- LaurenElder, on 10/01/2009, -0/+42I'm kind of excited for this book, but I don't see how it could top the Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks.
- mwtapp, on 10/11/2009, -0/+16I agree. If zombies ever attack, I am going to call on Max Brooks.
- Hetman, on 10/02/2009, -1/+14Yea World War Z and the Zombie survival guide are awesome. It is going to be very difficult to beat those stories. I kind of wish that Max Brooks would write another WWZ. I would like to know more about what happened in Isreal and Ice land. It also only briefly talks about south America and Austrialia. Also WTF is with North Korea?
- bubgz, on 10/02/2009, -0/+11In his defense, cashing in on the old hasn't worked out so well either.
- filthwizard, on 10/02/2009, -1/+10"It starts in San Diego, where a corpse sits up and begins to walk during an autopsy"
Yeah, yeah. Very inventive George, but you'll have to do better to beat the opening chapters of World War Z - zanvann, on 10/02/2009, -1/+9Seriously World War Z is absolutely awesome. I've read it twice now and I would happily read it again, it's one of the most entertaining books I've read. If you haven't read it, log the ***** off digg and go and read it now. NOW. Got it? NOW.
Now. - cntlscrut, on 10/02/2009, -0/+8I've got a space to the right of "Zombie Survival Guide" and "World War Z" ready for it on the back on my toilet. (because it's the perfect place to read!)
- acdcfanbill, on 10/02/2009, -0/+7Don't be ragging on Return of the Living Dead, that ***** kicks ass! The second one was good, and the third was ok too. After that you can ignore them though.
- miltank, on 10/02/2009, -0/+7someone hasn't watched Day of the Dead.
also, like some of the comments said: Saying zombies can or can't do something is like saying what colors a unicorn can or can't be. - BrownieMix, on 10/02/2009, -0/+7George Romero is also going to be helping out with the script for Doom 4.
- immatellyouwhat, on 10/02/2009, -0/+6I'm pretty sure that's why he wrote the book, so you won't have to call him.
- wastelander, on 10/02/2009, -0/+6I thought it was from loss of habitat.. sort of like why you get bears in cities--"When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth."
Actually if your trying to come up with a physisiological, rather than supernatural explanation.. well, you should probably give up.. but if you really must try, I would have to conclude that the zombie virus somehow allows human cells to function for long periods purely on anaerobic metabolism. By necessity this would mean that the body was essentially consuming itself (as the cells would need something to oxidate.. lactate is only going to get you so far). Anaerobic metabolism would explain the lack of a requirement for a circulatory system (no need for delivery of oxygen from the lungs).. I suppose the heart might still beat sluggishly (if the blood didn't all coagulate) but it would serve to real purpose. Since anaerobic metabolism is fairly inefficient (compared to aerobic metabolism) it wouldn't be able to produce much energy explaining the staggering gait, and since the brain requires more energy than any other organ this would explaining the minimal cognitive function.
As for where such a virus might come from, there are potentially both military and medical applications for a virus that would allow the body to survive in the absence of oxygen or a functional circulatory system. Medically it might buy you a short period of time in a trauma situation or perhaps at least preserve organs for later harvesting and transplant. Militarily, a soldier that keeps going despite obviously fatal injuries could certainly be demoralizing to the enemy (well, probably allies as well).
As far as the brain fetish? Doesn't make much sense. The digestive system (like the heart) would be non-functional.. but maybe some animal part of the brain might drive some predatory instinct (or be engineered by into a military strain of virus).
Yes, I probably have too much time on my hands.. - Hetman, on 10/02/2009, -1/+7I liked land of the dead. It was more funny than most i of his movies but I still enjoyed it.
- Rudegar, on 10/02/2009, -1/+5the remake of dawn of the dead where Romero was not involved was good
the remake of day of the dead was crap! Romero was of cause not involved and the plot had next to nothing to do with the org - smashfest, on 10/02/2009, -4/+8$10 says he makes a shoddily produced movie based on it, direct-to-DVD, starring Skeet Ulrich and Michelle Rodriguez
- capheine, on 10/02/2009, -2/+6Buried for you hating on zombies.
Dugg for you hating on vampires. - Infowarsdotcom, on 10/02/2009, -4/+8George Romero is awesome.
Watch:
Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead
Day of the Dead
Diary of the Dead
Skip:
Land of the Dead
Return of the Living Dead (Romero was not involved) - NovaPrime9, on 10/02/2009, -4/+8You've seen the man's recent films, right? He's no longer the end-all, be-all of zombies. He's all but proven that he's lost his touch.
- Hetman, on 10/02/2009, -0/+4I agree that it is not his best movie. I still think it is worth the watch. I like the whole sky flower aspect of it. He should have tried to focus more on the difference between the people inside the town and outside of the town. Saying that I still think it is better than a lot of zombie movies that are out there. I have seen some really ***** zombie movies in my life.
- Infowarsdotcom, on 10/02/2009, -1/+5To me it felt like the plot never came together. It was as if he had planned on shooting a 4 hour movie and it ended up being 90 minutes.
In Day of the Dead, Bubb was able to recover some of his human skills through training. In Land of the Dead they all of a sudden are just really slow people who have the same ability to think as regular people. Character development was shallow and inexplicably there's a city of people when in the other movies there's no other survivors period.
