- MarkusX, on 12/10/2008, -0/+8You don't have to be a refugee to be caught between different cultures. Most immigrants - even voluntary ones - expereince the same problem. Some handle it better, others don't. I am talking from 1st hand experience.
- Barackalypse, on 12/12/2008, -2/+9Am I the only one that thinks if your homeland was so violent and dangerous you had to flee from it that maybe you should be picking something better to try and identify with. Third world customs, values, and behaviors are not going to serve you well in a modern civilized society, nor will that society be served by people living it in that have a stronger affinity to a failed foreign culture than to their new home.
- Digitalfuneral, on 12/12/2008, -0/+6Hells, you dont even have to be an immigrant or a refugee to lead a double life. I'm Native America and live in my home country and I still feel like I live a double life.
Being caught between two cultures can be tough times but it does offer an experience and a perspective to life that many other people dont experience. - darkhero, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3As a Somalian, this article hits home.
- CVL4317, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3Tradition sucks when you don't like it yet you got forced to adopt one.
- ElCheLikesAudi, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3I myself am a son of an immigrants I know how it feels. I feel for these people but I didn't found any group program with people I'm from (Nicaragua) and what more is that I grew up with so many different people (I use to live in Jersey City and NYC) that once I final meet my family from there. I was more uncomfortable with them than the project's! (I'm white as hell by the way and use into get so much ***** from when I live there)
Even more I found myself try to distant myself from my culture like some people said in there comment's because it is true that some culture are better than other. Some are so backward that it harmful to follow and that the sad truth.
I use have ex that was an refuge from Kosovo and she didn't want anything to do with anybody from that region. She had family over there but didn't want to deal with them cause she knew how bad it will be for her. She would say to people that she from there but that about it. Every since then I say I'm Nicaraguan but I grew up close to NYC and love it!
No nation make you into who you are but you choose that and you make your own story make just make sure it your I always say! - Tynan, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3Indeed. Culture's not just window dressing. It's the main reason that some societies fare better than others in standard of living, equality, human rights, peace, and prosperity.
Not all cultures deserve to be preserved - I'm certainly glad that the old culture of my people has been replaced with something better. - Barackalypse, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2I think I got the point perfectly well, I am criticizing the parents of these children for burdening them by forcing a cultural identity on them that has nothing of value to offer them.
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -1/+3I doubt you yourself would drop your identity, culture and heritage if your country was torn apart by war to adopt a "superior" culture. You speak as if there is some sort of competition of cultures, that some are better than others. Cultures don't fail, they just are. In the next twenty year span governments and conflicts will be in constant flux for better or for worse, but a culture will stay more or less the same.
- webhosting1, on 01/28/2009, -0/+1good story that, digged.
http://www.reacthosting.com - jackinthecity, on 01/17/2009, -0/+1It is very difficult for them in many cases. I think especially for the daughters from those countries.
http://www.ricua.com - inactive, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2I'm of mixed race and I totally agree with what you said of having a different perspective on life. Growing up with two cultures was difficult, due to the outside and family pressures to completely embrace one culture or the other. In the end I embraced both and I am happy with myself. This whole experience has made me more respectful toward those who have a different lifestyle than myself, since from first hand experience I know how difficult it was to establish my own.
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -1/+2@Barackalypse So you say you'd stay and fight, because you wish to keep your home, family and community. So we agree, you would not under any circumstances abandon your culture under duress, even war.
- Barackalypse, on 12/12/2008, -1/+2If war came to my country I would fight. Nobody is chasing me from my home, my family, my community without a fight.
As far as cultures go, some are superior, the culture in these African countries is ill, ripe with female genital mutilation, superstition, ethnic and tribal violence, and child marriage. The Western world has sought to eliminate discrimination based on gender and protect children from the abuse of forced underage marriage which deprives them of education and other opportunities. - drazen101, on 12/12/2008, -0/+0i also think you missed the point. also speaking from a firsthand experience there is a cultural divide that happens between the parents and the children because the parents were raised a certain way and lived a certain way up until the move, but the children only experienced that for so long, and then they come to america and are influenced at school and by other children, which shows them the american culture and way of thought and life. so the children may experience a struggle identifying with their parents as they get older because their opinions may differ as the parent tries to instill important things from the culture they brought over, but the child wants to fit in with the rest of the kids, so they may not appreciate it right away
- jake8689, on 12/12/2008, -1/+1i think you missed the point

- darkhero, on 12/13/2008, -1/+1No that is my part time job.
- mparker21311, on 12/12/2008, -1/+1Are you talking about the culture African Americans created? Because from what I see, it's spreading faster than AIDS and destroying every town it touches. Go ahead and dig me down for telling the truth. Science isn't politically correct.
