- Kornstalx, on 12/04/2008, -2/+34I've always thought the mother in that photo was friggin' beautiful...
Color me old fashioned? - organicpop, on 12/03/2008, -2/+26What a sad but beautiful picture that is.
- Barackalypse, on 12/04/2008, -4/+19Notice she said "I wanted to make sure I never lived like that again", not that "I want the Government to make sure I never live like that again". Its a pretty power statement.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -2/+16She is rather attractive.
But she would be better with collagen in her lips, botox in her forehead and cheeks, a half pound of make-up, hair extensions/highlights, a boob-job with photoshopped cleavage, and she has to act like a reprehensible bitch on a reality TV show. - SuperVepr308, on 12/04/2008, -1/+13My grandmother lived through the real depression and she completely changed her way of thinking because of it. She would never buy anything on credit, saved money religiously and never threw anything of value away. She stayed that way until her death this year at 90.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+11The shame should be on the bankers then and now!
- future15tbd, on 12/03/2008, -5/+16An incredible image and a touching story. I feel strange saying this, but "Well done, CNN"
- TexasKoz, on 12/04/2008, -8/+18I have noticed lately that there is an increase in stories about the Depression era. Are we to to believe that we are in a depression now because the economy is in the toilet? While there are some parallels, I do not see us (USA) having another depression. ..But Congress needs to STOP the bailouts and let the market correct itself. The more money we pour into the market in the form of bailouts, the weaker the dollar becomes. Inflation will soon happen. Then, a recession becomes a depression. I am happy that Obama has flipped on his tax plan...(tax the rich more). The last thing you want to do is increase taxes during a recession...especially to the top earners in the country.
- Barackalypse, on 12/04/2008, -7/+17I guess that's the difference between then and now. They were ashamed and vowed never to let that happen again. These days, there's no shame, they vow to get the Government to fix things for them which guarantees it will keep happening.
- Conwaysb0718, on 12/04/2008, -6/+14well dont worry, the federal government is here to help... whether you want it or not.
- jahurt, on 12/04/2008, -3/+11This doesn't make sense... the tax rate on top-earners rose to 79% in 1936 and remained above 70% until 1982.

If higher taxes on top-earners is so bad for the economy, why did the US economy expand so much during this period? - theOster, on 12/04/2008, -1/+9seriously, i wish people felt ashamed today rather than this obscene air of arrogance and deserving. i've started leaning towards wishing a major economic collapse just to give us all a sense of perspective. the only downside is that those that are truly deserving of the reality check won't feel it at all and will prob benefit even more from it.
le sigh... - OfficialJoe, on 12/04/2008, -0/+7Okay.
/gets out sepia crayons - RealmDown, on 12/04/2008, -1/+8*Looks at you closely*
You're being sarcastic, aren't you. I can tell. - brickbat, on 12/04/2008, -2/+8Get ready.
- MrMysterious, on 12/04/2008, -1/+6How in the hell have I spent 29 years of my life without seeing that picture? Now seeing the picture and the story together it really hits home what my grandparents went through in the 30's.
- SpinningHead, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5Actually, the numbers show its the biggest economic crisis since the depression. That doesn't mean its exactly the same. Incidentally, they initially called it a depression because "depression" sounded like a little dip in the road.
- Kornstalx, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5progress?
- SwornPacifist, on 12/04/2008, -1/+6Wikipedia link to super hi-res (6,205 × 8,066!!) version of that photo:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Lange-MigrantMo ... - Peralton, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4The Great Depression is a very interesting time in U.S. history. The weather channel (of all places) has been running a great documentary on the causes and effects of the 'dust bowl' which affected so many of the migrant workers and farm owners during that time.
If you want to see some other moving images of this time, check out these sites:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/ (Search for 'Migrant')
Or, do a Google image search on 'dust bowl' or 'great depression'. - SuperVepr308, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4She lived through the real deal. The things they dealt with then were far more dire than our situation. I'm not saying things are rosey but if you heard her talk of it, we are in vastly better shape.
- Tom10803, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3This has been one of my favorite pictures for a very long time
- SpinningHead, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4Go to bed, Mr Limbaugh.
- sexybobo, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3and food and money for that matter.
- govsucks, on 12/04/2008, -4/+7Right on, people today not only have no shame, they have a ***** RIGHT to have someone else fix their problems.
I don't have food! Someone get it for me!
I don't have education! Someone teach me!
