Btw, this has been submitted 20+ times =) - RonPauls, on 03/12/2009, -17/+116lol you can see the revisionist history in the guys remarks....
in 1860s the guy didn't mention slavery
in 1900s the guy says it was about slavery... - SoopaflySAM, on 03/12/2009, -9/+95The Simpsons episode was right! Quick, lets dig Washington's grave and look for the silver tongue!!
- DiggzDE, on 03/11/2009, -2/+77What? Does it secretly pop open and shoot lasers out to show a map to where Lincoln's gold is buried in the White House?
- yngtimmy, on 03/12/2009, -4/+71Another part of it says "Save the cheerleader, save the world"
- inactive, on 03/12/2009, -2/+59"Look out for John Wilkes"
- JGang05, on 03/12/2009, -1/+52Oh the things time will tell
- Jackson0909, on 03/12/2009, -18/+68Oh give me a break. A story is a story.
I suppose you would be perfectly fine with it coming from HuffPo? - rossisdead, on 03/12/2009, -34/+83Hey that's great, why don't you bitch about it some more.
- Xpletive, on 03/12/2009, -1/+47this, uncomfortable hunk, of metal...
/walken - cheddaro, on 03/12/2009, -0/+46Too bad they didn't include a high resolution picture of the engraving, considering they only bothered to quote about 50% of what was actually on the watch.
- goodinohio, on 03/12/2009, -3/+48Why didn't he just twitter it?
- steliza, on 03/12/2009, -5/+49or it was 40-odd years later and he couldn't quite remember what he actually wrote?
- STBAT25, on 03/12/2009, -4/+44Welcome to Digg!
- DiggzDE, on 03/11/2009, -3/+35Too bad that wasn't what it said only what the watchmaker had thought he had written when asked about it years later.
- Phatlip012, on 03/12/2009, -0/+32I thought that was Jebediah Springfield with the silver tongue and not Washington?
- dylanwolf, on 03/12/2009, -2/+34Does it say "Don't Forget 3. Oct. 11?"
- pookydirt, on 03/11/2009, -2/+34Yes! I hear it really WAS the most prolific of master craftsmen, that crazy prognosticating watchmaker!!
- ZeeZee2k, on 03/12/2009, -6/+36national treasure 3
- cornfeed, on 03/12/2009, -1/+29The only reason that Lincoln signed the Proclamation was because the North was losing the war militarily and the civilian will to fight it. General opinion was fast becoming, "To heck with them, let the Southern States go if they want."
So Lincoln needed to fan the emotional flames against slavery to impose, (rightly or wrongly - - take your pick), his Federal Government is more important than State's Rights view on the South. Otherwise, Northern men wouldn't volunteer for the charnel house of battle that the War had become. Even then Lincoln had to institute a very unpopular draft that led to rioting and the use of Federal Troops to quash. - RumpleForeskin3, on 03/12/2009, -3/+30The Freemasons are at it again! Call Nicholas Cage!
- dreadful, on 03/12/2009, -0/+26Funny how this is a story about a watch, and you fail at telling time.
- havok3114, on 03/12/2009, -3/+27While it is true that the war began as an issue with States Rights, it didn't stay that way for long. With the Emancipation Proclamation it evolved the civil war to be about slavery. I realize that the EP was simply un-enforceable when it was signed, because it did not free the slaves in the states that were fighting for the Union, only the states that were in rebellion. What it did do however was change the focus of the war. States rights was the start of the war, and slavery was a big part of that, but the war became a war to free the slaves.
- inactive, on 03/12/2009, -81/+101This story was on every news outlet. Buried for FOX.

- yourbrokenoven, on 03/12/2009, -8/+25little late on this story, yes?
- doctechnical, on 03/12/2009, -4/+21"Sic semper tyrannis!"
/too soon? - olivcarla, on 03/12/2009, -3/+20Sorry, but the one you submitted is not even the full article, it is the article about the article on Boingboing. If you had submitted the real article: http://watchismo.blogspot.com/2009/03/secret-messa ... I would gladly digg yours, because it is so much better and more detailed. Next time, try to check the article before you submit.
- lnxfi, on 03/12/2009, -3/+19"A watchmaker used tiny tools to carefully pry open the antique"
Good thing I didn't do it. I would have used the bulldozer method. I have lots to learn. - BadAsh71, on 03/12/2009, -8/+23Everybody else here likes to bitch about it.... look, look, a Power User posted the same thing and got a ton of diggs... it's broken, Digg is broken I tell you.
That's all we ever hear about here so don't slam this guy because he is right.
Jackass!!! - elephantstomp, on 03/12/2009, -2/+17Why do some diggers insist putting the source as part of the title? Is it advertising? If it is then I will start burying all stories doing this out of principle.
- Dreeon, on 03/12/2009, -23/+37Dear Fox News,
Eat all the dicks. - gold123finger, on 03/12/2009, -0/+14http://americanhistory.si.edu/news/images/inscript ...
- hydrodev, on 03/12/2009, -1/+15Jackass: Attributes things he disagrees with or doesn't like to "liberals" or "conservatives".
There are more than 2 roads here fellas. How about acting like you have a clue. - halomaker, on 03/12/2009, -0/+13am I the only one that sees "Jeff Davis" written near the middle? Why no mention of that?
- pookydirt, on 03/12/2009, -0/+13@Logic
Shhhhh!!!! Don't reveal the secrets!!! And stop giving away the secret handshake! - V-Mob, on 03/12/2009, -0/+12Secret message: "Made in China"
- inactive, on 03/12/2009, -8/+20It's true that the North used slavery as a political tool.
- DBLOCK916, on 03/12/2009, -15/+26You're another tool of the media. I can't stand people who only bash Fox, as if they're the only media outlet that reports with a biased agenda. Don't be a fool; CNN, BBC, MSNBC and Fox are one-in-the-same.
- Biscuitz, on 03/12/2009, -14/+25Buried for ignorance.
- TsuruchiBrian, on 03/12/2009, -1/+12Sort of like how the Iraq War started as a preemptive strike to prevent Saddam Hussein from using the nuclear weapons he already manufactured against us, and ended up being about bringing freedom to Iraq and not leaving it a worse place than how we found it.
- souljaboytellem, on 03/12/2009, -0/+11I agree, I was expecting it to have at least 2 deaths and a gunfight, a car chase would have been ok too, maybe a Matrix moment in there somewhere as well......seriously though, what the hell were you thinking it was going to be?
- MRintheKeys, on 03/12/2009, -6/+17It was not about slavery because the Northerners had slaves as well. The Civil War was strictly a war about economic prosperity just like pretty much every other war.
- Dreeon, on 03/12/2009, -0/+10It's from what someone wrote about Fox regarding The Watchmen movie.
Next time don't be such a *****. - kelliillek, on 03/12/2009, -1/+10"Be Sure. . . To Drink. . .Your Ovaltine."
