- Zerophnx, on 06/17/2008, -1/+56Work in the industry long enough and you see those things. Good interview, especially the last part, he really hit the nail on the head with that one.
"Well, it was a great pleasure talking to you." "I doubt that." - glxyjones, on 06/17/2008, -0/+43Classic, can you imagine someone younger than the age of 70 being so blunt?
I guess he just doesn't care what the interviewer or anyone else cares about him. I envy such a trait. - IPublius, on 06/17/2008, -3/+43What. is it with this punctuation. thing.
Once or twice it fits, this is not one of those times. Also it has gotten old pretty fast. This title would have been much better without any periods at all or only the one at the end. - c4sh, on 06/17/2008, -0/+26The idea that you can get away with saying whatever you want and being a total douche to everybody with no consequences almost makes getting old appealing.
- Surfrock66, on 06/17/2008, -1/+22"Were you chaste during those years?" "Chased by whom? "
Brilliant. - an0nymous, on 06/17/2008, -2/+23Q: "How did you feel when you heard that Buckley died this year?"
A: "I thought hell is bound to be a livelier place, as he joins forever those whom he served in life, applauding their prejudices and fanning their hatred."
He.. does have a way with words, doesn't he? - bwjacket, on 06/17/2008, -2/+22Dad?
- aaaleman, on 06/17/2008, -0/+19That was great. I laughed out loud several times. And I never laugh before 10 a.m.
- lobo2305, on 06/17/2008, -1/+19Vidal is truly a great one. He was great on Bill Maher, and he's a huge fan of Italo Calvino. Best line in the interview:
"If we look at the situation apart from you —"
"It’s my interview, so we’ve got to stay with me." - Corinne716, on 06/17/2008, -1/+19This man is my hero.
- Jibberwalk, on 06/17/2008, -3/+18Either badwithcomputer and cswalker21 are the same person, or this is the worst case of reddit/digg/reddit incest I have ever seen.
You couldn't even bounce for a better headline? - naugrim, on 06/17/2008, -1/+16"What do you think is your own best novel?"
- I don’t answer questions like that. Ever. And you ought not to ask them.
Talk about piss and vinegar. This guy probably has that 'crazy grandpa strength' commonly associated with excessive hair tussling and indian burns. - webmosher, on 06/17/2008, -0/+14The interviewer, Deborah Solomon, has been occasionally criticized for her bending of interview material to fit within the humorous "posturing" in her articles. So much so, that some subjects of her interviews have stated that she has misrepresented them in various ways.
I suspect Vidal knew where she was coming from and was happy to shut her down and not get snared in her traps. Perhaps this caught her off guard, because at the end of the interview, she's asking questions a high school student might ask: "What do you think is your own best novel?" Seriously, is that the best she can do? I was particularly amused by how he closed the whole topic of gay marriage. Pretty classy way to tell someone, "That's my business now, p*** off."
I honestly have never read anything by Gore Vidal, but I am now motivated to see what he might have to say. Wait... maybe that was the whole point of the article in the first place. Doh! - MammasMilk, on 06/17/2008, -0/+14I can only hope to be half the crank he is when I grow old.
- LingLing1337, on 06/17/2008, -4/+17You stole the very first comment from reddit, you bastard. GTFO my Digg.
- Serris, on 06/17/2008, -0/+13It's Gore Vidal..he's been like that for his entire life. The interviewer treated him like a celebrity instead of like an intellectual, and she got exactly what she should've expected from him.
- RealmDown, on 06/17/2008, -1/+14A finer definition of a critic I have not heard. Excellent.
- frankglez, on 03/26/2009, -0/+12There are tons of people like that. They express their opinion with honesty and without reservation. But anyone younger than 70 is instantly labeled as "Bitter and Angry". Society is very politically correct, and if at 30 years old i said i couldn't care less about gay marriage in California i would be tagged insensitive, not honest.
- Cattac16, on 06/17/2008, -0/+12Don't you watch Lifetime? Cranky old people have hearts of gold and pockets full of Werther's Original candy.
