'No. Your balance sheets' - Daily Show Reporter
*Laughs, and nervously touches nose* - Editor of New York Times
That was one of the best slaps in the face I've seen in quite some time. - irfanmp, on 06/11/2009, -1/+32Canadian mirror: http://watch.thecomedynetwork.ca/the-daily-show-wi ...
- iticu, on 06/12/2009, -2/+31Why do people accept interviews with the Daily Show?
- Georgy, on 06/12/2009, -2/+28The New York Times is a great newspaper, unbiased and a great source for news.
Jon Stewart makes a joke about them, and we're making fun of NYT's integrity?
From the video itself, the people from NYT and other newspapers are the ones traveling to war zones and third world countries doing hours and hours of tireless work. - lichnor, on 06/12/2009, -0/+21Newspapers can exist without blogs.
Can blogs exist without newspapers? - tgc1, on 06/12/2009, -0/+20That was painful to watch. I felt the shockwave from it all the way up here in Canada! Jeeez that was bad. I could feel that poor mans heart break into a billion little pieces right after hearing that.
Ouch! - Yhorian, on 06/12/2009, -0/+17His reply was better. It was the money shot no one saw coming :)
- inactive, on 06/11/2009, -10/+26"The New York Times has exemplified print journalism's virtue and integrity,..."
... What? - untouchableLENS, on 06/12/2009, -3/+17There was really no point to this, other than Jason Jones being a complete ***** to the people that took the time and effort to show him around.
This is AFTER the fact that they also were a source of much of the research for the material that they use, along with all the other print newspapers (which were indirectly slapped as well) and the TV news shows that pick the fruits of the print newspapers' laborious investigations. - LimeParrot, on 06/12/2009, -0/+13They're subtle when trying to get an interview. They don't say 'we're from the Daily Show on the Comedy Channel"... they do it way more subtle and people buy into it!
- JaseFace, on 06/12/2009, -0/+12The thing is, as much as I sometimes hate "traditional" media...99% of blogs and such get their info FROM those traditional media sources. TV networks, newspapers and magazines are still the ones that actually send the reporters to places. Frankly, I'm a bit worried for what journalism will become, not because newspapers will probably be gone in a decade or so, but because I don't see who else is going to be sending people to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Burma, etc, to see what's really going on there. Further, while the Times definitely has biased and pretty much worthless political reporting, their international news reporting is among the best out there.
- nkassi, on 06/12/2009, -0/+11that's why I think they won't go away. They offer a service that other don't, aka, reasearch and the 24 hr delay gives them the chance to actually think before reporting. I mean, how much information do you really get from a 10 seconds segment on CNN or a 5 liner on reuters compared to articles in the times. I hate to say it, but they will end up having to charge for that service. Is it that bad that you'd have to pay extra for better research?
- tgc1, on 06/12/2009, -6/+16That last part of the segment where that guy goes and ***** all over the NYT was painful and frankly, digusting to watch. I mean the gall was unbelievable. I mean I know it's all fun and games, but even that last joke about the balance sheet was just incredibly bad taste. It was slightly humorous, albeit even still painful, to watch that one guy try and muster a piece of news that happened on the current day.
Jesus that was the worst kick-em-while-they're-down piece i've seen, since... well... ever. My heart goes out to the NYT. Shame man. 158 years, and at the seeming end of it, they get kicked in the balls by some smartass news reporter from a comedy show. For shame man. For shame. *cries*
Just horrible. It's like kicking an old person, who's paid their dues, in the nuts and laughing. It's just not funny. - kazamx, on 06/12/2009, -0/+7The editor made one really good comment. While 'internet news' is fast, cheap and easy to access they really don't create very much.
Iraq was a perfect example. If for example all the 'real' news organisations didn't go over there to report then what would the 'internet' news agencies use for their news? He was right when he said getting reporters out into the field is expensive and dangerous. Are the huffington post or Drudge going to do that sort of thing? - sfcaptainrob, on 06/12/2009, -1/+7Yeah, he's just a big poo poo head! Big meanie! Leave those Times reporters alone!
/sarcasm - jj101, on 06/12/2009, -0/+6I don't think that's entirely fair. Surely the point was to ridicule companies that just sit back and watch the world change around them rather than driving the world forward. In this case the NYT has not only failed to innovate but failed to even react to the innovation of others.
As far as american press goes I'm a tribune man personally but I think all these print papaers need to wake up and stake a proper claim in todays media environement. Theres a lot to be said for intelligent, well researched content and they have the prestigious branding built up over years but their business models suck currently. If ridiculing them provokes change then the Daily Show video was beneficial. Aside from that it was hysterical. - ssquared22, on 06/11/2009, -3/+7Yeah, I second your exclamation there.
- sonnybobiche, on 06/12/2009, -6/+10Yeah, this wasn't funny, just mean-spirited. And this is coming from someone who hates the NYT.
- tgc1, on 06/12/2009, -0/+3Hey pal screw you. They've been providing news for over 100 friggin' years. What have you done?
- Zoshchenko, on 06/12/2009, -1/+4There was no reason to do this bit. Newspapers have nothing to be ashamed of and the smug, mocking tone of this "report" is totally unwarranted. I dare say The New York Times, even if it is severely in the red, is far more relevant than The Daily Show will ever be.
