google maps/earth images are not taken by an airplane, dumbass, they are satellite images. taken by a satellite in space. - SRSco, on 09/05/2008, -3/+10Reminds me of the forest hammer and sickle.
(They did this for Stalin too.)

- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -1/+8Hmm, for some reason your illiterate personal attack doesn't pack much wallop. Ah well, the intertubez never have been good at translating sarcasm, irony or gallows humor. But they're just swell at translating poorly written grade school insults, as I'm sure you would agree.
Speaking of ignorant ***** though, what's a mushroom could? - inactive, on 09/06/2008, -1/+71920s Russia...How I miss thee.
- 00420, on 09/06/2008, -1/+7Shut the ***** up, Donny! V.I. Lenin! Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov!
- ChristBehemoth, on 09/06/2008, -2/+8Mother Russia will rise again!
/okay I just love saying that - SpiraetSpera, on 09/06/2008, -4/+9Buried as inaccurate. It actually says "I am the walrus."
- OC73, on 09/06/2008, -1/+6In case you doubted the leftist origins of the "green" movement...
"The first ever Earth Day, a celebration to raise awareness of environmental issues, was held on Lenin's birthday April 22 in 1970, which could be another clue towards the message's origins."
Ya think? - HCviolence, on 09/06/2008, -1/+5Get the chainsaws boys, we're gonna cut us the image of Rick Astley.
- SirMildred, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4As usual, they credit the hi-res pics to satellites. Nope, pics like this are taken from an aeroplane.
- captainLAGER, on 09/06/2008, -4/+7***** Communism.
- solid12345, on 09/06/2008, -4/+7The famine, the genocides, the civil war, yes we need that back!
- msten19, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3I'm impressed it's still as clear as it is after almost forty years.

"Lenin 100 years"
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Z ... - PFCWilliams, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2There are two towns on either side of these trees, both only 2.5 miles away, on the border of Kazakhstan, not in Siberia. The whole area appears to be some kind of tree farm, like the US's Pacific northwest where after trees are harvested they are replanted and cut down again after 60 years. There are large areas of trees with very well defined straight borders and the trees within these areas are lined up in a row, suggesting man planted them and not random growth. And the area around the "Lenin" tree sign is devoid of any trees at all. So ya, they have definitely been performing upkeep on this little tree sign.
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -7/+9Say what you want about the Soviet Union, at least they were a worthy adversary for the USA. Not like the bus-blowing-up religious freaks we're aligned against these days. The Soviets had uniforms, and missiles, and didn't live in caves. Come on, Putin, bring it back!
- anachronaut, on 09/06/2008, -1/+3You're assuming that the satellite imagery is current, but it's most likely not.
I live in the US, and the "current" satellite view of where I live is missing about half the town, meaning that the images are somewhere around 15-20 years old (as a guess, could be even older). I've just been going with the assumption that the current imagery was "redacted" because I live very close to a large air force base and fairly close to another, even more sensitive military installation, but who knows... just because it's on Google doesn't mean it's necessarily a recent image. - yojimbo911, on 09/07/2008, -1/+2Someone please translate into RUSSIAN:
It seems some Russians should smarten up. True, the American government may be the global tyrant right now, but Lenin was one of the worst human beings in human history. He was completely deluded intellectually, and was directly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent Russians. If you consider the legacy of his genocidal and economically unsound ideas, he is indirectly responsible for the wrongful murder of over 100 million living, breathing, individuals. The American government is out of control, granted. But it is not THAT out of control just yet. Smarten up you fringe Russian buffoons!!! Be proud of the good aspects of your Russian cultural history, not the profound mistakes. Just because we Americans (stupidly) celebrate our terrible war-mongering leaders doesn't mean you Russians should do the same. - waydee, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1The only other article on the front page from a .co.uk domain is the one about Palins affair.
Why does that make every other news source from the UK inaccurate? because you don't agree with that particular story?
Just because this is a Telegraph story doesn't make it inaccurate, are you suggesting that this memorial to Lenin doesn't exist or something? - DjOverEZ, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1"I am the walrus"
"SHUT THE ***** UP DONNIE!" - Awspire, on 09/14/2008, -0/+1That forest should be cut down and used to help build a Six Flags Amusement park.
***** you Lennin, for deceiving those to bring about a revolution which led to decades of the most brutal form of governance humanity has ever known. - directrix13, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1@waydee:
Go ahead and browse through the recent .co.uk front pagers. They are almost always rumor mill. - waydee, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1what?
- davideparker, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Dude, I can see my car from Google Earth. It's a VW bug.
- fluxion, on 09/06/2008, -1/+2already did, not surprisingly.
they should've done something noble with them, like plant more trees to put "F U C K" in front of it. maybe some ascii art afterward - CrushThemTorg, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1All the things she said / Runnin' through my head – runnin' through my head.
- hardwarehank, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1So True. Just wait until the Homeland Security Corps is instantiated...
- smokyjoewood12, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1Their translation was not literal, not that there's anything wrong with that. It translates straight to "Lenin at 100 years". I'm not harping on them, just spreading the knowledge.

- jstem1994, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1I thought maybe this was in Strawberry Fields. (Ok, I'm tired. It sounded funnier before I typed it)
- artfiend77, on 09/06/2008, -2/+2Just a matter of time before someone plants trees in the form of pedobear...
- BossKey, on 09/06/2008, -1/+1Wow, that must suck if you went to the trouble to chainsaw all those trees and it went unnoticed for 38 years.
In Soviet Russia...if a tree stands up in a forest, does anyone see it? - billbugger, on 09/05/2008, -4/+4Simple fix: cut them down.
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -1/+1Cool.
- NEUTRINO50, on 09/07/2008, -0/+0http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_earth basic research ftw
- souc, on 09/15/2008, -0/+0The newspaper is wrong, the writing has been planted, not carved out. That might explain why it's still so "fresh". I don't know what it looks like now, my image library says the photo is from 1999. And yes, the region bordering Kazakhstan IS Siberia. Referred to as Eastern Siberia, to be precise.
- dawndaemon, on 09/07/2008, -0/+0You should freshen up your history a bit...
