Facebook addicts spend more than a week per year on the site

telegraph.co.uk — The average person who used Facebook in each of the last 12 months has spent 70 hours 26 minutes on the site during that period, according to a spokesman from Nielsen Online, the company which conducted the research. They also calculated that the most addicted users have spent over 125 hours on the site during the last year

    I played at least 120 hours a month -- and might even have put in 100+ hours in a single week once or twice -- back when I was a hardcore MMO junkie.

    120 hours a year? That's nothing. The average American supposedly watches 4 hours of TV a day -- 1400+ hours per year.

    Chess addicts spend more than a week a year playing chess.

    But I'm willing to bet the author of that "facebook addicts" article probably spends less than a week a year researching their articles.

I'm not advocating anyone sitting behind their computer 24/7, but if it's what they like to do then leave them be. Besides, life isn't as hard as it used to be. Technology exists to make our lives easier so that we have more time to do the things we enjoy. Regardless of what that might be.

If I'm going to not be contributing directly to society today, I want to at least train for the coming zombie apocalypse so I can contribute when the chips *are* down. And as we all know, moving a mouse and clicking the left or right button is almost 100% accurate training for handling a real weapon when the uprising occurs.

As in, I've got facebook open in a tab right now but im not using it i refresh it every now and again and that it..Do they count the seconds that i spend refreshing the site or are they counting the hours that facebook is open in the tab?

  • borez, on 11/07/2009, -1/+3Well as I spend around 10 hours a day editing audio and video, say 5 days a week 45 weeks per year, and digg ( as well as a couple of other sites) are always open in the background, that puts me at around 2250 hours/year give or take.

  • noumuon, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1i came here to post this exact comment. if that's what qualifies as "facebook addict", it's a pretty low on the scale of serious digital addictions. there was a time when having no commitments, being awake for 16 hours a day meant i was in game approximately 16 hours a day.
