- ghidorahnotweak, on 09/04/2008, -11/+76I think I went to college in a liberal dystopia.
- OneLess, on 09/04/2008, -10/+71Forgot the part where we invite terrorists into the country who force us to get gay-married.
- Zippo, on 09/04/2008, -13/+69And by "liberals", they mean extreme-left... In reality, most "liberals" are far closer to center.
- FredFredrickson, on 09/04/2008, -2/+47In most sci-fi, the future always seems a lot more liberal than things are now.
- ErickStevenson, on 09/04/2008, -16/+60Liberals... the meaning of Liberals to these people are anyone not on their side... Plain and simple. If you are not supporting them, you sir are a liberal.
- rdldr1, on 09/04/2008, -17/+51When does Liberalism equal Socialism or Communism? Buried for inaccuracy.
- CaptainAO, on 09/04/2008, -7/+36Having a society that leans too far on either side of the political spectrum ultimately results in mass oppression. Extremism is bad, period.
- PleaseJustDie, on 09/04/2008, -2/+27***** insane?
- falstaff, on 09/04/2008, -0/+24The best example is Star Trek, but they've solved the problem of distribution of scarce resources (replicator) and, presumably, finite energy. If everybody could have almost anything they wanted with no cost (or just a one time replicator purchase?), then the whole concept of an "economy" falls apart, and the needs/wants of an individual can be filled for eternity (or close enough). The only thing left to strive for is a betterment of society where everybody works toward that common goal.
Needless to say, we've got a ways to go before that becomes a realistic scenario outside fiction. - arjie, on 09/04/2008, -3/+26Hmm, if they're talking about too much political correctness and whatever results from that, Fahrenheit 451 is a good book to quote. Just saying. It's a good book anyway.
- deadonbroadway, on 09/04/2008, -18/+41A Liberal future to me, is when everybody is more respected and free to do what they want without harming others and having equal oppurtunity to become prosperous. Call me crazy!
- doctechnical, on 09/04/2008, -3/+22And you paid for the privilege. That's a double ouchie.
- cosine5000, on 09/04/2008, -12/+31WARNING: Near the end of this 'article' the author mentions 'Atlas Shrugged' as being 'fantastic'.
If only he would have put that line at the TOP of the article I wouldn't have had to read any further. - evildemonic, on 09/04/2008, -2/+21You weren't the only one.
- jordanmerle, on 09/04/2008, -6/+24Is there something wrong with legal gun ownership?
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -1/+19Digg is where common sense and intelligence go to die.
- sherifftruman, on 09/04/2008, -12/+29Actually, I don't think even the far-left is trying to make societies like these. Only conservatives think that is what liberals want.
- Dumbledorito, on 09/04/2008, -7/+24"Liberality" is barely science fiction. It's more of a screed against a strawman idea of what "liberals" are and an attempt to turn bloviators the author admires into superheroes.
What was doubly mystifying to me was that it was created/written when "conservatives" were at their most powerful, controlling all three branches of government (as opposed to todays 2 and a half, but still...), yet the author felt somehow that this boogeyman named "liberal" would result in a post-apocalyptic word where G. Gordon Liddy had a cybernetic arm. It was also quite ironic to read about "Coulter censorship laws" at the same time people were being detained/arrested for wearing anti-Bush and anti-war t-shirts. - ErickStevenson, on 09/04/2008, -8/+25Just follow the simple Republican rule... anyone not a Repub is a Liberal... doesn't matter what the definition says...
- bradshawz, on 09/04/2008, -8/+24This guys a legitimate idiot when it comes to analyzing the thematic content of books. Consider 1984. Here we have a pseudo fascist state that energizes through fear (who are we at war with now?). We also have a dichotomy between the proles and the party-class (A blatant contradiction to the liberal agenda). The Patriot Act is more big brotherish then being politically correct. This book is a witness toward a non-liberal dystopia.
Unless they're being ironic. - Hetman, on 09/04/2008, -2/+18I have a future utopian dream. It is where people stay the hell out of my business regardless of what I do, what I believe, or how I act, as long as I am not hurting anyone. Thats it. And lower taxes and downsize the government, but that might be asking to much.
- markperia, on 09/04/2008, -0/+16wait what are we untying?
- trumpappy, on 09/04/2008, -5/+20Yes! Radical Middle-ists, Untie!
- airforceteacher, on 09/04/2008, -0/+15The difference is that in 451, Ray Bradbury was not warning us that the government would do it, but was warning us that we would do it to ourselves - that the drive to mediocrity and to avoid discomfort would do away with culture. In the book, the government did nothing but codify the existing discrimination against intelligence into law.

