- nhansen, on 07/21/2009, -6/+435"Far too often has HDR photography been pushed onto the web that resembles little more than true HDR."
Huh? - cosworth99, on 07/21/2009, -9/+358Oh for *****'s sake. Dave Hill? Are you guys new to photography?
NOT HDR. Dave Hill's work is heavy on post processing the contrast, selective sharpening etc. What many of you don't realize is the LIGHTING he's using is not HDR, it's exceptional off camera flash to accentuate his look.
Buried for being old news, mislabeled and a look that has gone past its prime in photography. - tobiasproject, on 07/21/2009, -24/+269i hate these terrible fake-action photos.. so over processed and they all look like Jerry Bruckheimer movies.
- sirmasterboy, on 07/21/2009, -8/+243There is no "right way" to do HDR. It's up to the photographer to make the picture look the way they want it to. As long as the picture's dynamic range is higher than normal they can call it HDR...
- pukiman, on 07/21/2009, -5/+153That's not HDR. That's more of CGI.
- jaygeeze, on 07/21/2009, -9/+136Next up: HDR Photography Done Wrong. That post would be easier to write.
- kamheron, on 07/21/2009, -4/+131Way too post-processed for my taste..
- jcundall, on 07/21/2009, -19/+105For those who don't know (most of you), HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. High dynamic range images enable photographers to record a greater range of tonal detail than a given camera could capture in a single photo. This allows the photographer to combine a series of bracketed exposures into a single image which encompasses the tonal detail of the entire series in Photoshop.
- Coffeedemon, on 07/21/2009, -2/+80That must be why they deal in pictures... the proper use of words seems to be a little difficult to grasp.
- jgaspar, on 07/21/2009, -2/+68me fail english? thats unpossible
- jimmyjars, on 07/21/2009, -8/+71This ***** looks terrible and his website is down. Buried.
- SilentSpyder, on 07/21/2009, -0/+49When I read "HDR Photography Done Right" I said "finally" but was sorely disappointed. This is the artsy fartsy type of HDR that I can't stand*. I'm of the opinion that HDR is best when it comes close to matching the human eye's dynamic range and not look like some surreal trippy fantasy land.
*and yes I read that's it not true HDR but you know what I mean. - TonyTastey, on 07/21/2009, -1/+39NOT HDR. Bury.
- captainDyl, on 07/21/2009, -4/+35Too hectic. I prefer Kalle Gustafsson.
http://kallegustafsson.com/ - jggr, on 07/21/2009, -3/+33I didn't know.
/And I'm as average as they come. :P - nhansen, on 07/21/2009, -20/+47It seems a little presumptuous to assume most of us "don't know" what HDR is.
- silfiriel, on 07/21/2009, -0/+27isn't one of the photos a still from Transformers?
after a second look, most of the photos are not HDR, good art but definitely not hdr. - earther, on 07/21/2009, -1/+27"I couldn't help but think each of them had been altered in some way"
Really?
What gave it away? - nkornelis, on 07/21/2009, -3/+26Yuck. Buried.
- feshmania, on 07/21/2009, -7/+30agreed it' old news, but past its prime? can anything go past its prime in art? I mean, if people still like it, it's still kickin', right?
- mrgreen09, on 07/21/2009, -5/+27Dave Hill is amazing. He says his technique is not HDR though.
- silfiriel, on 07/21/2009, -8/+29so what you propose that DSLRs are kept from the masses so rare people could call themselves professionals?
***** you and your snobism. - Jektal, on 07/21/2009, -4/+21Yeah, I hate HDR action shots (like most of these), but love HDR landscape shots.
- Forky, on 07/21/2009, -2/+18You can try to think of them as lightpaintings, that helps a lot.
- ldkronos, on 07/21/2009, -3/+19It would be a link to the same group of photos, because most of them are the terrible examples he seems to want to set himself apart from.