I don't have healthcare! Someone force doctors to labor for me at no cost!
I don't have a job! Someone create one for me!
Worthless dependent collectivists - sexybobo, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3I think she would look better if she had some food she is to thin and i bet she would look happier if she was sure she would have food to feed her kids.
- globalthreat, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2Times are tough right now. Im sure some of us can relate to Katherine McIntosh.
- inactive, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2I'm not the one that's crazy, YOU are. In a crazy world, the sane are crazy, and the perceived "crazy" are sane.
How could you be informed of everything that's going on and No be paranoid????? sheep. - bffoley, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2I'm surprised they were able to fit real journalism like this in between Lou Dobbs yelling about Mexicans and Nancy Grace yelling about the missing white woman of the week.
- UNL1M1T3D, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2Yeah for instance most people aren't sleeping in tents and have food.
- funkytaco, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2This is a great photo. I've seen it several times but last was this Sunday coincidentally in a great book called the Photo Book. It's ubiquitious at book stores, so if you like photography take it off the shelf for a minute.
- inactive, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2"Well done CNN"? Any news station can report a moving story, to some extent, that's not relevant to the world that we live in. Give me a fair and balanced news station and I will say "about ***** time".
- MrShibby, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2that´s exactly what i thought!
how come? - ancientsociety, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Agreed. She was/is a very beautiful woman.
- TheSeeker11, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2"Are you being sarcastic, dude?"
"I don't even know anymore." - natophonic, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2I don't have a website on which to spout my right-wingnut views! Someone create it for me!
... and yet you bitch about how awful digg is, having used the site for over two years and been quite active apparently. - rokklobster, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2As a photo minor, I've seen and discussed this famous photo in almost every photo class I've taken. It's great to finally know the story behind it.
- cdigioia, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1#1 You don't have to invest in US dollars, it be almost any currency you like
#2 When shorting a currency, your payment wouldn't be in that currency...think about it, that would be impossible. - pickleprince, on 12/05/2008, -1/+2The point is that poverty is not a choice. It's not self-inflicted like most selfish-assed Republicans believe.
This article jsut reinterates that IMO. - Epicview, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Its nice to hear that the family came through it ok.
- UNL1M1T3D, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1@theOster
I completely agree. The sense of "business as usual" in this country is only going to compound the problem. - Trick07, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1I never knew that picture was taken in my neck of the woods. Nipomo, CA is 6 miles from where I live... I always thought it was a picture from somebody in the mid-west.
- SpinningHead, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2Yeah, back then they wanted the government to do nothing....which is why they voted for FDR? Incidentally, Hoover was busy giving handouts to the rich (trickle-down) with results similar to our current problems. Its moronic to talk about the government as some external entity. Its by the people, for the people.
- WesleyD, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Holy *****, you weren't joking about the hi-res.. you could put that thing on a billboard.
- ostracize, on 12/04/2008, -2/+3The depression itself (not just the stock market) was probably at it's worse point in 1936 (the year this photo was snapped by the way). It is certainly asinine to credit FDR with solving the Great Depression. It took him 9 YEARS to "do it". And even then it was the war that presented a solution and that was to a great extent outside of his control. This admiration for FDR confusing at best and retarded at worse.
- secrity, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1It seems that some people were not greatly affected by the Great Depression. My dad was a farm boy in Minnesota and was unaffected by the drought -- their farm produced well. My mom's dad was a mechanic and blacksmith in a small farm town that was also unaffected by the drought, and he had lots of business. I am under the impression that there wasn't a lot of money; but their families both had nice houses, food, clothing, and no debt.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2Just keep on living in denial sucker. Just keep on drinking that fluoridated water, take those vaccines with mercury and heavy metals, eat those processed foods, believe what the bimbo news anchor say, and think everything is alright. that's right sheep scum.
- laughandsing, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Paperkutter--> wouldn't you like to have unbiased news? Anything with a spin on in is manipulated. Id rather just have clear cut facts. Id like to make my own opinion on the news that is given to me. Hence why I don't watch any news channels. Its not a matter of being left or right. I would honestly like just a happy medium with real news.
- jaythree9, on 12/09/2008, -0/+1If you live in Minnesota, you can view the print in Gallery 365 at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. http://artsmia.org/viewer/detail.php?v=12&id=4 ...
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -5/+66-12 months the ***** will hit the fan. stock up on stuff now,. it will be a depression with hyperinflation.
