- Haax, on 12/11/2008, -9/+448Clicking a thumb is hardly support.
- fireashes, on 12/11/2008, -21/+220NPR, I will still support you.
- kazoomaloo, on 12/11/2008, -7/+174You know NPR is great because conservatives bitch about how biased it is and liberals bitch about how it is too conservative. Once you get both sides whining, you must be inching closer to objectivity.
- rzrshrp, on 12/11/2008, -5/+147I support that comment.

- AmyVernon, on 12/11/2008, -7/+100It really is a shame, but I've gotta say - I never got into either of those shows. Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me - all must-listen-tos. But PMI has some great shows, too, such as Marketplace...
- o0joshua0o, on 12/11/2008, -15/+83Reality has a liberal bias.
- diggduggDOOM, on 12/11/2008, -4/+70As long as they don't take away Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, RadioLab, CarTalk, This American Life, Marketplace, Fresh Air, News Hour...
Guess I better go donate. - tkeajax, on 12/11/2008, -24/+90Educated about the subjects they report = Liberal
- mooseofshadows, on 12/11/2008, -5/+67I'll be donating soon. But I'm just glad they haven't cut "This American Life." That's a powerful show.
- madpainter, on 12/11/2008, -18/+73After NPR cut the Bryant Park Project this past summer I almost gave up on them. Now I only listen to NPR on podcasts. Radiolabs which is the best show anywhere, in any media, period. Awesome. Also Plant Money if you want to understand what's going on with the economy. I used to give NPR money, and I'll probably send something directly to Radiolabs this year, but I'm still pissed off they canceled BPP.
- bdbr, on 12/11/2008, -3/+54The Federal tax "support" works out to about 25 cents per person per year. State support averages out to about $2/person. Its a shame that you missed out on that one small latte per year so America could get a little better educated.
- OzzieAlThor, on 12/11/2008, -3/+49I support that comment as well.
- kirbs2001, on 12/11/2008, -7/+51who clicks with their thumb?
- FaceCage, on 12/11/2008, -0/+43I was listening to NPR last night. They are cutting into a portion of the endowment to support current programs, around 15 million I believe. leaving the rest alone for now. Say what you will about NPR, but it is far and away the best radio programming available where I live. Not good.
- Iggins, on 12/11/2008, -1/+42From Wiki: Typically, NPR member stations raise about one-third of their budget through on-air pledge drives, one-third from corporate underwriting, and one-third from grants from state governments, university grants, and grants from the CPB itself. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting's annual budget is funded by a combination of private donations from members, foundations and corporations (54.6% of 2005 budget), State and local taxes (24.6% of 2005 budget) and Federal appropriations (19.0% of 2005 budget). So about 1/6th of NPRs funding comes from taxes of some kind.
- dissolutionman, on 12/11/2008, -3/+41I support the three above comments.
- zip000, on 12/11/2008, -2/+38That's just not true. I often hear conservative economists on Marketplace and conservative commentators on other shows.
The problem is that if you say anything that is remotely true, chances are it is also not conservative. Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying that the conservative - i.e. real fiscal old school conservative - argument isn't without merit. There are truths there and there are valid opinions there. The problem is that the "conservatives" that we see so much of now aren't true conservatives, they don't back the true conservative ideology. All they are about is intentional ignorance. They view education, skill, and achievement in just about everything is something to be distrusted.
They have made "elitist" a dirty word. There is nothing lower in their estimation than a college professor. It is disgusting. That's why they supported Bush - because he seemed like one of them even if he wasn't really - and that's why they support Palin - because maybe she really is one of them.
I know I'm going off on a rant here. Sorry. - thebiznacho, on 12/11/2008, -8/+43Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes: “I like paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.”
I couldn't agree more. - pullablank, on 12/11/2008, -4/+39Really? Can you give some examples? I only started listening about 2 years ago, and its my favorite news outlet, particularly for how unbiased it is.
- d2002, on 12/11/2008, -2/+32Radio Labs and This American Life are probably my two favorite shows.
- pintomp3, on 12/11/2008, -6/+36don't just digg, donate. let's not let all radio be dominated by the likes of clear channel and other forms of infotainment. our democracy can't stand any more dumbing-down.
- chrysrobyn, on 12/11/2008, -0/+29Endowments are basically investments. If the stock market cuts in half, then the value of all the endowments that were heavily in stocks are also cut in half. If they are real estate based, and many were, then they lost much much more.
I don't know the specifics of the Croc endowment, but it wouldn't take much imagination to guess what direction it went in last October. - bwolf180, on 12/11/2008, -3/+31/sad version of All Things Considered
- bigfatphony19, on 12/11/2008, -7/+34Wow, I have never checked NPR out, but thanks to this article I'm looking through some of their podcasts and I'm excited to listen to them.
- holzp, on 12/11/2008, -55/+80I am a American Taxpayer. I support them whether I want to or not.
- timbellomo, on 12/11/2008, -2/+26That's because partisan entertainment sells better than objective news.
