    In pretty much every binary implementation of negatives today, that's not quite true. The most significant bit is only an indication of negative (as opposed to a sign bit), and the absolute value of such a number is the result of flipping all of the bits and adding one.

    To wit, your example 11001101 would be -(00110010 + 1) = -(00110011) = -51.
