- Hu99, on 06/02/2009, -2/+112The Germans did have the best looking uniforms in WW2.
- gvoakes, on 06/02/2009, -3/+107Makin' Nazi uniforms... LIKE A BOSS
- nonoriginal, on 06/02/2009, -0/+90Some of today's most popular brands have this kind of storied history - like Volkswagen and Adidas.
- vurdillac, on 06/02/2009, -2/+73There's lots of reasons to hate nazis, but those were some stylish *****.
- kick, on 06/02/2009, -0/+51Along with BMW, Mercedes etc etc. Is this really news?
- pintomp3, on 06/02/2009, -4/+50Bayer, IBM, the Bush family.
- Foot56, on 06/02/2009, -1/+46IBM made punch card machines to count the Jews and keep track of them, most don’t know that.
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -3/+44This is very old news.
- walker4bc, on 06/02/2009, -1/+34This is hardly shocking. I would imagine a lot of companies produced products for the Germans during WWII (and WWI for that matter).
- dankreek, on 06/02/2009, -3/+36Ugh... nobody working at that company was ALIVE during this era, and neither was anybody who has bought their products recently. Who the hell cares? This nation was built on the backs of slaves on land stolen from Native Americans, you going to stop paying your taxes now too?
- wannaBdug, on 06/02/2009, -8/+38Nothing was an easy choice during that time. The uniforms would have been made no matter who made them. it was the people that wore them that were despicable.
- Cahill, on 06/02/2009, -2/+30This isn't news. If you took any class regarding World War II or Nazi Germany you should have learned this. Oh wait, people go to college to get jobs, not education.
- pintomp3, on 06/02/2009, -1/+26I'd boycott, but I can't afford their stuff anyway.
- Atom, on 06/02/2009, -3/+24I'm sorry, I was under the impression that Hitler was a dictator and Germany was a fascist regime. What other choice did Hugo Boss have? Listen to your government and country while you are being brainwashed by their propaganda, or tell them to ***** themselves and their free labor while they kill you and put your family in prison camps. Who are we to judge his decision, we were not staring down the barrel of a gun.
I would understand if they were based out of Canada or South America and jumped on the Nazi bandwagon just for the hell of it, but that wasnt the case here. - wacked, on 06/02/2009, -0/+20Because clothing companies today don't use slave labor.... no... not at all... not even a tiny bit...
- pingpants, on 06/02/2009, -3/+23Trying to survive war can force you to make impossible choices, but using slave labor and prisoners of war is definitely an extreme choice.
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -1/+20From the description "Hugo Boss, who died in 1948, founded his family-owned garment business in 1923." I doubt he is doing much of anything.
- samk, on 06/02/2009, -1/+18Time goes in one direction.
Nothing you do now will save lives 65 years ago. - yesbeegee, on 06/02/2009, -0/+17Out of chaos comes (business) order(s)! There are numerous links on the web that discuss why war works great for business.
- unknownsoldierX, on 06/02/2009, -1/+17How is it anti-Semitic? Because Jews were the only ones affected by the Nazis?
- nullcodes, on 06/02/2009, -1/+15Back in the 17th century, digg helped the Puritans bury witches.
- nesagwa, on 06/02/2009, -2/+16IBM sold them equipment too.
So everyone that is all aghast at this, throw away any electronics you own. - cornfeed, on 06/02/2009, -1/+14You forgot the Kennedys. Old Joe thought Hitler had something going for him.
- MikeFromAmerica, on 06/02/2009, -0/+13I know it's unpopular to look at history in shades of gray but, not every Nazi soldier was a monster. Most were just guys fighting for their country. Some of them actually didn't even commit war crimes.
- Jlaugh, on 06/02/2009, -0/+13The fashion Industry still uses slave labour, and failing that near slave labour.
- taicho, on 06/02/2009, -1/+13Up until the first iMac that used an Intel chip Mac's were built on PowerPC chips...which were made by IBM, so in essence one might say by buying Apple computers you were supporting a Nazi-sympathizer.
- dalittle, on 06/02/2009, -1/+13I am more concerned with Child Slave Labor in places like China, India, and Africa that is happening today than what happened in WWII. Get over it and focus on some actual important issues of people suffering today.
- staffa, on 06/02/2009, -0/+12Slavery is wrong, using slave labor is wrong, refusing to use slave labor is honorable, even if you end up a slave as punishment. However, you have to consider that refusing to use the labor provided would have likely caused the labor to be gassed. Many of the jews back than wanted to work, because the other option was death. Let's not worry so much about the choices companies made in situtations that are impossible for us to understand, lets worry about making those situtations impossible.