- rbarkc, on 12/11/2008, -2/+26Where's the bailout plan for NPR?
- jrm125, on 12/11/2008, -4/+28Indeed. High quality, factual reporting with limited punditry is what America needs. We don't get enough of it, and channels like Fox News masquerading as journalism are partially to blame.
- icabodane, on 12/11/2008, -3/+26It makes me so happy when the republicans get bent out of shape over public supported media being too "liberal" for them when talk radio (ad supported) will flat out tell you with no apologies that they are very far right conservative. I guess Phil Valentine, Michael Delgiorno, and all of those ***** I hear on Nashville talk radio accusing Obama of being an illegal alien communist radical jihadist Islamic ANTI-CHRIST (yes, at one point, they went there) every day are unbiased and fair/balanced? I heard Phil Valentine say just last night how Obama must be a mafia hit man because he came out of Chicago where all of the mob bosses are, and if you disagree with Obama, you'll end up in concrete shoes. Hitler had a propaganda machine too. It was bad then, and it is bad now. There is nothing in the "liberal media" that is that blatant. Anything that doesn't cater to the Republican party is "liberal media". ***** off.
NPR just reports the news. - Jynx97, on 12/11/2008, -7/+30Where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average!

- WildNelson, on 12/11/2008, -3/+24And shouting louder than the other guy = Conservative
- derekmas10, on 12/11/2008, -0/+21I have an hour commute each way each day. I listen to a lot of NPR 'cause I can't stand the audio vomit known as morning DJs or mental diarrhea like Imus. True they can't pleasure all people at all times, but then again, who can?
- godinster, on 12/11/2008, -2/+22Too bad Ron Paul never was a real contender. The only reason he made news was because his fundraisers were great, there's a reason Alan Keyes made virtually no news as well - despite having the money, he also had no hope in hell of winning. The internet may have had the vocal minority screaming loud but not all means of media had his name everywhere, and rightfully so because his polling numbers never were even remotely close to the top contenders. I'm sure he was important to you, he wasn't to me in the slightest and as such I wouldn't have been interested in hearing about him.
- undeuxtroiskid, on 12/11/2008, -0/+20I love "This American Life" too but it isn't an NPR show, it's made by Chicago Public Radio and distributed by Public Radio International (PRI). PRI also distributes "The Tavis Smiley Show", "BBC World Service", and "Sounds Eclectic". NPR also distributes some shows that are not made by them, such as "The Diane Rehm Show" and "Fresh Air".
- Chairboy, on 12/11/2008, -3/+22I thought they received a massive endowment from the widow of the McDonald's founder a few years ago that was supposed to ensure their financial future indefinitely. What happened?
- sanguinekane, on 12/11/2008, -1/+20@gobbleplex
NPR is not funded by the dept of homeland security. They're funded by the same root source as the DHS, that is you and me through our taxes, but the DHS does not write the checks for the staff of NPR. That would be like saying the dep't of education funds the green berets. - pullablank, on 12/11/2008, -2/+21My local station has been BEGGING for donations the past few weeks, makes sense now.
- spectecjr, on 12/11/2008, -0/+19Dares to be a moron? Usually people are morons because they're not intelligent enough to be anything else.
- flossdaily, on 12/11/2008, -1/+19What's your problem with Elite?: Smart? Educated? Oh my God, what terrible things to be!
And your problem with the Eastern US? Sorry, are the original 13 colonies not American enough for you? I guess you don't live in the "real" United States unless your town only has one traffic light, and news of the new "Star Wars: Episode I" hasn't reached you yet? - benburned, on 12/11/2008, -3/+21I support the comments which support other comments
- algaeturd, on 12/11/2008, -10/+28Oh yeah? Welcome to 2008. No one is immune. I thought we'd established that by now. Doesn't matter how cool what you're doing is, the business side is going to be very, very affected. I feel sorry for people who are shocked by this...are you living under a rock?
If you think it's bad now, just wait. - nesagwa, on 12/11/2008, -1/+18Radio LAB.
***** A. - zip000, on 12/11/2008, -1/+18I think I've got to stop reading the Digg comments. Too many of them are just to0 irritating and irrational.
I don't have a problem with people stating political beliefs that are different from mine; I enjoy a good argument. But way too often now all I hear here is ridiculous rightwing nutjobs prattling on about nothing with their thoughts and views based on nothing other than Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.
I would go on and vent more, but the damned digg comment box is jumping all over the place. - enki25, on 12/11/2008, -3/+20Yet more evidence that the only people who dislike NPR are those who haven't had the benefit of an education.
- inactive, on 12/11/2008, -9/+25You've still got Pacifica Radio. It's at 89.3 FM WPFW here in Washington DC. DemocracyNow at 8AM.
- thebiznacho, on 12/11/2008, -1/+17You won't regret it. In fact, once you start getting your news from All Things Considered and Weekend Edition you'll see what a joke mainstream media is.
