect him as a film director. However, he went on a rant about the internet here. It is common for an older generation to frown upon new developments from a younger generation; but it could have been done with a little more class.
- ChestRawkwell, on 10/16/2009, -0/+2I can't believe he's afraid of youtubers:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kt4Go_TKdoE - SuperMoses, on 10/16/2009, -0/+2The author of this article sounds more offended than the audience in the video who were supposedly the people he was offending.
That being said, Oliver Stone makes some good points, but it doesn't mean there will never be a place for movies on the internet. - theNazz, on 10/16/2009, -0/+2I can forgive Stone for The Doors but I cannot forgive Nolan Bushnell for selling off Atari.
A pox on you Nolan Bushnell, a POX! - GrampaNoOp, on 10/16/2009, -0/+1he's had some good things to say in the past, too bad he's gone all nolan bushnell grumpy old white dude... you kids and your new fangled inventions are obviously to blame.
- RachelJTM, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1agreed
- SuperMoses, on 10/16/2009, -0/+1and a movie about masturbation is also art.
- StigNordas, on 10/15/2009, -1/+2Oliver Stone and David Lynch should be banned from the internet. At least they make good movies.
- alexawright, on 10/15/2009, -1/+2I have to agree with Cholula on this point. While the Internet and the its capabilities are still very young some of the content out there is great even if the viewing experience is not.
- andytronic, on 10/16/2009, -0/+1David Lynch rambles a bit, but at least he's not a bitter old crank.
- brianpeiris, on 10/16/2009, -0/+1I don't have a problem with Oliver Stone. He has right to an opinion, even if it's misguided. My problem is with the people in the audience and the host on stage who seem to be massaging his ego because of his status. Someone should at least attempt to educate him.
- max420, on 10/16/2009, -1/+2He is completely out of touch with what's going on online. His opinions are completely invalid in this case, it sounds more like he is talking about the internet from 2000, not 2009
- pbgswd, on 10/16/2009, -1/+1oliver you are a wanker anyways. you also have trashed the printed word and then published your autobiography.