- physixx, on 06/12/2009, -1/+3Every time there is a segment bashing traditional media, people get all defensive saying that blogs can't exist without newspapers and what an awful world it would be if we got all our news from amateur blogs.
What these people fail to realize is that blogs are (in most cases) not news. They are (in most cases) a result of everyone's need to comment on what's happening. It's silly to compare blogs and professional journalism because with exception of a very few blogs, they are all amateurish and do not cover major events from a somewhat unbiased perspective. There will always be a need for this.
NYT and every other newspaper in the world are having problems because people are less willing to pay for news, especially when it's slightly out of date, printed on cumbersome paper and consuming natural resources. Digital news on the other hand means no cutting down the forest, running huge printing presses or physical mass distribution.
It's the business model that's wrong, not the news business itself.
It should however be noted that certain events are simply too small or niched for it to valuable for an (inter)national news agency to cover. Here's where blogs come in to the picture - local amateurs capturing the event without financial motives. The same for professional photographers; certain events are not important enough to send a pro, yet more and more niche events are covered by amateurs and uploaded to Flickr. This allows for much more and wider coverage of all kinds of events, and should be celebrated. - OneFreespirit, on 06/12/2009, -0/+2What? When did I bitch about WalMart? Are you high?
- Krumpenstein, on 06/12/2009, -0/+2I thought that was a little screwed up. It's not like the New York Times is some evil organization. They employ a lot of people and if their business suffers people lose their jobs. The correspondents on the Daily Show kind of suck now. I hardly watch since Carrell and Colbert left.
- ArvinJA, on 06/12/2009, -0/+2dugg for "Depends on your perspective"!
- hackiavelli, on 06/12/2009, -0/+2You can see Jason Jones trying to figure out what the hell to say when the setup for a Woodward and Bernstein joke didn't go where he expected it to.
- sonnybobiche, on 06/12/2009, -1/+3Says the person who hates WalMart for taking out all the overpriced small businesses.
- adiggityam, on 06/12/2009, -0/+2Yeah...and all those reporters that spent months or years over-seas away from their homes, served prison time, and risked their lives or died to bring you skilled, caring reports on ***** that matters.
- jftitan, on 06/12/2009, -0/+2All he will he had left in him to continue the interview left the moment that answer was given.
the broken esteem and smile was just priceless. - gospe1337, on 06/12/2009, -0/+2I don't really think the brunt of the joke was their cooperate model.
- Van3ck, on 06/12/2009, -0/+2Yeah... lots of wasted paper.
- shasty55, on 06/12/2009, -0/+2Friendly Fire!
- Jaablaze, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1Hysterical? Funny...but not hysterical.
- cannonball, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1Just the idea that they could possibly be crying right now and asking themselves, "Why was he so mean to me?" makes it that much funnier.
- dsmx, on 06/12/2009, -3/+4They don't, they say were from a cable news show then if they ask which one then they say the daily show.
But in this case it looks like the new york times new what they were getting into. - xxNIRVANAxx, on 06/12/2009, -1/+2turn off adblock.
- dafragsta, on 06/15/2009, -0/+1Yep... just like that ***** in the party who always follows up every insulting comment with "nah man, I'm just kidding. Why do you always gotta be so serious?" I still think the Daily Show is funny, but this combined with the way Jon Stewart interviewed Katie Couric and made fun of her lack of an audience, was rather douchey. They should be careful about going further in this direction. It's already causing the pedestal that the Daily Show rests upon to crack a bit.
- Carlix, on 06/12/2009, -2/+3Yes
- antdude, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1$$$! Fame!
- adiggityam, on 06/12/2009, -2/+3I wouldn't call that 'mocking' as much as 'mourning.'
- gospe1337, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1There's something lost when news becomes just RSS feeds.
- gospe1337, on 06/12/2009, -1/+2I concur.
- adiggityam, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1He walked right into that one, didn't he?
- gospe1337, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1Why research? Man, I read on twitter and a blog about something! Speculation IS the news. Now, let's go to the magic wall.
- dafragsta, on 06/15/2009, -0/+1John Oliver, Wyatt Cinak(sp) and Samantha Bee are still great. Jason Jones isn't that funny. I don't know why he's the one who went to Iran. They've had a pretty good flow of talent.
- Van3ck, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1Because they are desperate and know that a metric ton of people, mostly young ones, watch the daily show. I think most people know that might get poked fun at by them, but they want the exposure and think deep down that they might be able to outwit the daily show or come out on top... which makes it even funnier to watch them get slapped into place.
- Miknarf, on 06/12/2009, -2/+3when did the daily show ever say that it wanted to be taken seriously?
- jmones, on 06/12/2009, -1/+1Newspapers aren't going anywhere. Why anyone without a vested interest would gloat over their "demise" is mind-boggling.
- sonnybobiche, on 06/12/2009, -1/+1Well, drudge is a news aggregator, so he doesn't really merit criticism. He literally just links to other publications without any commentary. HuffPo, however, does come off as a newsgathering organization, but really they just riff on the work of others.
- OneFreespirit, on 06/12/2009, -3/+3Get a life.
And about people losing their jobs- it's called evolve or die. -