- tenberg, on 07/21/2009, -2/+17Here are some examples of true HDR photography done right. None of this 8-bit artsy fartsy crap.
http://www.cis.rit.edu/fairchild/HDRPS/HDRthumbs.h ... - jedisushi, on 07/21/2009, -1/+15Meh. It's technically impressive, but so little of what actually ends up in the image is real.
- philoponia, on 07/21/2009, -2/+16I'm a little bit more average
- diemunkiesdie, on 07/21/2009, -2/+16Mirror: http://rorr.im/digg.com/arts_culture/hdr_photograp ...
- silfiriel, on 07/21/2009, -0/+14ok they are great, who was the model in Adventure Girl?
- Spor, on 07/21/2009, -0/+13Yeah, breakdancing is pretty cool.
- B1665r, on 07/21/2009, -2/+13Sort of like my Casio Elixim camera that has a double shot picture taking mode, so that... Say you were standing in front of the Disney world castle at night. It takes one picture with flash so you get the subject of the shot, then it really quckly takes a second shot without flash so you get the glowing lights of the castle.
- 7m7uf, on 07/21/2009, -5/+16Or because sometimes, if done right, they can be extraordinarly breathtaking and allows us to appreciate our surroundings in a different light.
- feshmania, on 07/21/2009, -0/+11you comment like Lil' Jon talks
- jakdoe, on 07/21/2009, -1/+12I agree. People should just stop calling it HDR since folks get so stuck up on the name itself.
- fcrow, on 07/21/2009, -1/+12This is so lame, and photoshopping images to death has nothing to do with HDR photography, wtf @#$@#$? Wraaaaahh!!
<sorry, just had some M&M's> - climbonice, on 07/22/2009, -1/+12I agree, those photos look so artificial. HDR has to be one of the most abused photographic techniques in use today. IMO the use of HDR should be so subtle that you really don't know it's being used, but heck that's me...a bit on the tradition side I guess.
- nkornelis, on 07/21/2009, -0/+10Yes. Much better.
- immatellyouwhat, on 07/21/2009, -1/+11Those all look like Speed Stick Ads, you know the one with the horrible tagline "Kicks in in the clutch" WHAT?!
- Coffeedemon, on 07/21/2009, -1/+10Oh oh... the photographers have spoken. Or at least one person who fancies himself capable of speaking for all of them.
- bobdole369, on 07/21/2009, -0/+9Yeah this is still way overdone. Buried for misleading title. These are all mostly CGI done with a TON of post. This is still WAY too overblown.
- palehorse864, on 07/22/2009, -1/+10They look artificial because it's fairly obvious he's done a lot of work beyond HDR to these. He's even added in fake lighting effects on the gun lights.
I'm not saying that it's not good, but it is pretty clear that he's done a lot more than just shoot different exposures and HDR them. - nepidae, on 07/21/2009, -0/+8No, not really. These look like they were rendered.
- feshmania, on 07/21/2009, -0/+8OK!
- WafflesID, on 07/22/2009, -1/+9Yeah, but there sure as hell is a "wrong way" to do HDR.
http://digg.com/d3eHCL - bradleyland, on 07/21/2009, -2/+10Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I'm with Forky on this one. You have to appreciate them for what they are. Photography isn't limited to simply capturing a scene with as realistic a tone as possible. It is an art, and as such is subject to creative addition or subtraction. HDR is just another tool in an artists toolset.
Personally, I'm not a big fan of photos where the only thing that is interesting about them is the fact that they are HDR (landscape HDR comes to mind). However, Dave Hill's work incorporates HDR in a way that evokes a certain feeling, and that is what art is about; feeling. - 68024, on 07/22/2009, -1/+9It could be argued that this is more 'digital art' rather than 'photography'.
- Jektal, on 07/21/2009, -0/+7YEEAAH you do.
- lolwutpear, on 07/21/2009, -1/+8Those appear to be HDR photos. Surely they have no place here.
- devindotcom, on 07/21/2009, -2/+9"snobbery"
