- ggfergu, on 01/11/2008, -2/+26That's pretty cool. I think the HDR thing is starting to get a bit out of hand, and I've seen some pretty bad excuses for HDR lately, but it's nice to see some properly done HDR images.
- merripen, on 01/11/2008, -1/+9While I also enjoy some of the above posted work, does anyone else feel like the term "HDR" has gone the way of "organic"? That is, a flashy buzz word that has become meaningless and applicable to every high-contrast, oversaturated image? Do most people even know what HDR means, or do we all just synonymize it with hyper-reality?
- DarkDx, on 01/11/2008, -1/+6HDR is the new exagerated contrast.

- Soave, on 01/11/2008, -1/+17HDR != High Def
HDR stands for High Dynamic Range, which means more color/light information, not higher resolution.- merripen, on 01/11/2008, -12/+7I understand that, but higher contrast = more well defined herpes sores.
- IsmailOo, on 01/11/2008, -2/+7haha still trying to save yourself.. lol
- Firehed, on 01/11/2008, -1/+3Yeah but merripen, HDR isn't about more contrast, it's about lighting the scene properly. Technically, that makes it lower contrast (though higher detail).
- merripen, on 01/12/2008, -5/+3While lighting is certainly important, HDRI is not really about lighting the scene as much as it is about maintaining a specific contrast range in all parts of the image, even those which would normally blow out or fade to black. I feel like that specific contrast range is higher than normal.
But as I said in my earlier comment, there seems to be a lot of confusion and blanketing with the term.

and another one bites the dust. congrats digg - ShustOne, on 01/11/2008, -0/+15Some HDR is amazing while some is atrocious. The good ones look blended as if they were one image. They trick you because you know they are impossible. Too many HDR images have "halos" around them from not being blended correctly. Those need to stop.

- pixelmixer, on 01/11/2008, -2/+5HDR != HD ... High Dynamic Range vs High Definition ;
HDR has to do with lighting and different exposures. HD has to do with the resolution. You can have HD HDR images, and you can have regular HDR images. However you cant have HD HDR images on the web, these images are web standard 72 dpi images.- jdpalite, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1Who's digging pixelmixer down? This is correct...
- rages4calm, on 01/11/2008, -0/+8I feel sorry for the owners of websites who get posted on digg.
- aldenhg, on 01/11/2008, -3/+13Maybe I'm just a traditionalist, but I don't quite see the appeal of HDR images. Sure, the hyper real look is neat, but I have yet to see someone apply it in a way that artistically moved me. Now go ahead and bury me for going against the grain.
- trisweb, on 01/12/2008, -3/+1Buried for going against the grain.
- FoxOrian, on 01/11/2008, -1/+11I still only enjoy HDR images if it looks like there is truly a wide range of exposures in the same image, much like the human eye would detect or greater. I find the hyper-glowy/blurry ones that look like bad photoshop filters applied to a normal photo a waste of time because the user was too lazy to properly spot-tone the image.
A good HDR takes time, but the results can be jaw-dropping.
Wikipedia shows an amazing example of an HDR done right: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/22 ...- FoxOrian, on 01/11/2008, -0/+15Image link didnt seem to work right...

- amneosis, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1cheers, great tip
- ChocoMidget, on 01/11/2008, -2/+17These are horrendous HDRs. Can we please stop calling photos likes these HDR as if this is the defining characteristic of one. These people buy a program, have no idea what it was meant to do and then just throw the settings bar in different directions destroying not only the visual appeal of the image but also the image's integrity. That being said, as a photographer who uses HDR on a daily basis, these people are just a bunch of ass clowns that don't know how to use the program or don't care to figure it out. Want to see a great HDR? THE POINT IS YOU CAN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE. It's supposed to exactly replicate what the human eye sees. A la 22 stops of information over film or digital which is around 8 or 9. Another tip for you would be HDRers, BRIGHTEN your skies!, Clouds don't become completely dark like they appear in your files, that's the computer program ***** up.
- MikeGrenade, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2Don't know why you're being dugg down.
- centran, on 01/12/2008, -0/+4While I agree with you; I will say that some of these are not horrendous. I have seen much worse (halo's forming around buildings) What we need is another name for these pictures. I propose "tonal mapping" since that is what those programs call it.
Right now people hate HDR because they are used to HDR as the over saturated "glowly" punched up color pictures. That is not HDR but post processing filters.
HDR is just merging multiple exposures into 1 file so you can see the detail in the very bright and very dark areas... how the human eye sees the picture if they where there.

