- HIFIsamurai, on 09/23/2009, -1/+33I just about had sensory overload last time I visited Akihabara. Probably the only place I will ever see iPods sold in gumball machines. Highly recommend it if you are in Tokyo area.
- chikuten, on 09/24/2009, -0/+20Scattered all throughout Akihabara. Seriously.
- MikawaMike, on 09/24/2009, -1/+16No trip to Akihabara is complete without partaking in the extremely pathetic/awkward/awesome local pastime, Maid Cafes.
- fightingforair, on 09/24/2009, -0/+12Not only scattered, its screaming at your face. (Loudly)
- ArchetypeRyan, on 09/24/2009, -2/+14Lame. Only 7 pictures and half of them were generic looking video game stores. They've captured none of the flavor of place - the bins of old cameras, the towering big box stores, the geeks outside Yodobashi camera playing Dragon Quest on free Wi-fi. Also, they suspiciously had zero photos of cos-players and forgot to include the 6 story adult toy and costume shop. Is Wired trying to be family friendly, or what?
Leaving that aside, Akihabara has changed but it's still a cool place. :P - archivedigger, on 09/24/2009, -1/+12Sorry, Fry's in Burbank. Akihabara in Tokyo is my favorite place in the world to to buy electronics.
- JKAL, on 09/24/2009, -1/+9Maybe Nakano is for the real "wannabe" otaku, but not for the real otaku. If you venture into the little alleys in Akiba and up the old staircases of old buildings you will find many bargains, specially for components, spare parts and replacement parts.
And a real otaku would not make a simple error as getting the direction wrong, Nakano is almost directly West of Akiba not south, and what do you mean same train line? there are 6 different train lines that have stops in and around Akiba. - bigpun, on 09/24/2009, -0/+7As a geek, I loved Akihabara when I visited Japan last month - I can't wait to go back again next year!
Side note: the guy in picture two looks like the milk drinking bass guitar playing cross dresser someone submitted a couple of days ago. Im sure someone can find a link in case anyone missed it. - Mujokan, on 09/24/2009, -0/+5And if you aren't disturbed after browsing it...
- 7000Questions, on 09/24/2009, -0/+4Akihabara actually has a ton of hidden maid cafes, usually unmarked in the top floor of some buildings. I was gonna go to one a couple years ago, but it's actually quite expensive.
- Manguskahn, on 09/24/2009, -0/+3Porn is EVERYWHERE in Japan. I have to say about 95% of the DVD/Video stores I saw had a substantially large porn section. I was partially impressed, and disturbed at the same time.
I'm just wondering what was going through the patrons' heads when they saw a 6'4" white dude walk into the porn section, then quickly do an about face and walk out. - GreenChaos, on 09/24/2009, -0/+3FTA "Launch prices of $50 to $60 can plummet to $10 a month after a game’s release."
O_O - damnshoes, on 09/24/2009, -0/+3how much do you pay for the gumball machines?
- ArchetypeRyan, on 09/24/2009, -0/+3As a digger and prospective gaijin, maybe it's best he used deferential form when talking to other people. :P
- bigpun, on 09/24/2009, -0/+3Yamanote line ftw for any tourists in Tokyo
- bigpun, on 09/24/2009, -0/+3Found it: http://digg.com/music/Manga_Japan_Bass_Boy_Video
An all I had to do was google for 'bassist milk crossdress'. Explaining that to anyone who checks my search history would be interesting. - GothAlice, on 09/24/2009, -1/+3Yet another in a long list of places I must visit regularly when I finally manage to live in Japan for a few years.
Aah! Mari-o Bros san wa sugoi desu ne! Go hyaku yen desu ka? Arigato! - pygmy, on 09/24/2009, -1/+3Anyone been to the Nintendo museum in Akihabara?
- Aeko, on 09/24/2009, -2/+4You don't write desu when you're chatting/posting on the internet. :o
- Cern001, on 09/24/2009, -0/+2Thanks for the info, I'll have to check them out next spring when I'm there visiting the in-laws. Any place that the locals will tolerate a 20 minute wait sounds promising.
- Phych, on 09/24/2009, -0/+2Here's a small peek:

- DecoyQ, on 09/24/2009, -0/+2If they are so nerdy they'd be playing duck hunt instead of super mario bros on that LCD... yeah figure that out Japan!
