- crossmr, on 11/05/2009, -0/+14These are common in Asia. In Korea they're called "one rooms" (but many different places can get this name) or goshiwons. Goshi is a specific kind of test that civil servants take and many people often go to these places for a few months to live and study for the test or other tests like at university.
I lived in one for a year when I first got here. Not as bad as you think. Mine had a shower, but for the first couple months I stayed in one without. Its basically a Twin sized bed, a desk, a small closet for clothes and very minimal floor space, but unless you jam pack them with crap, they're fairly comfortable. You need to have the right mindset to stay in one. I lived in a luxury one though that included air conditioning in the summar, a full shared kitchen (with a lot of free food), free internet, free cable (small 13 inch TV in the room), keypad entry to the place with security cameras, and free laundry. There are some that are real ***** compared to that. I can't remember the exact size of the room, but not including the shower (which was actually a decent size) I think it was around 7 or 8 feet by 4 or 5 feet.
It had a ceiling as well. - gnomeh, on 11/05/2009, -1/+12Fry: You think this fruit tree's gonna get enough light?
Bender: There's a window in the closet.
Fry: This is huge! Bender, why don't I just live in here?
Bender: In a closet? (sigh) Humans...
any actual pictures of the situation though? - majortom1981, on 11/05/2009, -0/+10That is a horrible fire waiting to happen. I can see the headlines now. 100 people killed in building fire.
- edgarreyes, on 11/05/2009, -8/+18no pics. FAIL.
- densetsu23, on 11/05/2009, -0/+8Damnit, second to digg you down.
- Mujokan, on 11/05/2009, -1/+6Not often the Village Voice makes it to the front page.
I think I'd pay $100 a month to live in the Bowery...such is life. That whole area has been totally gentrified in the last few years. If you are going to take up their cause, you have to argue for subsidized accommodation downtown.
"Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown." That quote comes to mind sometimes when people complain about Diggers and their quirks. - AdeleMor, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5Confused. I see pictures.
- AdeleMor, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4There's another one: http://www.villagevoice.com/photoGallery/index/?se ...

I can't believe it is so clean. These picture are from similar house in the 1990s - TrevorBelmont, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3I assume some people are burying this comment because they think that the artist's rendition at the top of the page represents the actual living conditions of the cubicle homes.
I too was pissed at the lack of photos. - TrevorBelmont, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3So you're saying that all I have to do to find pictures of an anonymous naked person on the internet is click through some 300 links until I stumble upon it?
I NEVER DREAMED IT COULD BE SO SIMPLE! - ZeNiTH456, on 11/05/2009, -1/+3There's 1 real picture in the article: http://www.villagevoice.com/photoGallery/index/?se ...
- L0NER, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2zomg $100 a month in Manhattan!
- guytoronto, on 11/05/2009, -1/+3Obviously the author has never heard the phrase "A picture is worth a thousand words".

- fantasyflamz, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Hey, for a temporary living situation, $100 in NY isn't bad and it's not like it's that much bigger than a tent. If I had an internship or temp job in NY I would totally be for it and save so much money!
- publiclurker, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1I imagine it's a lot like our office the month before a product release.
- IxWin, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1The ones who had a chance to live in a better place are idiots, the point of this article is to what, they live in ***** quarters so be it.
- crossmr, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Similar in size perhaps to a private dorm room intended for a single occupant, but different in concept. There were quite a few university students staying there, but I don't think the dorms usually have full kitchens with free food and free laundry facilities. I don't know how many dorms have cable with TVs in each rooms. They're better equipped. I think good quality ones could help out north america a lot. Here they're used by all kinds of people, students, people who work in the city during the week and go home on the weekends, couples down and out (There was a middle aged couple who was staying there for a month or two before I left). I know in Calgary, where I lived, there was always complaints of people being unable to find anywhere to live around september. I remember one year a lot of students had to sleep in the library of the university for awhile. The lower price of these might make it an attractive option for students, immigrants accustomed to it, or heck, even a single homeless person who could scrape together $200-$300 a month to pay for a quality place. There are a lot of working homeless in Calgary and I'm sure other cities.
- webdesignsbyapw, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Hey, only $100 a month. Not bad. Better then camping lol.
- edgarreyes, on 11/05/2009, -2/+2I was expecting more of a photo-documentary. I really wanted to see what their everyday situation is.
- IxWin, on 11/05/2009, -3/+2What I think about this is, there sometimes is no choice be it that your locked
away in poverty and really can't do anything about your situation, or you just
don't want to ***** do anything about and keep on living
the same ***** way you are living. I think some of the people living in that place
just don't want to do anything about itand find a damn better place to live. I know
I read the article and the part where they got moved to a better place and filed a
suit to come back, that's what I mean, loss of words. - ran310, on 11/05/2009, -22/+1yay ... first to comment
