- KaiserArny, on 07/07/2009, -0/+29My profile picture is the Eagle from the original Prussian flag later used by the East Prussian province were my father was born (now Kaliningrad, Russia). It's derived from the Teutonic Knights Eagle who conquered Prussia after the Crusades and the fall of Jerusalem.

They do if you nudge them...take that conspiracy theorists! - BMPOvojvoda, on 07/07/2009, -0/+11Seems like humans traditionally have a fetish for eagles.
- Tanktunker, on 07/07/2009, -0/+11Too hard to draw.
- bigpappapunk, on 07/07/2009, -0/+11surprisingly interesting
- JoshDelvin, on 07/07/2009, -1/+11These are sweet. Why don't we have anything like this today?
- YoWhatDaFuxUp, on 07/07/2009, -0/+9***** Hezbollah...
Cool flag though. - RudeTurnip, on 07/07/2009, -0/+8Hezbollah has a pretty badass flag with an AK-47:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thum ... - tomasmarc, on 07/07/2009, -0/+8Nation flags is one of the most interesting topics ever. For example, did you know that Finnish Presidential flag still bears swastika?

Once had a great day in the office doing nothing and going through flags in Wikipedia :) - smitty97, on 07/07/2009, -0/+8Dugg for the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch on many of the Byzantine/Russia flags
- inactive, on 07/07/2009, -1/+9I see you are practiced in worshiping things that fly. Good. Kneel before Zod!
- Junkyarddawg, on 07/07/2009, -0/+7It goes back to the Imperial Eagle, the symbol of Rome. All the flags which use the eagle are claiming ancestry of/drawing legitimacy from the Roman Empire.
- inactive, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6why is the eagle so popular in the flag department?
- steelersfan7roe, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6Blasphemy! The name is Petoria!
- zioon, on 07/07/2009, -1/+6Iranian monarchy Flag was mistaken, The correct flag sign named : Lion & Sun :

- stoperror, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4Confederate States of America?
Commence the flaming, redneck remarks, and all that jazz. - SaintDogbert, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4God hates flags
- Sogui, on 07/07/2009, -2/+6Old flags were so much cooler.
In E:TW when my Austrian Empire became a republic, my flag became the ugly 2 color flag that they use today... so I staged a royal coup just to get the old flag back.
Comparison:

http://www.metroflags.net/austrianempire.html - pushforpeace, on 07/07/2009, -1/+5They're all a little too baroque for my taste. I like the simplicity of contemporary nation flags.
- greenroom628, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4well the swastika was originally a very common symbol; meaning everything from power to good luck. that is, until the nazi's came along.
stupid nazi's...i hate those guys.

- FlashBazbo, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3"One, two, five!"
- Gravey9, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3Not a very well structured article but some interesting facts none the less. What's even more amazing is how "recent" some of the flags were, like the Iranian flag and the Spanish Flags.
- thedivinelyevil, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3The swastika is actually still used in south-asia by Hindus. And I don't mean rarely, it's common to see one, especially during religious festivities.
And did you know? Nepal is the only country with a flag that is not rectangular in shape! - jdames1980, on 07/07/2009, -1/+4Most of these flags are so similar with the two headed crest. I was hoping for more creativity.
- CeeJayDK, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3We do.
All countries have at least one flag , and most countries also have a coat of arms.
So does cities and states.
You just don't see them very often.
Flag and coat of arms from existing countries here :

Try to look up your own country - You might be surprised.
I had no idea my own country had so many. - Mpwns, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3today's flags look so boring compared to a lot of these.
- thedivinelyevil, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3An eagle represents strength, courage and all the good stuff. So the Romans and Greeks began using it centuries ago, and basically, everyone followed. A lot of countries still have an eagle on their coat of arms, including the US!
edit: according to wikipedia it was the Persians who first began using it. But it was definitely the Romans who were primarily responsible for spreading its use, what with all the conquering! - inactive, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3Damn, learned something today. I was hoping to avoid that.
- Janv1er, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3No Afghanistan?
http://www.afghan-network.net/Flags/ - Hypnotical, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3Here in Vlaanderen we still use part of the Burgundy flag:

Flag today:
http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlaanderen - pwr4, on 07/07/2009, -1/+3This article was very Western-leaning. There were many similar "countries" in 16th century Japan and 3rd century China with their own flags.
- Hraes, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2"Three, sir!"
- A5204, on 08/13/2009, -1/+3What's the deal with flags and eagles?
And airline food.
- FlashBazbo, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2Napolean III needs to call Orkin.
- thedivinelyevil, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2Eagle - the symbol of power was the rave of the day!
- sildude, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2I prefer Mozambique.
- TNicholson, on 07/07/2009, -1/+3Did anyone else see Mr. T in the title pic?
- Junkyarddawg, on 07/07/2009, -1/+3I give you the Kalmar Union & flag: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalmar_Union
Bonus: the failed designs for the Union Jack: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Union_jack_propo ... - copypastry, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2In the Tokyo Ward flags:
Third Column, third from the bottom... Starfleet? - Guitarhammer, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2Coming soon: Stars and stripes.
- mbelrose, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2Yes, they are copyrighted. Just send me your bank info and I'll arrange for the proper parties to receive their shares of the profits.
- mGARANDEUR1, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2It would be nice if the flags were clearly labeled on the page so I wouldn't have to scan the article just for the name of the country.
- Garmonbozzia, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2Came for Eddie Izzard.
Left disappointed..... - Hellahulla, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2It also appears on their medals and military insignia still. Why change it, it has nothing to do with the bastardised Nazi swastika. Changing it would be pointless.
- ChocChunkOaties, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2checkout the flag for Liberia
- Junkyarddawg, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1Hahaha yeah, poor Norway, the least likely country on earth to oppress anyone.
- kjm16, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1the Teutonic Knights were my favorite units in AOEII