Just my opinion but it didn't seem to fit with his other "Dead" movies. - TheDiggAbides, on 10/02/2009, -0/+3uhhh, how bout the events actually happening? :D
- kingmustard, on 10/02/2009, -0/+3Said who?
- BabyWookie, on 10/02/2009, -0/+2He pretty much invented the modern zombie genre, thus, he get to decide what zombies can or cannot do.
- Rudegar, on 10/02/2009, -0/+2Romero always struck me as more of a human inter relation focused person
vs. Max Brooks Survival Guide which is more the practical stuff covered - tenardier, on 10/02/2009, -0/+2skip land of the dead maybe. Return of the living dead was pretty good.
- rpgmakr, on 10/03/2009, -0/+2Hey, the guy redefined zombies on the screen ok? He is old now but he did his share for the zombies world.
- Infowarsdotcom, on 10/02/2009, -3/+5You need more fiber in your diet.
- capheine, on 10/02/2009, -1/+3Nothing is going to top the Survival Guide and WWZ. Nothing.
- kingmustard, on 10/02/2009, -0/+2Ooh, nice.
- alf86, on 10/02/2009, -0/+2I haven't read it yet, but I did listen to the audio book and it was spectacular. Read by multiple actors (several big names). Phenomenal listen. Well worth it. Abridged, though, so I'll be getting the book.
- mythicflux, on 10/02/2009, -1/+2Couldn't stand Diary of the Dead.
I get what he was trying to go for, but his attempt to ridicule documentaries like 'Loose Change' didn't really when out for me. The monotone voice over's and little bit's like 'Don't mess with Texas!' were terrible and when combined with the poor editing job, on the whole movie was pretty lackluster. - Hetman, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1It was allright. Personally I am not a fan of the whole documentary camara angles in movies. It was a neat gimmick in the blair witch project. However it also made sense in The blair witch project because they did not have enough money to film it properly. That is obviously not the case for Romero.
- Hetman, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1I would still rather deal with Romeros zombies than I would to deal with 28 days later zombies. They are much more frieghtening.
- ImYourRealDad, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1Romero's zombies learn to use guns. That's some scary *****.
- teamgwho, on 10/02/2009, -1/+2as one of the event planners for the NJ zombiewalk tomorrow, I find this thread to be relevant to my interests.
and a perfect chance to pimp the walk.
www.njzombiewalk.com - tanmaker, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1Or run!
- planbee, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1try watching Romero's flicks again. he's made the zeds intentionally smarter each go 'round from Night to Land. i think his newer movies haven't been nearly as good though. the original Dawn of the Dead is my favorite.
- martianbob, on 10/04/2009, -0/+1I'd see it.
- Spacejack, on 10/03/2009, -0/+1Not to be forgotten: Martin, Knightriders, and Code Name Trixie.
Avoid Bruiser though. - marktastic, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1Modern zombies tend to not be zombies at all, but a virus or something that makes you go crazy (28 Days Later, L4D, HL series). So you get to have them running and chase you which makes it scarier. The only downside is that they are easier to kill (anything that will kill a regular living person like bleeding to death or shots to the chest).
Old school Romero zombies would be clinically dead things rising out of graves with slow movement. Since they are dead or whatever, their brain has to be destroyed.
While I can understand that this is a wholly fictional subject, there are still boundaries of logic that need to be followed. Otherwise, you get cranky people. - inactive, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1Is this somehow related to the chemicals found outside 15 schools in 8 states?
- pikpikcarrotmon, on 10/03/2009, -0/+1Ugh. True Blood and Twilight absolutely destroyed all the vamp cred that Buffy, Blade, and Underworld fought so hard to establish.
- alf86, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1Exactly. He's not so much about the zombies as he is about the characters. The zombies are just the catalyst for their interaction. For me, that is what makes a good zombie flick. The zeds are secondary.
- arj007, on 10/03/2009, -0/+1when i think zombie i think Romero that to me means the man is a genius
- Spacejack, on 10/03/2009, -0/+1Or, to put it another way, "modern zombies are seen as a purely physical monster menace and the element of dealing with the hellish death and reanimation of your loved ones is completely absent except in the British comedy one."
- Spacejack, on 10/03/2009, -0/+1He did a damn sight more than his share. Nowadays someone pins a ***** donkeytail on the concept and goes around proclaiming themselves brilliant.
"Zombieland"?? Thanks, I've already seen that four minutes of Dawn... THIRTY YEARS AGO... - tanmaker, on 10/02/2009, -1/+1Rule #1: Zombies can't run.
- MadHarvey, on 10/02/2009, -1/+1Day of the dead is worse than Land of the Dead.
Return of the living Dead is better than both, but I'm not sure why we are even talking about that film, it was never meant to be a sequel to Night of the Living Dead, more of a parody/rip-off... - Kaempffe1, on 10/03/2009, -0/+0I still say I wish HIS script had been used for the Resident Evil flick. I will never stop bitching about it, no matter how many idiots pay to see them.
I would happily buy a book from Romero. - Kaempffe1, on 10/03/2009, -1/+0Rule #2: Zombies don't know about rule #1.
