- Sornos, on 04/28/2008, -68/+809This is just more of the same "non-conformist" junk. Anyone care to tell me why those things are "bad" and "taking my freedom"? The amount a person is free is not determined by his "conformity".
- built2spill, on 04/28/2008, -14/+307Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a ***** big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose a three-piece suite on hire purchase in a range of ***** fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who the ***** you are on Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing ***** junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pissing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, ***** up brats you spawned to replace yourselves. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?
- GoKings, on 04/28/2008, -21/+312People do that stuff for a reason. It leads to a better quality of life. Reminds me of that kid back in high school that thought school was "too conformist" and was restricting his mind. Started getting into psychedelics which "freed his mind from the conformity, and unlocked the jail cell that is society." Then he dropped out of school. I visited home a couple weeks ago, caught him working at ColdStones, and according to an ex-friend of his he still lives with his mom.
- inactive, on 04/28/2008, -19/+237Fine, dont save, dont work, dont get educated, dont be useful and become a homeless bum; then you will have all the freedom in the world!
- meowza, on 04/28/2008, -6/+192Thom Yorke's rejected lines from "Fitter Happier".
- nem0, on 04/28/2008, -15/+167I don't have a job.
I don't have a girlfriend.
I play video games all day.
I have a can of spray paint.
Repeat after me: "I envy people who have a life" - aguitarhero, on 04/28/2008, -13/+161Exactly! How does watching sitcoms limit my freedom in any way? People writing these things never give an alternative. You can criticize how we live, but what do these people want me to do?
Sit at home, let my kids run around, dress poorly, act crazy, walk in the street, stair in to the wall, not think ahead, break the law??
What is the point? How does that better? - doctechnical, on 04/28/2008, -7/+153I'm not free.
I'm expensive. - GramarNatzi, on 04/28/2008, -8/+99None of those things in particular are detrimental to your freedom. The idea of this passage is to point out the pressures put on us by society, the expectation that we should aspire to this 'perfect' ideal, and cast out or look down upon those who do not conform to it. Most people live their lives afraid of being outcast and so are in a way forced to comply. Even the 'non-conformists' are conforming to a particular culture mainly due to peer pressure, which is kind of ironic.
- Sornos, on 04/28/2008, -6/+95You can do those things the "artist" says and question everything. They make no real judgment on thought processes.
And it was Socrates said that "the unexamined life is not worth living" - inactive, on 04/28/2008, -11/+88Aw, I think I might shed a tear and change my life now.
What's wrong about sending my kids to school or saving money for when I'm old? Someone didn't inform this person of how society works. I do agree you should do what makes you happy, but denying your child an education or walking on a pavement so I won't get hit by a car? ***** off. - akkibaba, on 04/28/2008, -6/+80I'm not making a judgment either way, but is it perhaps possible that he's happy exactly where he is? I mean I can't imagine working at minimum wage and living with my parents, but who's to say that your friend doesn't enjoy that life?
- ANT1138, on 04/28/2008, -9/+77As if you're not a lemming as well.
- galeninjapan, on 04/28/2008, -12/+76Poorly written graffiti of a very naive outlook on life doesnt mean *****.
- Stupidumb, on 04/28/2008, -0/+59Choo choo choo choose you.
- PeppermintPig, on 04/28/2008, -7/+63Freedom doesn't mean putting graffiti on other people's property.
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 04/28/2008, -0/+48Freedom is an ice cream cone given after wiping down the toilets.
- Renuvian, on 04/28/2008, -2/+46Pikachu, I choose YOU!
- ANT1138, on 04/28/2008, -7/+49While I agree that's we are pushed in that direction, no one really forces you to live that lifestyle. If you fall into that stereotype, it's no fault but your own.
* I still dugg this this up because I so badly want the old ways to die. - AmICoolNow, on 04/28/2008, -2/+41OK Computer is one of the best albums I've heard.
- NaziHatinChimp, on 04/28/2008, -8/+47That's apparently what people want to do.
- theshizzler, on 04/28/2008, -3/+40I chose a city where the artist would not fear the censor. Where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality. Where the great would not be constrained by the small. And with the sweat of your brow, Rapture can become your city as well.
- db0255, on 04/28/2008, -8/+44OWNED.
- Trichomonas, on 04/28/2008, -2/+37I think it was best summarized in the comments that followed:
Mance Pro User says:
[Sounds like freedom to me!
As opposed to:
"Queue for a possible job, wonder if the kids will ever have an education, wish you could afford some footwear, act as if your every word is being monitored, try to catch some news from anything but the state media, worry you'll never make old age, fear anarchic violence.
Repeat after me: I am free"]
And:
[Work as every human being, send your kids to school or educate them at home if you want, follow fashion only if it conforms to your beliefs, act your definition of "normal" not others definition, don't watch TV because you know its just crap, have your family happily support you in your old age, and obey the law only if it justice.
That is freedom. ]
I prefer the second one. - Aidenf77, on 04/28/2008, -1/+36That's true, I didn't really approach it from that perspective at first. But then that leads me to point out that in many cases, ignorance is bliss. It's easy to be happy when you don't know what you're missing, and happiness doesn't necessarily denote freedom. I dugg your comment, but just wanted to add another viewpoint.
- djqxero, on 04/28/2008, -3/+37It's only after you lose everything that you are free to do anything.