You've done an excellent job of reinforcing truman's point you know. You rely on petty assumptions and broad generalizations about people which you regurgitate over and over again so often that you actually believe them. I hold liberal views (technically I'm libertarian) and I have a steady full-time job that pays well and that I intend to build into a career. I have a high IQ (130 - on the same scale genius level was set at 155), and I have no intentions of going anywhere in life but up.
People like you, who keep their minds in the gutter and rely on decades old stereotypical assumptions of people they've never met or understand, are the cancer of this country. You should be ashamed. - bobbarkerbilly, on 09/04/2008, -8/+22Liberalism does not equal fascism.
- Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -8/+22Irregardless is a double negative.
- pintomp3, on 09/04/2008, -1/+15"We can have democracy in this country, or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can't have both."
Louis D. Brandeis (Supreme Court Judge) - o0joshua0o, on 09/04/2008, -2/+15The author of this article needs to look up the term "liberal".
- bosssmiley, on 09/04/2008, -21/+34Lots of name-checking, negligible analysis. Tag as "mediocre"
- WorldGroove, on 09/04/2008, -2/+15"An armed populace always creates a deterrent to government oppression"
There a famous guy who said something like this. I believe it to be true; the American military could not oppress its people. At least, it's going to be a very huge bloody mess before it's all over - and if there's even anyone left. Since alot of young people today believe the USAgovernment is seeking more & more control over people post-911, anything that brings power into the hands of the individual and makes government think twice before trying to enforce its will upon the populace - is good. - swrostmore, on 09/04/2008, -4/+17Future dystopia where liberals have won - Watchmen
Future dystopia where conservatives have won - V for Vendetta
Alan Moore is fair and balanced! - positron, on 09/04/2008, -2/+14I would argue that because you had the same opportunity as everyone else to actually become successful you shouldn't give two ***** what anybody else thinks you should do with your hard earned fortune.

But is it "giving back" when you're actually forced under the threat of imprisonment? - thedogfatherx, on 09/04/2008, -4/+16You got a problem with gun ownership? I'll stick to protecting myself in this world and not rely on everybody else all the time.
- worseforwine, on 09/04/2008, -1/+12That sounds an awful lot like something a goddamn dirty liberal would say!
- LemonHerb, on 09/04/2008, -15/+26Because people assume that given time there will be progress.

- mecharabbit, on 09/04/2008, -2/+12Why is political correctness always equated with liberalism? I consider myself a liberal but am nowhere near politically correct.
- worseforwine, on 09/04/2008, -0/+10Kif, have the boy lay out my formal shorts.
The boy, sir?

- DrDragun, on 09/04/2008, -0/+10Glab: I can think of no better place for this centre of diplomacy than here in orbit around the Neutral Planet. What are your thoughts on this momentous occasion, Your Neutralness?
Neutral President: I have no strong feelings one way or the other.
---
Zapp: I hate these filthy Neutrals, Kif. With enemies you know where they stand but with Neutrals, who knows? It sickens me.
Zapp: Fly the white flag of war.
Neutral President's Aide: Should we trust him, Your Neutralness?
Neutral President: All I know is my gut says maybe.

Neutral President's Aide: Your Neutralness, it's a beige alert.
Neutral President: If I don't survive, tell my wife, "Hello". - rdldr1, on 09/04/2008, -7/+17How about we lump the Muslim extremists with Conservatives? They share many more aspects with the conservatives than the Liberals.
- anarcurt, on 09/04/2008, -1/+10Absolutely true. My dad is a staunch Republican and nine months ago I explained how I was for Ron Paul. He called me a hippie liberal! Libertarianism is a far cry from modern Liberalism. Eventually got him to sit down and watch some of Pauls speeches on YouTube and now he's on the side of liberty.