- oboshoe, on 06/02/2009, -0/+11Hardly.
The first use of the punch card and readers was to tabulate the National Census in 1890
http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blhol ... - Headinawheel, on 06/02/2009, -1/+12Companies did business with Nazi Germany.
Just because they did business then, doesn't mean they're anti-semitic, rather if they didn't keep the company alive, they would have been conscripted into the military. It's easy to make the choices looking backwards, but few people would have done otherwise if we were in that place. - obreaslan, on 06/02/2009, -3/+14Articles also published at the same time as this one:
"Y2K? Will It Be Our Doom???" and "The Dot-Com Explosion! Nowhere To Go But UP!" - yayster, on 06/02/2009, -1/+11Is that an option?
- JCEEZ, on 06/02/2009, -0/+10Coca-Cola too.
That's why they made the Fanta brand, to sell to Nazi Germany and create some space between their core brands.
http://www.socyberty.com/History/Did-the-Nazis-Rea ... - twinklyJesus, on 06/02/2009, -2/+12Audi, BMW, Mercedes, ...so what? Mitsubishi made aircraft, Why would someone need to point this out?
- Subduction, on 06/02/2009, -8/+18No -- there were both easy choices and hard choices. The hard choice would have been to undergo financial hardship and not use concentration camp labor.
He made the easy choice. - beachtrader, on 06/02/2009, -1/+11Easy choice? Maybe the choice was make them or we will take your factory, send you to the concentration camps and then have someone else make them. You don't know for sure the choice he had.
There may not even been a choice. - plainOldFool, on 06/02/2009, -0/+10Aetna provided insurance on slavery in the United States.
- twst1up, on 06/02/2009, -1/+10Thought this was common knowledge. You gotta admit alot of the german uniforms, especially the SS, were pretty bad ass...in a scary way of course.
wait until you see who made the crematoriums - Jman5, on 06/02/2009, -1/+10Yeah, let's punish people who were not even alive during World War 2! THAT'LL SHOW THEM TO THINK TWICE ABOUT WHATEVER IT IS THEY ARE AT FAULT FOR!!
- kingmanic, on 06/02/2009, -0/+8Says you!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Alert_(computer_g ... - oboshoe, on 06/02/2009, -0/+7The company that later became IBM invented punchcards to tabulate the 1890 census.
Punch Cards actually have more history before WW II than after.
Punch cards were used about 60 years BEFORE WW II and about 30 years after. - dkrich, on 06/02/2009, -5/+11How about Ford Motor Company? They actually built equipment for the Nazis. Nowadays what they did would be considered treason. Kinda ruins that whole American corporation mentality.
- anillop, on 06/02/2009, -0/+6Technically the land for the railroad was Native American not Mexican.
- floronicman, on 06/02/2009, -1/+7i didn't know Boss made brown shirts
- VassilaZaitsev, on 06/02/2009, -4/+10Colt made guns for the 7th cavalry and that despicable Mr Custer.
Cherry picking history.
Black Southern American slaves picked the cotton for the bling bling northern *****.
The Chinaman slaved over the mountains for Union Pacific so northern ***** could steal the land from the Mexicans.
Boeing made aircraft to drop napalm on the Chinaman.
Raytheon made radar to guide B-29 bombers to drop Nukes over Nagasaki.
Better not pick the corn outa someones else's ***** before looking at your own - Jeepinator, on 06/02/2009, -0/+5It's possible he was forced to make uniforms.
- pmanija, on 06/02/2009, -2/+7"By ROBIN GIVHAN, THE WASHINGTON POST
August 15, 1997"
You know what they say - new is just forgotten old... - Nicko01, on 06/02/2009, -0/+5Nazi: Toetet die Juden! (oh, und, lern doch Grammatik...)
- smcnow, on 06/02/2009, -2/+7Is this news? Which German company from the 1930's and 40's did not produce something for the Nazis. From household items to office supplies to heavy machinery, the Nazis were people running an industrialized country. Their needs would have been the same as any other industrialized country at war and most items would necessarily be produced by German companies (using the cheapest labor). Show me a company that did not make anything used by the Nazis and I will be impressed.
From the article:
"Still, being manufacturer of Nazi uniforms, as opposed to airplane parts or rivets, packs a larger emotional punch, he says."