- maxmccabe, on 04/28/2008, -4/+38TRAINSPOTTING FTW!!!!
- Stupidumb, on 04/28/2008, -3/+37Hey man, i don't want to become another mindless clone like the rest of you. You people with education and jobs are all the same. I want to be different, in exactly the same way as the rest of the bums.
- screamthenrun, on 04/28/2008, -9/+41its actually more like "Repeat after me: This is called life."
seriously, stuff is the norm because that is what it takes to survive and because over the generations people have determined the "norm" to be the best path to take in life.. and of course the norm is always evolving, so if it doesn't suit you, tweak it a little! - JonnyLegal, on 04/28/2008, -8/+37Emo, anti-government, I-hate-my-parents garbage. Get an education and do something worthwhile with your life instead of preaching ***** through vandalism.
- Easty, on 04/28/2008, -2/+30Bravo! Spoken like a douche.
- Clockw0rk, on 04/28/2008, -1/+30Digg is depressing.
- GramarNatzi, on 04/28/2008, -5/+32Really? Did you ever go to a public school? Why do women starve themselves to the point of anorexia? Why do people pay $100 for a pair of nike trainers which cost less than $1 to make? Why does my timex cost 1/10th of a rolex, yet it tells the same time? Why do girls as young as 10 feel the need to cake themselves in make-up and wear slutty clothes? How did something as ridiculous as pokemon catch on as a fad?
Its all about status. Generally, if you want the hot wife, fast car and big paycheck you gotta do things a certain way. Whether you see that as right or wrong its just the way things are. - ANT1138, on 04/28/2008, -3/+30The freedom to live in a cardboard box and eat garbage.
- bobbydiamondz, on 04/28/2008, -3/+30Agreed. "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: the fashionable non-conformist"
- serif69, on 04/28/2008, -0/+26yum

Still kisses with saliva, no longer empty and frantic like a cat tied to a stick
That's driven into frozen winter *****, the ability to laugh at weakness
Calm fitter, healthier and more productive a pig in a cage on antibiotics - inactive, on 04/28/2008, -3/+27 isnt not living with your mom completely part of the conformist sentiment? like you have to move out of your parents before a certain age. i like living with my mom. i dont have to pay rent, i have the entire basement to myself, its clean, theres always food stocked, etc. i lived on my own for about two years and i was always broke, my roommates were crackheads, my neighborhood was mostly dangerous at night, i had cereal and ramen noodles for dinner most of the time, i felt like i was in a prison living in chicago, waited for ***** cta public transportation, air was dirty. ***** all that *****
- Aidenf77, on 04/28/2008, -4/+28Some people get so wrapped up with all their responsibilities that they never allow themselves to be happy and free enough to live in the moment, it's true. But only living in the moment and being free enough to do whatever you want without regard for any consequence isn't necessarily better. Those are examples of two extremes; the pragmatic vs. the quixotic. It's as if the writer doesn't recognize any middle ground, which makes for an extremely myopic perspective.
I agree with you overall. While it is true that the pursuit of "success" can create it's own kind of slavery, I can dismiss this message/question as non-conformist drivel; most likely written by somebody who hasn't found or even defined freedom for themselves, let alone anybody else. - JohnFrum, on 04/28/2008, -4/+28The point isn't to say that those are "bad" things. Notice how mundane the list is. Each item is something that most people either do without thinking much about it or activly strive for. There is so much left off the list required for happy life that it begs the question. Is this the life you want to live? What else would you rather be doing?
Granted, there are people for whom work and school are out of reach but that's not the heart of the issue. - undershirt, on 04/28/2008, -2/+25You can be free and still have an order to your life.
- HenvY, on 04/28/2008, -1/+24It's a quote from trainspotting you donkey, obviously not hard to find online.
- borez, on 04/28/2008, -20/+43That guys a born philosopher, thinker and conceptional artist, a credit to a generation.
/sarcasm - inactive, on 04/28/2008, -10/+33Does he own his own land and grow his own food??
Does he rely on well water and his own septic for waste?
Did he use his own burned charcoal to make that statement?
Does he grow his own wool and cotton and make his own clothes? - theOster, on 04/29/2008, -9/+31OH *****!!! well i don't want to be a LEMMING!!! guess i better
quit my job, pull my kids out of school
dress weirdly (goths are respected, right?),
act weirdly (homeless and the insane are pretty hip),
not walk on the pavement (whatever that means, guaranty i'll end up with dog crap on my shoe),
read underground publications (always bias-free),
blow all my money (presumably on recreational drugs (anything other than pot is for for losers)),
break the law (why i'm not sure, but it sounds kinda cool - you know hurting others and all that),
wow, i feel better already. now where can i get some spray paint...
i'd be curious to see where this person is in 10, 20, 30 years... - bobartig, on 04/28/2008, -2/+23Exactly what I was thinking. Very reminiscent of the anti-establishment sentiments from OK Computer
- ColonelJessup, on 04/28/2008, -5/+26I like Coldstone. They sing to you if you put money in their tip jar.
- MidnightRealism, on 04/28/2008, -3/+23http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahatma_Gandhi
- skankyBacon, on 04/28/2008, -0/+19I hate when restaurants do that, or like at Pizza Schmizza, they just sort of randomly shout. Makes me not want to tip them just to avoid the noise.