- rancor01, on 09/24/2009, -1/+3No.. You'll never find "the best" anything in a touristy area. The best ramen in Tokyo is in Koiwa just west of the JR station and its called Ramen Jiro. Run by two young dudes between the hours of 5 and 9pm. Closed on weekends. Theres a 20 minute line waiting to get in every night of the week.
- inactive, on 09/24/2009, -0/+2Wow what was that 7 photos? I looked at some from Gamespot yesterday, they were nice pictures. And look, they start at Akihabara as well.
http://www.gamespot.com/special_feature/tgs-2009/i ...
uh..the first picture..lol. - smacksaw, on 09/24/2009, -1/+3desudesudesudesudesudesudesudesudesudesudesu
- magus_melchior, on 09/25/2009, -0/+1Thinkgeek, Newegg, K&R: "Zoidberrrrrg..."
(Okay, they don't have nearly as much anime stuff, but half of Akiba is electronics, anyway) - intro211, on 09/25/2009, -0/+1I live 10 minutes walking from Akihabara (or Akiba as we call it here) , and i can assure you I lost the meaning of the word WTF a loong time ago... nothing surprises me anymore :(
- rancor01, on 09/24/2009, -2/+3Akiba is nothing but a tourist trap now. Real otaku go to Broadway mall in Nakano. Akiba is completely full of big box stores such as Laox, Yodobashi camera, etc. There are no deals to be had, and this is especially true for any shop on the main drag. It's become a victim of its own success.
Seriously, check out Nakano. Its on the same train line about 30 mins south, and out geeks anything in akihabara. You can buy real de-milled Ak-47s, used panties, and the latest Doraemon comics all on the same floor. - Manguskahn, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1Holy crap, I saw that bear at the train station outside of Nagasaki. Cute and insanely creepy at the same time.
- Greengoo, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1Maiden's lane. It's just off the main strip.
- smacksaw, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1Dude in slide 2 looks like he's been puking milk for his entire life. He's way more beat than the manga bass tranny.
- kontraire, on 09/24/2009, -1/+2I'll do that...thinking about putting together a media center/seedbox...
- omnithought, on 09/24/2009, -1/+2It's not so much an electronics mecca anymore as it is porn and anime. I was just there a couple of weeks ago and the good prices are for locals. The duty free section of the stores are overpriced and of limited selection. The maid girls handing out flyers for the maid cafe's are cute, but Akihabara is overrated.
- FauOz, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1Most of the stuff costs less when bought in USA
- antdude, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1I am sure someone has photograph/photo. collections to share. Please share!
- royoken, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1Ending up reading the entire set, nice work!
- KILLERB00TSMAN, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1Densha Otoko!!
- PaulOwen, on 09/24/2009, -1/+2Ahh Akihabara.
Akihabara has one of the best Ramen shops in Tokyo - called "Jangara Ramen". Located here:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q& ... - HIFIsamurai, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1it's been three years, but I think it was ¥2000, just over 20 bucks. Not each plastic ball included an iPod but it appeared to be good ratio, which I assume really is not.
- bshock, on 09/24/2009, -1/+2Akiba was okay, but I like Asakusa better. Completely different sort of place.
- tzakiel, on 09/24/2009, -1/+2Just got back from Japan, here's my impressions of Akihabara (which I wish I had spent more time exploring) Second half of post...
http://jonvandalen.com/newblog/2009/09/14/day-9-in ... - topcat5, on 09/24/2009, -1/+1Great place to go. First thing you realize is the stuff they sell in America is about 2-3 years out of date in comparison.
- Tarkaan, on 09/24/2009, -1/+1Yeah, I'm sorry, but you're full of *****. Akiba aims to please, even at the super-malls. You just need to know where you're going and ask the right questions. Check out the Capsule Hotel if you're a tourist. They can get you *anything* you want.
- shawnmrose, on 09/24/2009, -1/+0"Worst article ever!"
sarcasm - Sexercise, on 09/24/2009, -2/+1...drearily I look at the ***** selection of goods offered in NA, and I lose all faith in humanity.
Where's all of the super-mega-electronics outlets in Canada? USA? Bah. - swicken, on 09/24/2009, -4/+3At home in the kitchen! Duh!