- dislexicllama, on 06/17/2008, -1/+12The description and title of this digg submission are the most difficult I've had to read on here.. I found myself re-reading it 3-4 times to get the proper meaning
Tuesday mornings :( - unicronband, on 06/17/2008, -1/+12He's right guys

I don't mind stories being shared across Digg and reddit, but to try and pass off witty comments that you didn't write as your own is just ***** lame. - warholsbluecat, on 06/17/2008, -1/+12"We can’t bust heads like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to tell 'em stories that don’t go anywhere—like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. 'Give me five bees for a quarter,' you’d say. "Now where were we? Oh yeah—the important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn’t have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones..."
- ace429k, on 06/17/2008, -0/+10that guy is as blunt as the back end of an ax.
- LingLing1337, on 06/17/2008, -3/+12Digg has basically become Reddit's leftovers with a few videos here and there.
- PoppaSpanky, on 06/17/2008, -1/+10lol, what a pompous rump . . . but I like that he speaks his mind and doesn't care what any of us think of him.
- Serris, on 06/17/2008, -1/+10It's about respecting another person. Maybe if you'd been raised half-decently, you'd understand the concept.
- Verfel, on 06/17/2008, -0/+9Yeah, but he's really good at it...
- thorstrongstone, on 06/17/2008, -2/+11Dr. House is the Gore Vidal of television.
- theradical, on 06/17/2008, -0/+8Are you joking? It was a terrible interview. Vidal is a genious and the interviewer is a ***** asking about Gay marriage and "what's your own best novel?" It's one step away from "if you were a tree..." ***** New York Times.
- chikara8, on 06/17/2008, -0/+8Unfortunately, Gore Vidal was a crazy old crank in his youth, too.
- MalsAU, on 06/17/2008, -0/+8Haha, as much as I liked reading the interview I'm pretty sure I would have been terrified to have been the interviewer. "Well, it was a great pleasure talking to you." "I doubt that."
I can only dream of being that cranky in my old age. - cambob76, on 06/17/2008, -0/+7Yes, another annoying habit that seems to have permeated the Internet; enough already. If you need to add emphasis, use a '!'. If you think I'm being a lame grammar nazi, think about a language where nobody gave a *****... eventually nobody would understand it. Stay in school kids.
- SolidBones, on 06/17/2008, -0/+6This person inspired me...to laugh out loud.
- Daniru, on 06/17/2008, -0/+6If the moon was made of ribs...
Really, what has happened to the New York Times? It's like they're hiring the best and brightest of Mrs. Thompson's 11th grade English Class. - sfacets, on 06/17/2008, -0/+6Oh, he's so cute when he's grumpy!
- middy, on 06/17/2008, -0/+6Wow, that made my morning.
- Serris, on 06/17/2008, -0/+6Vidal had the stones to talk about Norman Mailer stabbing his wife while he was on a late night show (Dick Cavett) with Mailer himself. This didn't start when he got old.
- Serris, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5You wouldn't happen to work for the NY Times, would you?
- rblancarte, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5The reports of his death are greatly exaggerated
- o0joshua0o, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5What are video game critics?
- inactive, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5I love this man so much.
- inactive, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5In general, Critics are sad, bitter little men who write about what they wish they could do.
Most Music critics are failed musicians, literary critics are generally failed authors, etc. - hummer13, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5He would be, but only if he wrote the lines himself.
- inactive, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5Or being cripple. Just look at Gregory House.
- filmbandit, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5the guy's a national treasure -- if you like that track down his recent interview on democracy now (excellent) or enjoy this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWODMla3IWk - pinchduck, on 06/17/2008, -2/+7What's wrong, Gore? Not enough people bowed to your superior intellect? Your ego not getting the strokes you think it deserves? The title of the article should have been "An Ass Grows Old".
- roflbrothel, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4You are an idiot.
- BoneheadFarker, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4What do you mean, "old age"? I strive to be that cranky now, and I'm not even 30 yet...
- rblancarte, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4No wonder I think he is such a bad ass