- UKsHaDoW, on 01/11/2008, -2/+10The Idea of HDR photos is to able to get the details of a image in the light and dark areas rather than just the light areas or the dark areas. Not this weird unrealistic stuff.
- ccordero, on 01/11/2008, -1/+2Couldnt agree more. I hate it when people overdo HDR.
- Typhoon2009, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1How do I make HDR pictures? "Real" HDR that is...
- agenthamsta, on 01/11/2008, -1/+1It's a process of image making with multiple layers of exposures...read more about it on WIKI
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_dynamic_range_im ... - centran, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2You see most of these images coming from a program called photomatrix. Personally I hate the program because it is too easy and encourages photos like these. However, it is possible to do proper HDR with that program.
The easiest way to do proper HDR correctly is a process in PhotoShop called merge to HDR. This is only is CS2 or above.
Photoshop is real easy you just select your pictures. You need at least 3 shots identical but taken at different exposures (shutter speed not aperture!). The hardest part is once you get your final shot you need to convert the file down from 32bits and there are various "tweaks" to doing that.

- mikhon, on 01/11/2008, -3/+2a whole website for sharing ur ugly "HDR" (yea, in quotes!) pictures?? this is stupid, y not just use flickr or any other picture sharing website..
- agenthamsta, on 01/11/2008, -1/+4If people want regular images then yes you can share them on flikr or w/e you please. But if someone is searching for HDR images, it's nice to have a dedicated site just for that.
- mikhon, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2there are groups and tags for those purposes
- agenthamsta, on 01/11/2008, -1/+4If people want regular images then yes you can share them on flikr or w/e you please. But if someone is searching for HDR images, it's nice to have a dedicated site just for that.
- scingram, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2HDR is a process whereby multiple images shot at different exposure settings are blended together to form an image that achieves a greater range of light than a standard single image can achieve on its own.
It also incorporates a process called "Tone Mapping" which allows the user to adjust the values of said images to create the finalized product.
This tone mapping process is where you can either make a beautiful image or destroy a perfectly good shot. Knowing how to properly tone map is the key to a good HDR. -And knowing is half the battle.
I for one love HDR and shoot this way for the majority of my work.
www.scottingramphotography.com- centran, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1It is this tone mapping that screws everything up. That is why we need a new name for these punched up tonal mapped photos... maybe that TMP (tone mapped photo).
A good HDR makes you say "WOW! beautiful shot!" not... "cool, how did they do that with the colors?"
- centran, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1It is this tone mapping that screws everything up. That is why we need a new name for these punched up tonal mapped photos... maybe that TMP (tone mapped photo).
- colinbg, on 01/12/2008, -1/+1don't you know that they make a creme for that...
- nighthwk1, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1Real HDR images by definition cannot be stored in a JPG file. These are compressed range images, and therefore usually look like crap. They're also completely useless for image-based lighting / reflections.
- centran, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2While technically correct that is not the reason they look like crap. They look like crap because these people mess with what is called the "tone mapping" in some of programs.
The reason for HDR is to get a photo where you can see the details in the very bright areas as well as the very dark areas. You are merging shots at different exposures together. It doesn't matter much when you convert it from 32bits(your monitor can't display that to begin with). The crap comes with the post processing.
If these people would just use photoshop they would get better pictures. It is a little more difficult to mess with "tonal mapping" in photoshop because it doesn't stick it in your face like the other programs.
- centran, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2While technically correct that is not the reason they look like crap. They look like crap because these people mess with what is called the "tone mapping" in some of programs.
- kitaljevich, on 01/12/2008, -0/+3To put it simply:
Trying to create something with High Dynamic Range when the source is a single JPEG == FAIL!
Creating a High Dynamic Range image with multiple (different exposure) RAW's == WIN!
Now put away your Coolpix's kids...- kryogenix, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2Wrong.
Creating a HDR image and displaying it on a screen that is actually capable of displaying a high dynamic range == WIN. - centran, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1You can make a HDR from MULTIPLE jpeg... not a single. It just takes a lot more exposures ;)
But if you are trying to HDR and not shooting RAW you fail to begin with... or just don't have a good enough camera which means instead of maybe being able to get away with only 3 RAWS you need 5 or 7 jpegs at different exposures.
- kryogenix, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2Wrong.
- endlessraining, on 01/12/2008, -1/+1HDR feels like cheating to me
- centran, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1How is it cheating? Are you talking about these "pumped up" shots or normal HDR which is just the merging of multiple exposures to get fine details in bright and dark areas?
The only way it is cheating is if you mean to do it in the darkroom by masking off different parts of the print and the dodging and burning different areas. If not doing it in the darkroom is cheating then call me a cheater because yes I have tried it in the darkroom before and yes it is a major pain in the ass.
- centran, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1How is it cheating? Are you talking about these "pumped up" shots or normal HDR which is just the merging of multiple exposures to get fine details in bright and dark areas?

- Funpolice2050, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1Site is down. But the image in the thumbnail makes me want to barf. Its way overdone. HDR is only effective when its very subtle. It should not look like I'm viewing the picture while high on shrooms.
- Proctor, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1Image is *****, so is the tractor. I don't think this is good HDR at all. I've seen very good HDR that isn't overprocessed and actually shows great detail, colors, and looks life like.
